Aluminium smelting processes are typically complex and multidisciplinary, hard to be modeled and controlled. Recent advances in technology, such as IIoT and the Industrie 4.0 paradigm, have helped this industry to overcome some of these challenges by providing rich information, however good hardware capable of processing a great amount of data are often available on the cloud, whilst most of industries’ plant floor have limited hardware and Internet connectivity. In this sense technologies like in-memory and parallel computing offer an increased performance for processing huge amounts of data, thereby helping in process modeling and subsequent early detection of irregularities. Plant floor systems would be provided with the result of such processing from the cloud in order to ensure good production. This report show the results of this approach in the modelling of bath chemistry process variables, whereby we simulate some situations to check how accurate the forecasts are in the n-step ahead predictions. © 2018 Universitatsverlag Potsdam. Continuous monitoring of vital signals provides relevant information about a patient health status, which is essential in situations of risk. There is a need for practical and efficient systems to obtain these parameters and the RFID technology is presented here as a solution. In this work, a passive RFID tag is developed for respiratory rate monitoring. The RFID tag is a wireless solution for the subject and provides comfort due to its flexibility. Simulations and measurements were performed. To carry out the simulations, it was necessary to characterize the dielectric materials. The principle of operation of the technology in this application is based on the variations of the Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) caused by the respiratory movements. As a result of the measurements performed with the tag placed on the abdomen of a person, during which forced inhalations and slow expirations were made, these variations of the RSSI could be noticed and, based on the respiratory cycles detected, it was possible to estimate the respiratory rate. © 2018 IEEE.

Since 2015, the photovoltaic solar energy has had a significant increase of its installed power in Brazil, which has great potential for the generation of electrical energy with the use of photovoltaic systems due to its high irradiation index. However, a problem for the generation of electric energy by the means of photovoltaic systems is the fact that the shadow existence impacts directly the generation, as a result of the reduction of the incident irradiance in the panels. The factors which can cause shadow effect are the external solid bodies and cloudiness, which can have its effect on photovoltaic systems increased by the cloud position in relation to the sun. Thus, this article is a study about the cloudiness influence in a photovoltaic system connected to grid, denominated Green Office of the UTFPR. For that, clearness index analyses (Kt), the daily energy generation and the productivity (YIELD) have been analyzed for some different cloud conditions: clear skies, few clouds, high cloudiness, and considerable rainfall. The results showed the direct relation of the clearness index with the productivity and the electric generation of the panel, whose values were higher in the higher Kt cases. © European Association for the Development of Renewable Energy, Environment and Power Quality (EA4EPQ). With the growing diffusion of the Internet of Things concept and the advances in low-power electronics, the RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology has gained attention in various fields, from entertainment to medicine, for example. Its sensing and signal processing capability allows us to highlight this technology as one of the main solutions in reducing cost and complexity in such applications. This work presents the design and test of a flexible RFID tag operating in the American UHF frequency of 915 MHz, for human body motion detection. Through the analysis of the Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) variation with time and its Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) it was possible to ensure the tag's applicability. © 2018 IEEE.

This paper discusses a modified Direct Torque Control (DTC) method in order to reduce phase current harmonic distortion in a nine-phase asymmetrical induction motor drive system. Since the classical DTC is a direct adaptation from the three-phase case, it does not take into account the presence of the non-producing torque current components obtained from the Space Vector Decomposition (SVD) technique. Thus, in classical DTC these non-producing torque components assume high amplitudes, causing distortion in phase currents. In this way, it is shown that modified DTC minimizes the undesired components, reducing significantly the distortion in phase currents while maintaining the fast dynamic response of classical DTC.

This paper presents the small-signal modeling and analysis of an isolated bidirectional DC-DC converter. The converter is implement based on two Full-Bridge converters. The system is designed to act as a charge/discharge controller for battery banks. The model for each mode of operation is developed using the average state-space model approach. To verify the models, simulations are performed using PSIM software in addition to experimental results obtained from a 200 W prototype that connects a 60 V battery bank to a 230 V DC link. © 2018 IEEE.

In this paper, a wearable sensor for ultra-low power networks that interact with a smart home system is proposed. The device is capable to detect falls which can aid the monitoring of elderly peoples to enhance safety. Falls may lead to injuries that could be fatal or mean extra medical expenses. In this study, the development of a wearable sensor for ultra-low power networks capable to interact with a smart home system is proposed. The physiological monitoring is obtained through a 3-axis accelerometer and gyroscope, which is attached to the user's chest, performing real-time detection of falls based on threshold algorithm. The wearable sensor is an EnOcean node that includes a wireless connection with a smart home system and automatically sends alarm telegrams in case of falls. © 2016

In this paper, we present the modeling for a rapid characterization of integrated spiral inductors. Closed-form has been used to estimate the parameters of the equivalent circuit, which are calculated as a function of the parameters of the inductor physical design. The double-$\pi$ equivalent circuit was adopted to model the physical phenomena resulting from electromagnetic coupling and high-frequency operation. The method for calculating the oxide capacitance has included the contribution of the fringing electric fields for better prediction of the inductor characteristics. In order to verify the performed modeling, a set of octagonal on-chip spiral inductors with different geometries were simulated in the Momentum ADS and the main figures of merit of the inductor were compared. The mean error between the model and EM simulation was 3.6% for the DC inductance, 7.7% for the maximum value of the quality factor and 1.3% for the self-resonance frequency. © 2018 IEEE.

This paper presents Koch fractal aperture-coupled patch antennas operating in industrial scientific and medical band at 60 GHz (57 GHz to 64 GHz), for on-chip application. This work is the continuation of the development of aperture-coupled antennas with aperture and patch element built in 2 μm-thick aluminum lying on two layers of silicon with a height of 200 μm. The use of Koch fractal allowed the development of aperture-coupled antennas of greater perimeter with more metal in the patch elements, which promoted an increase in the gain. The observed gain for Koch fractal level 2 was of 10.55 dBi, with a bandwidth of 7.23 GHz, covering the ISM 60 GHz Band, and an increase of less than 10% in total patch dimension. For Koch fractal levels 0 (square), a polarization close to circular was achieved, with an axial ratio less than 6 at resonant frequencies. © 2018 IEEE.

This paper presents a single-phase to single-phase three-wire converter, which comprises a conventional two-level(2L) four-leg converter in series with H-bridge. The H-bridges are supplied from the main converter by means of a DC-DC converter with a high-frequency transformer. The proposed converter: (i) can supply three loads, wherein two are phase voltages 180 degrees-lagged, and a third load with twice the amplitude of the phase voltage, (ii) has the output voltages with constant frequency and amplitude even under unbalanced loads, and (iii) has sinusoidal grid current and high-power factor even supplying nonlinear loads. In this way, the proposed system is suitable for uninterruptible power supply. Furthermore, the pulsewidth modulation (PWM) technique is proposed to generate the pole voltages of the converters, so that the output voltages have better power quality. The proposed converter is compared with a conventional 2L in terms of harmonic distortion. Simulated results are provided to verify the operation of the proposed system.
