Analog-to-information converters (AIC) are physical implementations of Compressed Sensing that have been proposed to overcome the technological limitations of the analog-to-digital converters (ADC) in terms of bandwidth and quantity of data produced after conversion. The AIC hardware suffers from non-idealities of components and subsystems, which reduces the quality of the measured signal reconstruction. Such effects can be compensated by calibration that normally have been implemented in the signal recovery methods. In this paper, we analyze a calibration method for AIC that takes into account only the measurements produced by the AIC. Results show that the hardware calibration improves the signal reconstruction with regard to signal-to-noise and distortion ratio (SINAD), independent of the reconstruction algorithm.

In this work it is presented a two-phase open-end winding induction motor (IM) driven by an improved current source inverter (CSI). The proposed inverter has independent full quadrant operation, lower DC-link current value, high magnetics power density, 25% more efficient and high AC output voltage waveform quality compared to conventional CSI solutions. A back-to-back AC-DC-AC current source converter is used to drive the two-phase open-end winding IM, where in the AC-DC portion it is used a conventional three-phase three-leg rectifier, and the proposed two-phase inverter is used in the DC-AC portion. The two-phase IM model is also presented. Two motor drive methods for the improved CSI are used: Volts/Hertz and modified q-axis indirect flux oriented control. Simulation and experimental results are provided in order to validate the theoretical approach. © 2017 IEEE.

This article presents a parameter study on the applied game theory in Genetic Algorithm (GA), performing an analysis of the game Prisoner's Dilemma applied in the solution of four constrained engineering problems. Simulations were applied in four different variations of the game, in order to find the best configuration for the analyzed problems. Then, after obtaining the best configuration of the game, we performed an analysis of the incidence of Alpha and Beta weights, present in GA fitness with Social Interaction, using the game that best suited each problem, employing sixteen different weight configurations. At end, the results obtained authenticated the influence of the Social Interaction process in the essence of GA.

Resolver is an angular position sensor widely used in electric/hybrid vehicles and robotics. However, estimating the angular position and speed from resolver outputs is as difficult task. Most algorithms in literature use trigonometric functions to estimate the angular position. However, these functions are difficult to implement, especially in FPGAs. On the other hand, in speed vector control of three-phase motors, the angular position is only used to estimate the mechanical speed and Park transformation matrix. This paper presents a simple technique to get the mechanical speed and Park matrix without calculating trigonometric functions and without estimating directly the angular position. Filtering and synchronous demodulation allows obtaining the sine and cosine of the angular position, while the compensation of the delay produced by filtering and the estimation of the Park matrix are done using simple trigonometric properties and taking advantage that the number of pole pairs is an integer number. Experimental results show the accuracy of the proposed approach.

The following paper presents a hybrid Swarm Intelligence algorithm, named Competitive Evolutionary Multi-Colony Optimization (CEMCO). CEMCO is based on the well-known bee inspired algorithm Artificial Bee Colony (ABC), introducing Evolutionary Strategies (ES)under a parallel master-slave architecture utilizing the General Purpose Computing on Graphics Processing Units (GPGPU)paradigm. The goal of this approach is to enhance the overall performance of the master algorithm, producing high quality solutions, and significant solutions under a reduced processing time. Performance evaluation of CEMCO is performed by two large scale constrained optimization problems: Design of Pressure Vessel (DPV)and Welded Beam Design (WBD). Results obtained are compared against prominent techniques found in the literature.

Heterogeneous mobile networks are already a reality and their densification has been put forward as one of the suggested solutions to meet the expected demands for 5th generation (5G) mobile networks. However, in the current networks, it is still common for fixed parameters to be used for the configuration of the network although this strategy does not always prove to be efficient. It is within this context that the concept of self-organizing networks (SONs) has been established, in which several network parameters are automatically adjusted on the basis of measurements and intelligent systems in real time. This paper sets out a methodology for an intelligent handover decision in heterogeneous LTE networks based on measurements and Fuzzy logic. The results showed that the proposed algorithm is efficient and can assist in the self-organization of the network.

This paper presents the development of aperture-coupled patch antennas operating in industrial scientific and medical band at 60 GHz (57 GHZ to 64 GHz), with square and circular shapes, for on-chip application. The aperture-coupled antenna proposed is composed by a transmission feed line, an aperture and patch element built in aluminum with 10 micrometers of thickness lying on two layers of silicon with height of 200 micrometers. Dimensions of the square and circular antennas were calculated according to the effective wavelength for resonance frequency at 60 GHz in order to match at 50 Ohms. The proposed antennas have been simulated using the commercial software ANSYS. Both antennas show omnidirectional radiation pattern, with half power beamwidth greater than 149 degrees. Square patch presented a more compact structure, with dimension less than 1.55 mm, return loss of -55 dB, and bandwidth of 3.98 GHz, however the circular antenna, with a greater metallic area, achieved a better gain of 5.88 dBi.

This paper introduces a new breed of four-wire (4W) multilevel shunt compensator to deal with either harmonic or reactive power compensation. The converter configurations are generalized for K-stages and the main benefits of proposed topologies lie on i) multilevel waveforms generation, ii) single dc-link unit and iii) modular characteristic. The configurations are based on cascaded transformers along with three-phase-bridge (TPB) converters. These converters are directly connected to the transformer primary side. A suitable PWM strategy combined with an appropriate transformer turns ratio guarantees the desirable multilevel output waveforms. The modularity feature provides simple maintenance and makes the proposed shunt active power filters (SAPFs) an attractive solution in comparison with conventional configurations. The configuration model and overall control are addressed, as well. Simulation and experimental results are presented for theoretical validation. © 2017 IEEE.

This paper purposes the development of an isolated battery charger. In energy storage systems, these devices are essential, performing batteries charging in the way to maintain their lifecycle and safety since they are main responsible for the costs associated with these systems. In many works theses circuits are implemented through bidirectional Full-Bridge converters. These converters require auxiliary circuits to reduce their switching losses. However, circuits such as snubbers or voltage clampers are not adequately addressed in these works since their use is undesirable for bidirectional operation. To eliminate these circuits in isolated converters, this work presents a switching technique applied in a Full-Bridge converter with the objective to reduce overvoltage in semiconductors and make it suitable for use in bidirectional converters, as in the charge of battery banks.

This paper presents the development of a displacement measurement system formed by a Linear Variable Differential Transformer (LVDT) and an electronic instrumentation circuit. A mechanical structure was constructed as a coil to be elaborated from a preliminary analysis of the response of the device. A circuit was developed for the excitation of the LVDT, analog processing and signal conditioning in order to obtain a proportional DC signal for the displacement in its core. The response of the measuring system was obtained for a total range of 80 mm of displacement. The measurement deviations were less than + 0.16 mm and - 0.15 mm.
