Chronic non-communicable diseases have modifiable risk factors, with dietary habits being a key component. A diet abundant in antioxidant-rich foods is inversely correlated with the onset and progression of these diseases. This study aimed to estimate the total antioxidant capacity (TAC) of meals suggested in the Dietary Guidelines for the Brazilian population (DGBP) (2014), as well as identify the main contributing foods. The research was quantitative and descriptive, based on the analysis of secondary data from photographic records of the suggested meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) in the DGBP. The foods, their preparation methods, and portion sizes were identified. The TAC of the foods was primarily estimated according to Carlsen et al. (2010), through the Ferric-Reducing Ability of Plasma (FRAP) assay. Subsequently, the TAC of the meals, the percentage contribution of each food item, and the TAC adjusted to 250 kcal were estimated. The average TAC found was 3.01 ± 1.35 mmol in breakfast suggestions, 1.93 ± 0.84 mmol in lunch suggestions, and 2.49 ± 3.34 mmol in dinner suggestions, with no significant differences when comparing the TAC results among the three meals (p=0.608). However, coffee was identified as the main contributor in breakfast suggestions, while beans stood out as the main contributor in lunch and dinner suggestions. Therefore, the foods that most prominently contributed to the TAC of the meals suggested by DGBP were those that, in addition to being part of the national food culture, are classified as in natura or minimally processed, highlighting their importance in providing bioactive compounds with health benefits. © 2025, The Authors. Grape processing generates residues rich in bioactive compounds with potential application in the meat ***,these substances are unstable and needs to be treated to allow their action during the processing and storage of meat *** this sense,a phenolic-rich extract from grape pomace was microencapsulated and evaluated for its potential to inhibit the oxidative process in raw and precooked beef burgers during cold *** hamburger formulations containing lyophilized extract(LEB),microencapsulated extract(MEB)and synthetic antioxidant sodium erythorbate(SEB)were prepared,pre-cooked,and evaluated for lipid and protein *** microencapsulation,with 95.0%efficiency,provided a material with a crystalline structure,rich in phenolics and with high antioxidant potential,showing 377.4±0.01,1768.1±0.07 and 1185.0±0.20μmol TEAC.100 g^(−1) for DPPH,ABTS and FRAP,*** values of malonaldehyde were found in LEB and MEB(2.9±0.3 and 1.4±0.5 mg ***^(−1),respectively)at the end of storage,with emphasis on for the hamburgers that received the microencapsulated *** behavior was observed for the analysis of carbonyl compounds,with values of 11.1±1.1,8.7±1.4 and 6.8±1.0 nM ***^(−1) in SEB,LEB and MEB,***,the freeze-dried and microencapsulated grape extracts showed superior results when compared to the synthetic antioxidant,increasing the oxidative stability of hamburgers,and avoiding significant color changes during the cold *** results indicate the high potential of the microencapsulated material to be used as a natural antioxidant in the meat industry.

Two species of cusk eels, Neobythites australiensis Nielsen, 2002 and Neobythites japonicus Uiblein et Nielsen, 2023 were collected from southwestern and northeastern Taiwan, respectively. They represent the first record of both species from Taiwan. The former specimen represents the first record from the Northern Hemisphere, and the latter specimen represents the second record of N. japonicus. As a result, eight species of Neobythites are recognized in Taiwan. We provide a detailed description of the two specimens, comparison with other available specimens, discussion of intraspecific variations, and a dichotomous key to species of Neobythites in Taiwan. © 2023, Pensoft Publishers. What are the Levels of Polyphenols in Brazilian Meals? An Estimate Based on the Degree of Food Processing (Nova Classification)

