Thermal comfort can be defined as the 'condition of mind that expresses satisfaction with the thermal environment.', and adaptive control measures comprise an adjustment to indoor environmental conditions based on occupant preferences, behavior, and feedback. The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoT) in thermal comfort and adaptive control measures has the potential to significantly improve energy efficiency and occupant comfort in buildings. The adoption of the Working-from-home modality by several institutions and companies during and after the 2020 pandemic, accelerated the development of even more advanced and effective solutions in this area. This study, in its first phase, seeks to identify input parameters related to adaptive control measures adopted by the same occupants in two work environments (office building and residences) to promote personal thermal comfort contributing to the development of individual devices and IoT applications related to thermal comfort monitoring. © 2023 ITMA.

With the growth of the cities, the environment ended up being altered and, among others, the natural cover and native vegetation were replaced by a built environment, which contributed to deep environmental disturbances. One of them, climate change, has attracted attention in recent decades, and can no longer be ignored without greatly compromising the quality of life of human beings. From the scenario in which we are inserted, it became necessary to investigate which factors significantly influence climate change in urban centers. The Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro was the center of this study. From this scenario, the influence of green and wooded areas on urban thermal behavior was analyzed. In this sense, three types of soil surface exposure were studied experimentally during four periods of the year.

Coloured Concrete Produced from Low-Carbon Cements: Mechanical Properties, Chromatic Stability and Sustainability

The global construction industry is responsible for 39% of CO2 emissions and for more than 50% of the extracted natural resources. Dematerialization and the use of low-carbon materials would be mitigating actions in the current scenario. In developing countries, where the housing deficit is high, a short-term solution could come from the construction of social housing using multipurpose coloured concrete casings, which have no rendering of mortars and paints and are produced from low-carbon cements. In the Amazon, the wide availability of light and kaolinite-rich waste would enable the production of low-carbon cements (LCC) from ternary mixtures of clinker, calcined kaolin waste and limestone. This study evaluated the performance of coloured concretes from these LCC against the weathering of the rainy equatorial climate of the Amazon. The LCC provided coloured concretes with good pigmentation capacity and a significant reduction in CO2 emissions. On the other hand, the use of such cement compromised the aesthetic quality of the envelope due to the low chromatic stability. The low alkalinity of the LCC favoured the growth of microorganisms, leading the concrete surfaces to become prematurely blackened, decreasing their albedo and, consequently, raising the surface temperature of the substrate, which compromises the thermos-energetic performance of the building. Nevertheless, the results are promising and justify the continuity of research using new compositions of limestone calcined clay cement associated with the use of more efficient surface protection systems. © 2022, The Authors. Contemporary office buildings have been calling attention for intense use of glass on their faç*** way,glazed areas in such buildings may favor the access to natural light and contribute to power generation through photovoltaic ***,the application of STPV(Semi-Transparent Photovoltaic)may interfere with the building’s energy performance and good use of ***,this work aims to assess daylighting and thermoenergetic performances in an office room located in southern Brazil,with different types of STPV applied to the building’s *** study was carried out through computer simulation,integrating software’s Rhinoceros with DIVA plugin and *** have shown that the application of STPV with proper transparency percentage provides access to daylighting and increases visual comfort for occupants,and also contributes to the building’s energy balance,as it may save from 9.6%to 28%in *** use,in the climatic context analyzed,has boosted energy consumption for cooling and for artificial lighting;however,photovoltaic generation was higher and thus compensated for the increase caused by the system.

The aim of this paper is to analyze volleyball practice in the beaches of Copacabana(Rio de Janeiro,Brazil)and Carcavelos and Cascais Bay(Cascais,Portugal)and to review the forms of appropriation of public space based on public policies and rules of the sport in *** methodology rests on bibliographic review and ethnographic research to map and distinguish the results in two spatial and cultural contexts that are considerably *** show that even with greater extension of Copacabana beach in comparison with Cascais,volleyball has a relevant impact in both *** installation of the necessary equipment for volleyball practice is also a form of impact in the landscape and establishment of territoriality,which is mainly activated when the game happens.

This study investigates the dispersion of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) in soil-cement composites using different concentrations of three polycarboxylate ether superplasticizer admixtures. Physicochemical characterization of superplasticizer admixtures (SP), MWCNT suspensions, and their application in soil-cement composites was performed to identify stable and optimized MWCNT dispersions with SP concentrations. Over four weeks, analyses of hydrodynamic diameter indicated the efficacy of selected admixtures in dispersing MWCNTs compared to aqueous solutions. Ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy confirmed that the most efficient suspension maintained its stability over 60 days without significant changes in the composite's behavior. The incorporation of superplasticizer admixtures led to a reduction in zeta potential and an increase in steric stability in the MWCNT suspensions. Scanning electron microscopy illustrated MWCNTs interconnect microparticles, emphasizing the crucial role of dispersants in achieving proper dispersion. Remarkably, the superplasticizer admixture at 0.3% concentration emerged as the most effective dispersant. Raman and AFM analyses agreed that the concentration of superplasticizers directly impacts dispersion and defect density in MWCNTs. The results demonstrate the efficient dispersion of MWCNTs in soil-cement composites with the selected superplasticizer admixtures, ensuring stability and uniform distribution.

Economic growth promoted by large investment projects in the city of Seropédica and surrounding areas is not accompanied by a territorial planning that supports future growth scenarios. The challenge of the municipality is to prepare to have its territory fully transformed. This study aimed to establish quantitative data on the interferences that the growth model practiced has caused in its main watercourse called Val?o dos Bois. For this, its morphometric characteristics and physicochemical parameters of water quality were measured, and computational simulations of the self-purification processes were performed at various points, as well as the infiltration and precipitation processes, surface flow and leaching in four occupation scenarios of the urbanized areas of the basin, for rains with five different return periods.

In the last years, architectural practice has been confronted with a paradigm shift towards the application of digital methods in design activities. In this regard, it is a pedagogic challenge to provide a suitable computational background for architectural students, to improve their ability to apply algorithmic-parametric logic, as well as fabrication and prototyping resources to design problem solving. This challenge is even stronger when considering less favored social and technological contexts, such as in Brazil, for example. In this scenario, this article presents and discusses the procedures and the results from a didactic experience carried out in a design computing-oriented discipline, inserted in the curriculum of a Brazilian architecture course. Hence, this paper shares some design computing teaching experiences and presents some results on computational methods and creative approaches, with a view to contribute to a better understanding about the relations between logical thinking, mathematics and architectural design processes.

This work involves experiments using subroutines developed by the author in Fortran language to calculate heat and mass transfer, and ventilation. The simulations were done to check the results of the influence of the application of different materials on a flat roof associated to passive ventilation. The target of this paper is to evaluate the use of subroutines developed to show air temperature changes, the heat transfer through a flat roof and the ventilation on a small prototype. The experiments conducted involved predictable results and that is exactly why they were suitable to check the performance of the subroutine. It is relevant to mention that the heat transfer through a flat roof was checked including a solar gain factor, which changes during the simulation using the subroutines, according to the hour of day (hourly from 7a.m. to 5p.m). The analysis started by solving the air-circulation problem to determine the wind fields, using a mixed stabilized finite element method, like Petrov-Galerkin, applied to the full Navier-Stokes equations. The thermal problem is analyzed through the SUPG - Streamline Up-wind Petrov-Galerkin stabilized finite element method. Computational simulations allow for testing low cost operational interferences before implementing a project. © Copyright 2017 NCEUB.
