For the last four years the Laboratory of Biometrology of PUC-Rio has been working in the development of magnetic field transducers to be used in biomedical applications - especially in the three-dimensional localization of needles inserted in the human body and in the measurment of arterial pulse waves. While previous investigations were based on the behavior of the magnitude of the impedance of Giant Magnetoimpedance (GMI) ribbon-shaped sensors, this manuscript presents the preliminary results of a new research that considers the changes in the phase characteristics of GMI sensors due to varying low-intensity magnetic fields. In spite of being less explored in the literature, the work carried out so far indicates that the sensitivity of the phase can lead to more promising results than the ones already obtained with transducers based on the variation of the impedance magnitude. By means of examples showing that the sensitivity of the phase is affected by parameters (amplitude, frequency and DC level) of the AC biasing current that flows throught the sensor, this manuscript discusses how an ideal stimulation condition was derived in order to obtain more sensitive transducers. It is also examined the influence of the ribbon length in the sensitivity. A new conditioning electronic circuit - responsible for the excitation and measurement of the GMI sensor, and designed to work in the 100kHz to 5Mhz range - has been developed and is presented in the manuscript. Simulation studies of the complete transducer, including the conditioning circuit and based on data obtained from measured curves, have shown that an improvement of 10 to 100 times can be expected when compared to the sensitivity of previous magnitude-based transducers.

The AxeBot robot's mechanical design, a fully autonomous mobile robot, for the RoboCup Small Size League, is presented in this paper. The AxeBot robot uses three omnidirectional wheels for movement and is equipped by a shooting device for shooting the ball in different directions. Once the AxeBot robot is a fully autonomous mobile robot all the sensors, engines, servos, batteries, and the computer system, must be embedded on. The project can be separated in four different parts: the chassis design, the wheel design, the shooting device design and the overall assembly which makes a shell design possible to cover the whole robot. The AxeBot mechanical design brings up a new chassis concept for three wheels omnidirectional robot, also present a new shooting device, and finally present AxeBots prototype assembly.

System for Conformity Assessment of Electrocardiographs

Safety and performance assessment are essential for most medical devices. In some countries they are mandatory at least prior to the launch of the equipment in the market. Aiming at contributing with the assurance of the metrological reliability of analog and digital electrocardiographs (ECGs), this work presents the development of a system for ECG conformity assessment according to IEC 60601-2-51 and OIML R90 standards. The proposed system has been calibrated with traceability to SI units and is structured in two subsystems: evaluation of electrical safety and evaluation of performance. The first subsystem performs grounding tests, leakage current tests and insulation tests, and is based on commercial equipment. The second subsystem evaluates the metrological characteristics of ECGs and is composed by software in LabVIEW, a digital-to-analog converter and three signal conditioners. The system has been evaluated using two digital ECGs in use in a public hospital of Rio de Janeiro. The tests performed indicate that the system complies with the requirements of IEC 60601-2-51. It has been observed a maximum error on the standard signals lower than 1% during the calibration of the equipment that integrates the performance evaluation subsystem. The non-conformities observed during the system validation by means of ECG essays were probably due to the high noise level present in the hospital environment, being necessary the continuous use of digital filters. Also, limitations on the system concerning common-mode rejection ratio, temperature drift and reticulate of time and amplitude have been observed and solutions are being studied.

This work aims at investigating the influence of luminance information and environment illumination on skin classification. We explore Bayesian approaches to perform automatic classification of human skin pixels on digital images, using color features as input. Two probabilistic skin color models were built on different color spaces (RGB, normalized RG, HSI, HS, YCbCr and CbCr) and tested in a task of automatic pixel classification into skin and non-skin. Analyses of classification performance were done by presenting an illumination controlled image database containing images acquired in four different illumination conditions (shadow, sun, incandescent and fluorescent lights) to these classifiers. Our experiments show that building probabilistic skin color models using the CbCr color space generally improves performance of the classifiers and that best performance is achieved in shadow illumination.

This paper presents a mathematical model for proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) taking into account the basic electrochemical equations but including the boost power converter. This approaching is suitable for design and simulation of power electronics systems with embedded FCs as power supplies. The simplified model uses the Kirchoff's voltage law (KVL) applied to the conventional electric equivalent model of PEMFCs. This work is fully implemented in PSim¿ as a general mathematical model and referred to literature data including the boost converter, mostly used as the power interface for FCs. In this way, the model is fully evaluated by viewing the interface just as a power converter.

The present work studies the optimization of a circular body with an intense heat flux by Constructal Design. The problem concerns the minimization of the global thermal resistance of a three-dimensional structure submitted to an intense uniform heat flux, which is cooled through microchannels inserted in the circular body. For the optimization the body and the channels volumes are kept constants, while the geometrical configuration varies. Two geometric configurations were studied: radial and with one level of bifurcation-the first construct. The conservation equations of mass, momentum and energy are solved using a commercial package based on the finite volume method. For the radial configuration the system was successfully optimized as function of the number of ducts intruded into the body. For the bifurcated configuration Constructal Design led to a double optimization: one as function of the angle between the branches on the bifurcation (δ) and other as function of the ratio between the length of a single duct (L 0 ) and the radius of the circular domain (L).

This manuscript proposes the automatic design and synthesis of nanometer circuits and the optimization of molecular devices by the evolvable hardware technique. The potential of Evolvable Hardware is investigated by means of three different applications: synthesis of molecular electronic circuits, synthesis and optimization of Quantum-dot Cellular Automata (QCA) and the optimization of OLED (Organic Light-Emitting Diodes) parameters. The molecular electronic circuit synthesis is developed using the molecular transistor simulated in SPICE. QCA is a new paradigm used in the development of digital logical circuits, not using the flow of current. This new paradigm allows the development of a new generation of computers, faster and with smaller energy dissipation. Finally, the optimization of OLED parameters is developed using the electrical behavior model of a multi-layer device. In this model, each sub-layer in the emissive layer has a ratio of ETM (Electron Transport Material) and a ratio of HTM (Hole Transport Material). The first results show that the technique is able to synthesize and optimize circuits that perform the logic specified by the user, avoiding noise and other problems that could lead to malfunction. Moreover, the EHW technique is able to optimize the parameters of an organic device, such as OLED. © 2006 IEEE.

This paper is written with the didactic purpose of exploring and indicating possibilities to power companies in the Balkan region for the application of adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) models in load prediction with real load data set. ANFIS models were trained and tested using 15-minute load data collected in Portugal by the electric power company EDP during a 42 day period. Simulation results gave promising results especially considering small size of used data set. Although the objective of the paper is to demonstrate possibilities for practical implementation, further research and improvement including the contributions of similar approaches in the world must be done

The consistency models are responsible for managing the state of shared data for the applications of a distributed shared memory (DSM) systems. The already proposed consistency models are inflexible and cannot adapt to the workload and environments characteristics. So, they cannot achieve the best performance for the workloads and environments in all the cases. In this work, we propose, present and analyze a reconfigurable consistency model (ROCoM -Reconfigurable Object Consistency Model) for object based DSMs. ROCoM behavior was represented using a reconfigurable algorithm (RA) and its analysis was made using a simulation tool. Our results show that ROCoM, on average, had 34% (upper bound) better performance than other ones. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.