Considering the importance of polyphenol intake in reducing the risk of non-communicable chronic diseases, it is essential to encourage populations around the world, especially in Brazil, to consume foods that increase the presence of these compounds in their diet. This study aimed to identify the foods with the highest total polyphenol content and classes consumed by the Brazilian population, as well as their degree of processing. The study was conducted using secondary data collected from the 2017-2018 Household Budget Survey, which included the actual per capita food consumption of the Brazilian population and the usual portion size of foods. The investigation focused on 41 food items with the highest consumption frequency. Estimates of the total polyphenol (TP) content and classes in the foods were obtained from the Phenol-Explorer database, and the degree of food processing was classified according to the NOVA classification. Based on the ranking of the main foods consumed by Brazilians with the highest total polyphenol (TP) content, coffee (169.527 mg) and beans (38.422 mg) stood out for the average per capita consumption, while corn and its preparations (187.250 mg) and oranges (72.683 mg) stood out when analyzing the portion consumed in a single occasion. Regarding the polyphenol classes, the foods with the highest amounts consumed by Brazilians predominantly contained phenolic acids. Concerning the degree of processing, based on the NOVA classification, 76% of the foods with the highest polyphenol levels belonged to the fresh and minimally processed food category, while 15% corresponded to ultra-processed foods. It is essential to encourage the consumption of traditional foods in the Brazilian diet, as these are important sources of polyphenols. It is worth emphasizing the relevance of in natura and minimally processed foods as the basis of the Brazilian diet, mainly concerning the total polyphenol contents. © 2024, The Authors. A dip-coating process is proposed for preparation of TiO2 thin films from a segregated fluid system. To study its effects, by changing the height of the floating, less dense phase, it was possible to modify the main draining mechanism, which has decreased agglomerate size during gelification process. By reducing the amount of volume adhered to the emerging substrate it was possible to shift the draining regime mechanism towards the capillary regime, a change mostly observed before only in slower emerging deposition rates. It was also found that further reduction in adhered volume decreased the size of agglomerates during deposition, which affected transparency and electrical conductivity of prepared films. A further increase in floating phase height was shown to lower roughness in film surface. This has lead to a better coupled interface in TiO2/SnO2 heterostructure, as seen by type II hererojunction behavior, when TiO2 films, deposited on top of a SnO2 films, are prepared with solutions with 0.6 cm of floating phase height. © 2023, The Authors. 13-Acetoxysarcocrassolide (13-AC) is a marine cembranoid derived from the aquaculture soft coral of Lobophytum crassum. The cytotoxic effect of 13-AC against leukemia cells was previously reported but its mechanism of action is still unexplored. In the current study, we showed that 13-AC induced apoptosis of human acute lymphoblastic leukemia Molt4 cells, as evidenced by the cleavage of PARP and caspases, phosphatidylserine externalization, as well as the disruption of mitochondrial membrane potential. The use of N-acetylcysteine (NAC), a reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenger, attenuated the cytotoxic effect induced by 13-AC. Molecular docking and thermal shift assay indicated that the cytotoxic mechanism of action of 13-AC involved the inhibition of heat shock protein 90 (Hsp 90) activity by eliciting the level of Hsp 70 and topoisomerase IIα in Molt4 cells. 13-AC also exhibited potent antitumor activity by reducing the tumor volume (48.3%) and weight (72.5%) in the in vivo Molt4 xenograft mice model. Our findings suggested that the marine cembranoid, 13-AC, acted as a dual inhibitor of Hsp 90 and topoisomerase IIα, exerting more potent apoptotic activity via the enhancement of ROS generation. © 2023 The Authors. The marine atmospheric surface layer (MASL) is a dynamic environment with variations in both oceanic and atmospheric variables that significantly alter near surface refractivity gradients resulting in anomalous radio frequency (RF) propagation. As a result of this anomalous RF propagation, the range of ship-mounted electromagnetic sensors could significantly vary from expected values leading to detection errors or unexpected performance. Obtaining critical near surface atmospheric measurements is particularly challenging due to waves and sea spray. In the absence of available atmospheric measurements, the Navy uses mesoscale numerical weather prediction (NWP) systems to estimate near surface atmospheric gradients in this environment. an important tool the Navy uses. The primary NWP system used by the Navy is the Coupled Ocean Atmosphere Mesoscale Prediction System (COAMPS® 1 ) which is commonly blended with the Navy Atmospheric Vertical Surface Layer Model (NAVSLaM) to obtain finer resolution near the surface, allowing for improved resolution of features such as evaporative ducts, which can be challenging for COAMPS to resolve on its own. These NWP predictions are fed into RF propagation simulations such as the Variable Terrain Radio Parabolic Equation computer model (VTRPE), the Advanced Propagation Model (APM), and the Tropospheric Electromagnetic Parabolic Equation Routine (TEMPER) to obtain estimates of the refractive environment.

Biogas generated from urban solid waste degradation in landfills is composed of various types of gases, some of them are very toxic and harmful to the health of both humans and animals, and contribute directly to global warming as well. In this way, the monitoring of biogas concentration in landfills and their surroundings is very important because this can assess the air contamination around landfills, as well as to propose means to minimize it. In this work, an electronic nose for gas identification and measurement of gases present in landfill biogas using an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) is introduced. The ANN training data have been collected by the developed electronic nose, which consisted on a set of low-cost gas sensors and on a signal acquisition system controlled by the LabViewsoftware. After the ANN training, a neural architecture has been obtained and implemented in a microcontrolled digital system to measure different gas concentrations, mainly, methane. The main results of the proposed ANN-based Electronic Nose show that it was possible to measure the gases concentrations, with RMSE less than 1%, for the most of target gases, confirming the accuracy of the developed system.
