This work proposes an efficient texture classification strategy performed in the wavelet domain in order to characterize healthy and pathological speech signals from recurrence plots (RP). The two-dimensional wavelet transform is applied to the recurrence plots at one resolution level. Thirteen Haralick texture features are obtained from each approximation and detail subband coefficients. In classification, multilayer perceptron (MLP) neural networks with cross validation are employed. Classification accuracy is improved and the number of features is reduced by particle swarm optimization (PSO). Results suggest that this method may be useful for pathological voice discrimination.

This article discusses the actual failure rate of electronic components when these are exposed to harsh environments, which can include vibration, dust, humidity, high temperature and others. It presents a compilation on the physico-chemical effects that can take place when electronic components are stressed and how such effects can reduce the component life. It is also presented a compilation of the results of a thorough and comprehensive research on different standards for reliability prediction, along with a critical and comparative analysis between the methodologies and applications related to each one of them. Furthermore, to provide the reader a broader understanding of the methodology used in these standards, an example employing a typical SV-PWM converter used in motor drive systems, submitted to different environmental stresses, is used as a case study. © 2014 IEEE.

Background: Experimental and epidemiological studies indicate an association between exposure to particulate matter (PM) air pollution and increased risk of type 2 diabetes. In view of the high and increasing prevalence of diabetes, we aimed to quantify the burden of type 2 diabetes attributable to PM_2·5 originating from ambient and household air pollution. Methods: We systematically compiled all relevant cohort and case-control studies assessing the effect of exposure to household and ambient fine particulate matter (PM_2·5) air pollution on type 2 diabetes incidence and mortality. We derived an exposure–response curve from the extracted relative risk estimates using the MR-BRT (meta-regression—Bayesian, regularised, trimmed) tool. The estimated curve was linked to ambient and household PM_2·5 exposures from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2019, and estimates of the attributable burden (population attributable fractions and rates per 100 000 population of deaths and disability-adjusted life-years) for 204 countries from 1990 to 2019 were calculated. We also assessed the role of changes in exposure, population size, age, and type 2 diabetes incidence in the observed trend in PM_2·5-attributable type 2 diabetes burden. All estimates are presented with 95% uncertainty intervals. Findings: In 2019, approximately a fifth of the global burden of type 2 diabetes was attributable to PM_2·5 exposure, with an estimated 3·78 (95% uncertainty interval 2·68–4·83) deaths per 100 000 population and 167 (117–223) disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) per 100 000 population. Approximately 13·4% (9·49–17·5) of deaths and 13·6% (9·73–17·9) of DALYs due to type 2 diabetes were contributed by ambient PM2·5, and 6·50% (4·22–9·53) of deaths and 5·92% (3·81–8·64) of DALYs by household air pollution. Laryngeal pathologies directly affect the quality of the voice. In the last years, digital signal processing techniques have been applied for detection of vocal fold pathologies through speech signal analysis. In this work, a binary Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm using Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) neural network is employed for the selection of the most significative features in a pathological voice detection system. The discrimination between healthy and pathological speech signals are obtained by 52 Haralick texture features, extracted from two-dimensional wavelet coefficients of the speech signals recurrence plots. The fitness function adopted is based in the maxima accuracy rate. Experimental results show that the use of PSO increased the accuracy rates with a minimum number of features.

programmability is one of the key factors on software defined networks (SDN), once it allows to decouple between data plan and control plan. However, in such context, managing several applications' inputs and outputs is a little explored task on controllers field, which are not in a controlled and organized environment. This article proposes a method to make SDN applications to reach the administrator, allow him to manage his use in the network. This proposal is validated through performance tests in the repository, which stores the applications, along with developed modules to help its management and control, making the organization and coordination method safe, efficient and adjustable to any controller on software-defined network.

Two popular wireless communication devices are considered in this paper. Firstly, the Bluetooth which is one of the most popular mobile accessories and the Google glasses which are a representation of the new futuristic vision. It is well known that the absorption of electromagnetic waves on the human head for a certain period of time may lead to health problems such as headaches, or even worse, brain cancer. The Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) is simulated for three different head models and compared with the available international recommendations. The first model used is the Specific Anthropomorphic Mannequin (SAM phantom), as well as two realistic models of human head (i.e., a 34 years old adult and a 10 years old child). The simulations were performed using the finite difference time domain (FDTD) method and the frequency used to feed the antennas was 2.45 GHz.

The optimization problems of industrial process attracted many researches since the early 90's of the last century. The production volume increase, lifespan shorten of the products and technological advances pushed the industries to seek for low cost and quick implementation solutions. One of the processes that became the core for increasing the sales volumes was the Surface Mount Technology - SMT composed by printing, automated chip mounting and reflow which replaced the Through Hole Technology - THT. This paper formulated a new point of view for modular chip mounters based on the already known feeder assignment problem and head motion problem applying the global optimization using the nonsorting dominance genetic algorithm the NSGAH in regard of the total cycle time reduction. The modeling of the fitness functions were presented and the multi criteria optimization tool was described using the machine functions and constraints. The same method could be applied to describe other type of machines to support future research.

One of the principles of Smart Grids is to have a communication network that will integrate equipment allowing the monitoring and operation to be performed in real time in order to improve the quality indicators. However, this migration to an automated and monitored environment will demand many resources that will be used to perform the migration gradually. Therefore, this work proposes a methodology for allocation of meters with the function of improving the accuracy of state estimation algorithms, but also considering other selection criteria, given the fact that many of automation equipment such as reclosers, automated switches, voltage controllers also perform the function of meters. The paper demonstrates the implementation of a state estimator based on the WLS method, which serves as the basis for the analysis of quantitative criteria such as the accuracy of the estimator, losses, voltage levels and reliability. Thus, the criteria are analyzed considering the needs defined by experts through the Analytic Hierarchy Process, so alternatives of locations and equipment can be prioritized. Finally, the methodology is demonstrated by experimental evaluation on a real feeder. © 2013 IEEE.

Representing the signal power at a studied environment through a mathematical model is one major challenge of signal propagation study. In this work is proposed an empirical Autoregressive Moving-Average (ARMA) model for signal strength prediction in indoor environments. A Genetic Algorithm (GA) was employed to calibrate the model (finding coefficients), thus, allowing future improvements without major changes to the program source code.
