The proposal of this research is to present the development of a tool that might be useful in rehabilitation, for subjects with disability, that suffer from some kind of limbs movement limitation. This tool carries a 3D Virtual Reality Environment (VRE), which emulates the movement of a healthy person, using the immersion of the subject through an avatar. To do so, and test its feasibility, pre acquired motor imagery signals were used to test the VRE as an off-line Brain Computer Interface (BCI) feedback. The subject's brain waves were captured by an Electroencephalography (EEG) equipment. For training the classifier, 45 trials, 25 seconds long, were used, and 15 trials for its validation. Five mental tasks were tested with the BCI, and the one with the best results (imagination of the manipulation of a cube) was used to move the avatar through a virtual room.

This study aimed to identify the chemical composition of essential oil from fruits(EOAF)and the hexanic crude extract from aerial parts(At-Hex)of atemoya(Annona cherimola x Annona squamosa),a hybrid belonging to the Annonaceae *** and antimicrobial activity was also *** was obtained by hydrodistillation using a Clevenger apparatus,and their composition was analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry(GC-MS)*** was tested against human tumor cell lines HCT-116(colon carcinoma),SF-295(glioblastoma),OVCAR-8(ovarian carcinoma)and HL60(leukemia)using 3-(4,5-dimethyl-2-thiazolyl)-2,5-diphenyl-2H-tetrazolium bromide(MTT)assay,while antimicrobial activity was conducted by bioauthography method against eleven microorganisms ***-four compounds were identified in the EOAF and twenty-nine in *** monoterpenes linalool(25.70%),α-pinene(10.38%),β-pinene(9.12%),transocimene(7.43%),and the sesquiterpene bicyclogermacrene(12.58%)were the major constituents of EOAF,whereas the sesquiterpene spathulenol(13.91%)was the main compound of ***-Hex showed a high cytotoxicity against SF-295(glioblastoma).These findings show an important chemotaxonomic contribution for the Annonaceae family,mainly for the Annona *** proved to be a promising source of substances with potential cytotoxic activity.

Manifestations of cognitive and neurobehavioral disorders such as repetitive movements, impaired communication and social interaction level characterize Autism Spectrum Disorder - ASD, a condition of unknown etiology and still without cure. Currently, many researches integrate robotics to the treatment of ASD with varied functions that allow interaction with children with this disorder. Therefore, evaluation criteria become important to analyze the efficiency the use of robotics in this interaction. The methods here proposed are Goal Attainment Scaling (GAS), System Usability Scale (SUS) and Fitts' Law. The use of such methods of evaluation allows transpose qualitative assessments into quantitative, making the work more robust and reliable.

Grape processing generates residues rich in bioactive compounds with potential application in the meat ***,these substances are unstable and needs to be treated to allow their action during the processing and storage of meat *** this sense,a phenolic-rich extract from grape pomace was microencapsulated and evaluated for its potential to inhibit the oxidative process in raw and precooked beef burgers during cold *** hamburger formulations containing lyophilized extract(LEB),microencapsulated extract(MEB)and synthetic antioxidant sodium erythorbate(SEB)were prepared,pre-cooked,and evaluated for lipid and protein *** microencapsulation,with 95.0%efficiency,provided a material with a crystalline structure,rich in phenolics and with high antioxidant potential,showing 377.4±0.01,1768.1±0.07 and 1185.0±0.20μmol TEAC.100 g^(−1) for DPPH,ABTS and FRAP,*** values of malonaldehyde were found in LEB and MEB(2.9±0.3 and 1.4±0.5 mg ***^(−1),respectively)at the end of storage,with emphasis on for the hamburgers that received the microencapsulated *** behavior was observed for the analysis of carbonyl compounds,with values of 11.1±1.1,8.7±1.4 and 6.8±1.0 nM ***^(−1) in SEB,LEB and MEB,***,the freeze-dried and microencapsulated grape extracts showed superior results when compared to the synthetic antioxidant,increasing the oxidative stability of hamburgers,and avoiding significant color changes during the cold *** results indicate the high potential of the microencapsulated material to be used as a natural antioxidant in the meat industry.

Stress can affect all people, regardless of age, gender or ethnicity. The human body uses stress as an adaptive response against several situations, but it can cause physical, mental or emotional distress. In stress situation the nervous system evokes the same physiological responses, whatever the type of stress and these responses cause changes in the physical, cognitive, emotional and social performance. This paper proposes to develop a methodology for analyzing the stress level using electroencephalographic signals (EEG) based on asymmetry patterns of alpha waves. The subjects of this research are professionals from Vitoria's Fire Department. Activities of the Central Nervous System are capture using Emotiv Epoc Headset, placed on the volunteer's scalp. The signals are analyzed from the frontal cortex at positions Fp1 (AF3), Fp2 (AF4), F3 and F4, according to of the international 10-20 system. The results are analyzed together with some peripheral physiological signals, such as: heart beat rate (ECG), peripheral blood flow, skin conductance, breath rate, body temperature and change in level of salivary cortisone. In addition, a psychological assessment of voluntary's stress is performed through a questionnaire of LIPP-ISS (Inventory of Symptom Stress). A validation study is conducted through a comparison with data available in literature, as well as with evaluation conducted by a psychologist. The results are analyzed in order to get a correlation between EEG signals and physical, mental or emotional stress.

