Aiming to study the temperature field changes, the House VI project was checked. This house is located in Vila37, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, a dead-end small street with only one inlet/outlet. In the houses of Vila37, the indoor ventilation is restricted to the facade windows. Giving the impossibility of introducing cross-ventilation in a traditional way, a short wind-catch was previously added with positive results;therefore, simulations with long wind-catch are being carried out. The analysis started by solving the air-circulation problem by using a finite element method and after, with the wind fields added, the heat transfer problem was analysed. The results obtained were evaluated and compared with the previous ones.

This paper aims to analyze interactive multimedia and visualization techniques for architectural theory publications. Unfortunately, the available literature about multimedia, visualization, hypertext and related systems in this area is not consistent. The paper reviews the features of a research project outcome, which investigates an iconic building of the late 1930's in Brazil. It examines the differences and similarities between a hypertext/multimedia system - a CD-ROM - with a comparable non-hypertext or non-computer product - a book - that deals with a specific subject: Architectural Theory.

Contemporary office buildings have been calling attention for intense use of glass on their faç*** way,glazed areas in such buildings may favor the access to natural light and contribute to power generation through photovoltaic ***,the application of STPV(Semi-Transparent Photovoltaic)may interfere with the building’s energy performance and good use of ***,this work aims to assess daylighting and thermoenergetic performances in an office room located in southern Brazil,with different types of STPV applied to the building’s *** study was carried out through computer simulation,integrating software’s Rhinoceros with DIVA plugin and *** have shown that the application of STPV with proper transparency percentage provides access to daylighting and increases visual comfort for occupants,and also contributes to the building’s energy balance,as it may save from 9.6%to 28%in *** use,in the climatic context analyzed,has boosted energy consumption for cooling and for artificial lighting;however,photovoltaic generation was higher and thus compensated for the increase caused by the system.

Thermal comfort can be defined as the 'condition of mind that expresses satisfaction with the thermal environment.', and adaptive control measures comprise an adjustment to indoor environmental conditions based on occupant preferences, behavior, and feedback. The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoT) in thermal comfort and adaptive control measures has the potential to significantly improve energy efficiency and occupant comfort in buildings. The adoption of the Working-from-home modality by several institutions and companies during and after the 2020 pandemic, accelerated the development of even more advanced and effective solutions in this area. This study, in its first phase, seeks to identify input parameters related to adaptive control measures adopted by the same occupants in two work environments (office building and residences) to promote personal thermal comfort contributing to the development of individual devices and IoT applications related to thermal comfort monitoring. © 2023 ITMA.

This work involves experiments using subroutines developed by the author in Fortran language to calculate heat and mass transfer, and ventilation. The simulations were done to check the results of the influence of the application of different materials on a flat roof associated to passive ventilation. The target of this paper is to evaluate the use of subroutines developed to show air temperature changes, the heat transfer through a flat roof and the ventilation on a small prototype. The experiments conducted involved predictable results and that is exactly why they were suitable to check the performance of the subroutine. It is relevant to mention that the heat transfer through a flat roof was checked including a solar gain factor, which changes during the simulation using the subroutines, according to the hour of day (hourly from 7a.m. to 5p.m). The analysis started by solving the air-circulation problem to determine the wind fields, using a mixed stabilized finite element method, like Petrov-Galerkin, applied to the full Navier-Stokes equations. The thermal problem is analyzed through the SUPG - Streamline Up-wind Petrov-Galerkin stabilized finite element method. Computational simulations allow for testing low cost operational interferences before implementing a project. © Copyright 2017 NCEUB.

The aim of this paper is to analyze volleyball practice in the beaches of Copacabana(Rio de Janeiro,Brazil)and Carcavelos and Cascais Bay(Cascais,Portugal)and to review the forms of appropriation of public space based on public policies and rules of the sport in *** methodology rests on bibliographic review and ethnographic research to map and distinguish the results in two spatial and cultural contexts that are considerably *** show that even with greater extension of Copacabana beach in comparison with Cascais,volleyball has a relevant impact in both *** installation of the necessary equipment for volleyball practice is also a form of impact in the landscape and establishment of territoriality,which is mainly activated when the game happens.

