The dynamic resistance measurement (DRM) is a technique that can be used to evaluate the degradation level of circuit breaker contacts. It stands out from the usual technique (static resistance measurement) by allowing the assessment of both the main and the arcing contacts, thus providing a more complete and reliable diagnosis for circuit breakers. However, it is a non-standardized technique and the method for analyzing the results has not yet been defined. Therefore, in this paper, a sensibility analysis of attributes from the dynamic resistance curves is presented. Beyond the mean resistance and the area under the resistance curve, other statistical attributes are analyzed, such as median and variance. The results of this work point to the use of more than one DRM attribute for the continuous evaluation of high voltage circuit breaker arcing contacts. © 2018 IEEE.

Analog-to-information converters (AIC) are physical implementations of Compressed Sensing that have been proposed to overcome the technological limitations of the analog-to-digital converters (ADC) in terms of bandwidth and quantity of data produced after conversion. The AIC hardware suffers from non-idealities of components and subsystems, which reduces the quality of the measured signal reconstruction. Such effects can be compensated by calibration that normally have been implemented in the signal recovery methods. In this paper, we analyze a calibration method for AIC that takes into account only the measurements produced by the AIC. Results show that the hardware calibration improves the signal reconstruction with regard to signal-to-noise and distortion ratio (SINAD), independent of the reconstruction algorithm. © 2018 IEEE.

This paper proposes a data acquisition system based on wireless sensor networks to measure the methane concentration level in a sanitary landfill, and a sensor node prototype for this application. The sensor node was designed to measure temperature, relative humidity and methane concentration. Based on the IEEE 802.15.4 standard, the proposed system allows a continuous monitoring of the methane emissions and reduces the exposition of workers to the hazardous environmental conditions of the landfill. A sensor node prototype was developed and tested as a demonstration of the feasibility of the system.

This paper presents the small-signal modeling and analysis of an isolated bidirectional DC-DC converter. The converter is implement based on two Full-Bridge converters. The system is designed to act as a charge/discharge controller for battery banks. The model for each mode of operation is developed using the average state-space model approach. To verify the models, simulations are performed using PSIM software in addition to experimental results obtained from a 200 W prototype that connects a 60 V battery bank to a 230 V DC link. © 2018 IEEE.

In this paper, we present the modeling for a rapid characterization of integrated spiral inductors. Closed-form has been used to estimate the parameters of the equivalent circuit, which are calculated as a function of the parameters of the inductor physical design. The double-$\pi$ equivalent circuit was adopted to model the physical phenomena resulting from electromagnetic coupling and high-frequency operation. The method for calculating the oxide capacitance has included the contribution of the fringing electric fields for better prediction of the inductor characteristics. In order to verify the performed modeling, a set of octagonal on-chip spiral inductors with different geometries were simulated in the Momentum ADS and the main figures of merit of the inductor were compared. The mean error between the model and EM simulation was 3.6% for the DC inductance, 7.7% for the maximum value of the quality factor and 1.3% for the self-resonance frequency. © 2018 IEEE.

With the growing diffusion of the Internet of Things concept and the advances in low-power electronics, the RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology has gained attention in various fields, from entertainment to medicine, for example. Its sensing and signal processing capability allows us to highlight this technology as one of the main solutions in reducing cost and complexity in such applications. This work presents the design and test of a flexible RFID tag operating in the American UHF frequency of 915 MHz, for human body motion detection. Through the analysis of the Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) variation with time and its Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) it was possible to ensure the tag's applicability.

This paper presents Koch fractal aperture-coupled patch antennas operating in industrial scientific and medical band at 60 GHz (57 GHz to 64 GHz), for on-chip application. This work is the continuation of the development of aperture-coupled antennas with aperture and patch element built in 2 μm-thick aluminum lying on two layers of silicon with a height of 200 μm. The use of Koch fractal allowed the development of aperture-coupled antennas of greater perimeter with more metal in the patch elements, which promoted an increase in the gain. The observed gain for Koch fractal level 2 was of 10.55 dBi, with a bandwidth of 7.23 GHz, covering the ISM 60 GHz Band, and an increase of less than 10% in total patch dimension. For Koch fractal levels 0 (square), a polarization close to circular was achieved, with an axial ratio less than 6 at resonant frequencies.

This paper presents the development of aperture-coupled patch antennas operating in industrial scientific and medical band at 60 GHz (57 GHZ to 64 GHz), with square and circular shapes, for on-chip application. The aperture-coupled antenna proposed is composed by a transmission feed line, an aperture and patch element built in aluminum with 10 micrometers of thickness lying on two layers of silicon with height of 200 micrometers. Dimensions of the square and circular antennas were calculated according to the effective wavelength for resonance frequency at 60 GHz in order to match at 50 Ohms. The proposed antennas have been simulated using the commercial software ANSYS. Both antennas show omnidirectional radiation pattern, with half power beamwidth greater than 149 degrees. Square patch presented a more compact structure, with dimension less than 1.55 mm, return loss of-55 dB, and bandwidth of 3.98 GHz, however the circular antenna, with a greater metallic area, achieved a better gain of 5.88 dBi. © 2017 IEEE.

This article presents a parameter study on the applied game theory in Genetic Algorithm (GA), performing an analysis of the game Prisoner's Dilemma applied in the solution of four constrained engineering problems. Simulations were applied in four different variations of the game, in order to find the best configuration for the analyzed problems. Then, after obtaining the best configuration of the game, we performed an analysis of the incidence of Alpha and Beta weights, present in GA fitness with Social Interaction, using the game that best suited each problem, employing sixteen different weight configurations. At end, the results obtained authenticated the influence of the Social Interaction process in the essence of GA.
