This paper proposes two three-phase five-level power conversion systems. They can be employed in a wind energy converter system (WECS) application as the machine side rectifier, connected to the permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) by an open-end winding (OEW) arrangement. Compared to the conventional topology, proposed ones lack the use of six clamping diodes in their structures. Even though, they also achieve the same power quality as the conventional one. Besides, proposed configurations may have fewer semiconductor devices in the current path, providing slightly lower power losses. Furthermore, the control system used ensures the synchronization between voltage and current, providing a high power factor operation. The converter equations, pulse-width modulation technique, and control strategy are detailed. Simulation and experimental results are provided in order to confirm their performance and feasibility.

With the increasing energy demands and environmental impacts from conventional energy sources, especially fossil fuels, renewable energy sources are increasingly popular. Among which, photovoltaic (PV) energy generation systems stands out due to their ease of installation, maintenance and low acquisition cost. Single-phase PV systems connected to the grid are commonly used in small and medium-sized residential and commercial installations. This paper proposes a single-phase five-level inverter for grid-connected PV systems. A PWM technique is applied to balance the voltages across the dc-link capacitors. Moreover, the technique has a suitable performance in terms of conducting and switching losses. The results shows the effectiveness of the technique for injecting suitable low distorted currents into the grid. Moreover, the system operates correctly to balance the voltages across the dc-link capacitors and under abrupt changes of the available power from the PV panels.

This paper presents a three-phase integrated PFC AC-AC resonant inverter with boost effect for Induction Heating (IH) Application. This converter is composed by three independent half-bridge boost rectifier and class D resonant inverters with non-smoothed DC link that achieve high power factor operation. The magnetic coupling of the three coils was measured for characterizing the resonant behavior of the arrangement. Experimental results validate the modes of operation with ZVS and the converter performance in the entire power input range (PF and THD).

In this paper, dual Vienna rectifiers are proposed for Wind Energy Conversion System (WECS) applications with Open-End Winding (OEW) Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator (PMSG). Due to the reduced number of controlled switches, the proposed topologies have reduced costs and high reliability. Besides, they provide a better power quality using the same number of controlled switches than conventional structures presented in the literature, making them very attractive options for industry applications. The system model, space vector modulation, and control strategy are given. Simulation results are provided in order to validate their performance and feasibility.

This paper presents a single-phase four-leg ac-dc-ac converter, with one leg shared by the grid side and the load side. The proposed topology can generate input and output voltages with seven levels, presenting reduced harmonic distortion, in addition to using reduced voltage switches. The space-vector pulsewidth modulation strategy (SV-PWM), the control technique, the system model, and a comparison with a three-leg topology will be presented. As for performance comparison parameters, harmonic distortion in currents and voltages, the average switching frequency, and semiconductor losses will be used. The topology was simulated and assembled in the laboratory to obtain experimental results.
