This paper proposes a multilevel shunt active power filter (SAPF) to deal with either harmonic currents compensation or reactive power compensation. Such a device can reduce the harmonic distortion at the grid currents provided by non-linear loads located in stiff systems. The proposed SAPF is based on three-phase bridge (TPB) converters connected to cascaded single-phase transformers. The transformers arrangement permits the compensator to use a single dc-link unit which simplifies the control strategy and number of sensors. The multilevel waveforms are generated by using a suitable PWM strategy associated with the transformers turns ratio. Modularity and simple maintenance make the proposed SAPF an attractive solution compared to some conventional configurations. The model, PWM technique and control strategy, are presented as well as studies considering harmonic distortion and semiconductor losses estimation. Simulation and experimental results are presented in order to validate theoretical approaches. © 2016 IEEE.

In this paper is presented a new printed monopole antenna, bio-inspired by jasmine flower, that meets the Federal Communications Commission parameters for ultra-wideband systems. The design of the printed monopole antenna in jasmine flower has developed from a printed monopole antenna with circular geometry, with comparison results. The measured results of bio-inspired antenna in the jasmine flower showed compatibility with the parameters required by the FCC for ultra-wideband technology. It obtained bandwidth of 9.75 GHz, half-power beamwidth of 148 degrees, omnidirectional radiation pattern, gain of 5.99 dBi, power spectral density below -41.3 dBm across the bandwidth of ultra-wideband technology, small pulse distortion, and constant group delay, with variations of less than 2ns.

This paper addresses the problem of designing an event-triggered strategy for discrete-time systems with an observer-based controller. The considered system has the actuator and the sensor in different nodes separated by a network. The strategy consists in minimizing the use of the network by only transmitting data from the observer to the controller and from the controller to the actuator when a trigger is generated by an event-trigger function. Based on the Lyapunov theory, conditions for the stability of the closed-loop system in terms of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) are derived. Convex optimization problems are provided to tune the proposed trigger functions aiming at reducing the usage of the network. Simulation examples illustrate the proposed method and compare the efficiency of the proposed optimization problems.

This paper proposes a methodology to design stabilizing event-trigger strategies for PI controlled linear continuous-time plants subject to input saturation. Using Lyapunov theory techniques, LMI-based conditions are derived to guarantee regional (or global, when possible) asymptotic stability of the origin. These conditions can be cast in an optimization problem to choose the parameters of the trigger function aiming at reducing the sampling activity, while ensuring the regional stability of the origin with respect to a given set of admissible initial states. Simulation results illustrate the application and potentialities of the method.

This paper presents three-phase converter topologies for four-wire systems. The converters are series connected by three-phase transformers with accessible neutral. They possess a common dc-link, which is the power supply of the system, and two or more converters, where one of them is connected directly to the ac system, and the others cascaded through three-phase transformers. The three-phase transformers have turn ratios that are calculated in order to maximize the number of levels produced by the inverters. The Level-Shifted Pulse Width Modulation technique is developed for two and three cascaded converters, and a control system is used to set the electrical grid currents on desired values. Simulation and experimental results are exposed for configurations with two cascaded converters, each one with either three or four legs.

A study on the length and type of the window function used in the Short-Time Fourier Transform (STFT), along with its suitability to extract the harmonic content from a High Impedance Fault (HIF) current is presented on this paper. Additionally, a method to detect HIF based on the phase angle of the third harmonic current is developed. The proposed algorithm performance is evaluated by two database: one containing HIF simulated signals and other containing actual HIF oscillographic records. This paper presents the current state of this research, and, so far, the method is able to detect HIF occurring in different types of surfaces (wet and dry), as well as it is insusceptible to typical noises present in the real oscillograms.

Ferromagnetic materials have magnetic properties which determine its magnetic field conductivity characteristics. Such characteristics are extremely important for the proper selection and use of these materials in measurement processes, for example. Therefore, this paper presents an equipment for the characterization of ferromagnetic materials constructed in a laboratory. The experimental results of this equipment are acquired and compared with the experimental results obtained with an industrially manufactured apparatus called hysteresisgraph, designed to provide magnetic characterization of magnetic materials. The results of the comparison demonstrate that the equipment presented has low relative error and can be applied in academic projects which require magnetic characterization of ferromagnetic materials developed in the laboratory. © 2015 IEEE.

This paper proposes a low cost three-phase power quality meter. Due to its characteristics, the meter can be applied for residential or small businesses use. The proposed device uses the power definitions from IEEE Standard 1459-2010. Moreover, it calculates the true rms value, the individual harmonics, and the voltage unbalanced factor. In order to validate the power quality meter, simulations and experimental results are presented. The results are presented on a web page that can be accessed by any device with internet access.
