Modeling a comprehensive multi-criteria, multi-period framework for assessing global sustainability performance: Insights from 164 selected countries

Global concerns regarding sustainable development have become commonplace in all decision-making scales and have been accompanied by the need to develop proper modeling systems. Indicators and goals recognizing the interconnections between social, economic, and ecological systems are increasingly acknowledged as a necessary pathway, urging research efforts and extensive literature reviews to explore and combine indicators. The Five Sectors Sustainability Model is presented as a multi-criteria decision-making tool to compose a comprehensive view of global sustainability performance between 2000 and 2022, considering the progress or deviation from proposed goals and targets. Since few publications address the challenges faced in all geographic regions, especially in the Global South, this study presents the Five Sector Sustainability Model as a multi-criteria decision-making tool for ranking sustainability performance in 164 nations. The results indicate that few nations remained at the top of the sustainability ranking, primarily due to environmental and economic factors, while 58 countries maintained a medium sustainability level. At the other end of the spectrum, 12 countries consistently ranked low in sustainability performance throughout the studied timeframe. The diversity of economies at each sustainability level and their performance over time suggests that, despite the United Nations' fundamental role in supporting countries to overcome sustainability challenges, the growth of international cooperation for sustainable development and the global approach to the Sustainable Development Goals, local initiatives remain essential for fostering global sustainability. © 2025 Elsevier B.V.

This study investigates barriers to adopting Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in road freight transportation, a sector where operational efficiency is crucial. A mixed-method approach comprising a Systematic Literature Review, the Fuzzy Delphi Method, and the Best and Worst Method was employed to evaluate these barriers. Five main obstacles were identified: lack of top management and investor support, resistance to change, absence of economic and political incentives, uncertainties regarding return on investment, and high technology investment costs. The most significant barrier was the lack of top management support, which influenced investment and strategic decisions. Theoretically, the research enhances understanding of technology adoption barriers in road freight transportation, providing insights for future academic and practical applications. From a managerial point of view, this study offers insights to improve ICT adoption strategies, thereby boosting sector efficiency and competitiveness. © 2024 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V.

A comparative analysis between clustered and non-clustered companies using innovation indicators

The Innovation has become a central and pivotal element in the development of organizations. The aim of this paper was to analyze and compare the Innovation Indexes using indicators in two Brazilian regions, in order to identify if independent international companies have higher innovation indexes than those that belonging to an industrial cluster. Methodologically, it was used a research tool to identify the Innovation Index of these companies (questionnaires with open and closed questions), applied to the company's senior managers. The results showed that there is a link between the innovation index and companies within an industrial cluster. Thus, it was possible to observe that the reunion in clusters favors the development of innovation, observing that the general indexes obtained were bigger than those of the independent international companies were. Furthermore, the study made possible to obtain a clear view on the importance of different aspects of innovation and their influence on the Innovation Index obtained on both scenarios. © 2015, IFAC (International Federation of Automatic Control) Hosting by Elsevier Ltd. Sponge cities, crucial components of urban eco-infrastructure, play a vital role in mitigating urban waterlogging, enhancing water resource management, and improving ecosystem resilience. However, the economic and ecosystem services benefits of low-impact development (LID) facilities in cities remain unclear. This study classified sponge city facilities as distinct subsectors within an input-output framework and develops a partial closure model to assess their economic and ecological impacts during construction and operation phases. Additionally, an ecological satellite account for carbon sinks, SS removal and water conservation is compiled to quantify the economic value of ecosystem services. Using Xining City's sponge city project as a case study, the findings reveal that the primary sector benefits most from water conservation (34.58 %), while government consumption (58.9 %) is the largest indirect beneficiary of suspended substance (SS) removal and carbon sequestration, reflecting the public good nature of environmental benefits. Sponge city construction stimulates economic activity, with total inputs exceeding four times the direct investment, driving growth in hidden sectors such as food processing, finance, and energy distribution. Additionally, the carbon sequestration from sponge city facilities offsets construction-related emissions within 4.07 years, though only 41.78 % of maintenance-phase emissions are balanced by carbon sinks, emphasizing the need for long-term sustainability measures. These results highlight sponge cities' unique role in economic restructuring, distinguishing them from traditional infrastructure. The study provides a framework for integrating ecological and economic indicators, supporting evidence-based urban planning and the transition toward a sustainable, eco-economic development model. © 2025 Elsevier Inc.

The literature identifies a trend of new vehicles development at global level resulting in a global product development (GPD). In this context, this paper aims at analyzing the decentralization of GPD in an assembler of commercial vehicles. Factors that contribute to the decentralization of GPD are considered in this investigation as well as their causes. Case-based research is adopted as the research methodological approach, conducted in a Brazilian assembler and its headquarters in Germany. The results indicate that the organization reacts similarly to other economics industrial sectors (e.g. telecommunications) when facing the decision of decentralizing GPD. Unlike other studies, it was also found that modular design has influence on the GPD decentralization process. The interest of the local market and historical aspects of the evolution of the subsidiary were found to be relevant. From these results a proposed structure for GPD and adoption of modular design is suggested. © 2012 IEEE.

The objective of this study was to identify the perspectives and factors affecting management performance of companies in horizontal networks. The instrument used for the selection of articles was Proknow C-structured. As a result, 20 articles relevant to the research topic were found in the 13 selected articles from the databases. After, the systematic analysis of the articles, it was identified eight perspectives: economic/social, financial, customer, environment, social capital, process, growth/learning and collaboration beyond 25 factors. Such factors and perspectives will serve as an aid for managers to evaluate the management of a horizontal network and serve as a starting point for future studies. © 2015, IFAC (International Federation of Automatic Control) Hosting by Elsevier Ltd. Organizational human factors as barriers to energy efficiency in electrical motors systems in industry

This paper presents a study accomplished in the State of Parana in Southern Brazil, aiming at verifying the correlation between organizational human factors (OHF) and the level of energy losses in organizations. The purpose is to subsidize the formularization of institutional policies in organizations to improve the energy efficiency in the productive sector. The research was carried out in ten industries of the following sectors: pulp and paper;food;wood and chemical products. The losses of electric energy were determined in motor systems with the aid of a mathematical model and the evaluation of 27 OHF identified in the literature review was made with the supervisors in the industries by means of a structurized questionnaire. Seven OHF had presented significant correlation with energy losses and six of them are inversely proportional to the losses, in accordance with linear regression analysis. The inversely proportional factors to the losses also with significant correlation are considered determinative OHF and constitute barriers for energy efficiency in organizations. These barriers are linked with the following organizational areas: management system;education of employees;strategical vision. The study recommends the implementation of the determinative OHF in organizations as a way to transpose the human barriers for energy efficiency. (C) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This paper intends to discuss the concepts of knowledge, information and data and their use on a Competitive Intelligence process. An information concept is presented and the information science influences on the way that it has been used, as so data gathering as internal expert service process support. A relationship between the Competitive Intelligence process approach and the use of the established resources for information process using electronic media is displayed. There is a difference among data, information and knowledge taking the reader up to the Competitive Intelligence and Knowledge Management concepts found at current literature over this subject. A user connection to knowledge is described in order to make a distinction between the knowledge universe and the user universe, taking the recorded knowledge as a "bridge" connecting both universes. The knowledge universe access way is taken by the language that is in use, while at user universe is represented by the retrieval system that is adopted. A discussion over the frontiers and aspects of each universe is held, as well as the condition for inter-relationship, resulting in an idealistic representation for the user and knowledge relationship. Finally, this paper presents a few points that illustrate the Information Science contributions for the Knowledge Management process.