With the growth of the cities, the environment ended up being altered and, among others, the natural cover and native vegetation were replaced by a built environment, which contributed to deep environmental disturbances. One of them, climate change, has attracted attention in recent decades, and can no longer be ignored without greatly compromising the quality of life of human beings. From the scenario in which we are inserted, it became necessary to investigate which factors significantly influence climate change in urban centers. The Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro was the center of this study. From this scenario, the influence of green and wooded areas on urban thermal behavior was analyzed. In this sense, three types of soil surface exposure were studied experimentally during four periods of the year.

In the last years, architectural practice has been confronted with a paradigm shift towards the application of digital methods in design activities. In this regard, it is a pedagogic challenge to provide a suitable computational background for architectural students, to improve their ability to apply algorithmic-parametric logic, as well as fabrication and prototyping resources to design problem solving. This challenge is even stronger when considering less favored social and technological contexts, such as in Brazil, for example. In this scenario, this article presents and discusses the procedures and the results from a didactic experience carried out in a design computing-oriented discipline, inserted in the curriculum of a Brazilian architecture course. Hence, this paper shares some design computing teaching experiences and presents some results on computational methods and creative approaches, with a view to contribute to a better understanding about the relations between logical thinking, mathematics and architectural design processes.

Coloured Concrete Produced from Low-Carbon Cements: Mechanical Properties, Chromatic Stability and Sustainability

The global construction industry is responsible for 39% of CO2 emissions and for more than 50% of the extracted natural resources. Dematerialization and the use of low-carbon materials would be mitigating actions in the current scenario. In developing countries, where the housing deficit is high, a short-term solution could come from the construction of social housing using multipurpose coloured concrete casings, which have no rendering of mortars and paints and are produced from low-carbon cements. In the Amazon, the wide availability of light and kaolinite-rich waste would enable the production of low-carbon cements (LCC) from ternary mixtures of clinker, calcined kaolin waste and limestone. This study evaluated the performance of coloured concretes from these LCC against the weathering of the rainy equatorial climate of the Amazon. The LCC provided coloured concretes with good pigmentation capacity and a significant reduction in CO2 emissions. On the other hand, the use of such cement compromised the aesthetic quality of the envelope due to the low chromatic stability. The low alkalinity of the LCC favoured the growth of microorganisms, leading the concrete surfaces to become prematurely blackened, decreasing their albedo and, consequently, raising the surface temperature of the substrate, which compromises the thermos-energetic performance of the building. Nevertheless, the results are promising and justify the continuity of research using new compositions of limestone calcined clay cement associated with the use of more efficient surface protection systems. © 2022, The Authors. Study of damage distribution and intensity in regions of the facade

The ceramic coating systems applied to building facades have relevant aesthetic value and protection functions. The architectural and environmental conditions can greatly influence the degradation process of the facades, which may pose risks and compromise the durability and service life of the building and its components. The degradation process of facades changes according to the region where it takes place. To this end, the present study aims to determine damage intensity and distribution in the different regions of the facade. This study investigated the facades of three buildings that are part of the Materials Testing Laboratory (LEM) database of the Universidade de Brasilia. The degradation was quantified using a methodology proposed by Silva (2014) to generate a degradation index expressed in m². After the quantification of damages, few indexes associated with the percentage of degraded area, applied to the facade regions, are presented. These weighted indexes allowed to standardize the values observed in each region. Obtaining these indices is fundamental to the study of degradation. The results show that for a comparative analysis between the regions, the observed values should be corrected for the proportionality of the area of each region in relation to the total area of the facade. It was also noted that the continuous walls are the most affected regions, but they do not always present the highest damage intensity. © 2016, Springer International Publishing Switzerland.