Putative chitinase II gene [ChiPut-II] was isolated from rhizosphere bacteria strain UBCR-12 [NCBI accession number KX863673]. The ChiPut-II gene encodes chitinase enzyme which has the ability as a bio fungicide. Expression of the gene could be identified in the extracellular as well as in the intracellular of the host cell. The chitinolytic ability of the ChiPut-II enzyme effectively works on 3% colloidal chitin exhibiting specific activity up to 1.235 U/μg. The inhibition capacity of the ChiPut-II enzyme extracted from intracellular against Colletotrichum gloeosporioides is 15.59%. It's chitinolytic and inhibition activity indicated the bacteria to be developed as a bio fungicide. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Sportive Communication Board: A Low Cost Strategy to Improve Communication of BC3-Paralympics Boccia Athletes

Boccia is a fun and stimulating physical active sport suitable for people with Cerebral Palsy (CP). The Boccia class three (BC3) players include those with four-limbs-motor-dysfunction with or without CP. These players can request a sport assistant that may help them physically during the game but not in their game strategy. In this work we investigated the use of a supplementary communication sportive board constructed specifically to improve the interaction of Paralympic BC3 players with their sport assistants. This case study enrolled a two - year-experience-CP-BC3 athlete with classification of gross motor function at level 5, severe four limbs dysfunction, low strength and coordination, and no verbal/oral language use but small body movements. This study was performed in a sport club during one month of training, twice a week for two-hour sessions. The sportive communication board (SCB) was designed based on Boccia rules and symbols using white and colored papers, scissors and glue. In the first two training sessions, the Paralympic athlete did not use the sportive board, whereas in the other two sessions the board was tested and the performance was compared. A set of questionnaires was applied to the legal tutor and the sport assistants before and after the SCB tests together with the analysis of the recording of a training session. According to our questionnaires data analysis, a significant contribution to the assistant understanding of the athlete game strategy was noticed by the legal tutor and the sport assistants when using the SCB. Improvement on time playing (reduction of 22%) and difficulty imposed to the opponent (increase of 33%) were the most important data detected during the tests. According to our video-records, the use of the SCB generated positive effects on the athlete overall performance, improving their communication. The identification of stress-related emotional states allows the use of a passive single-switch BCI (passive-ssBCI) together with a main multi-class BCI. Thus, the passive-ssBCI could work in the background of the main BCI, allowing it to recognize stress-related emotions and to switch to a “stress mode”, which allows a better adaptation to the user current mental state, leading the system to better success rates. Frontal cortex asymmetry gave evidence that greater right frontal activity seems to be more highly related to negative emotional states. In this work, index of asymmetry of alpha band was computed by comparing the power of contra-lateral frontal electrodes. Discrete Wavelet transformation was used to decompose the EEG signals in frequency bands. The power spectral density was then calculated using modified Hamming periodogram. Signals from a public database for the analysis of human affective states, which was labeled with volunteers self-assessment scores, were employed. In order to label negative stress-related emotional state, rules based on valence, arousal and dominance dimensional emotions were defined. The results were promissory, because computed index of asymmetry in the alpha band indicated activity into the right frontal hemisphere was higher than the left one for seven out of nine volunteers during negative emotional states. This index could be employed as switch to a “stress mode” in a passive-ssBCI.

One of the current formats of online journalism, Newsgames, uses the news as the basis for its narrative. According to the Newsgamesvault directory, the United States ranks first in the production of this type of game, with 45 artifacts published, followed by Brazil, with 19. Based on the definition of Bogost et al for the genre of documentary, we analyzed three Newsgames: A cobra vai fumar (The Snake will smoke – an idiomatic expression in Portuguese which means we do the impossible) and Back to 1964, from the magazine Superinteressante;and The Battle of Red Clay, from the newspaper Zero Hora. The genre is approximately similar to investigative reporting and documentary filmmaking, besides being based on a broad search effort. This article sets out to analyze the usability, ergonomics and gameplay of the selected games, according to studies by Nielsen and Preece and Rogers, who collaborated in improving users’ experience in the interaction with this type of game. The guidelines of Bogost et al on the three types of reality present in the documentary genre: the spatial, operational and procedural, were observed. © 2015 The Authors

Effect of Turbidity on Semi-Automatic Analysis of Copepod Size and Abundance Distribution in the Water Column

Automated image systems to characterize aquatic organisms improve research and enable fast response to environmental risk situations. In November 2015, a dam in Mariana City-MG (Brazil) collapsed and led to the disposal of mud tailings from the mining process to the Doce River. The accident resulted in several casualties and incalculable damage to surrounding communities and the environment. The mud increased water turbidity, an essential condition to the functioning of the image analysis systems, and directly affected the characterization of the organisms, making it impossible to distinguish copepods in the mud, due to the blurred outline. To get a quick response evaluating environmental situations, this work aimed to develop and test different algorithms characterizing and classifying copepods by their size (length and area) using in situ images acquired by the Lightframe On-Sight Keyspecies Investigation device. Field tests were carried out under different turbidity levels throughout the gradient observed in the coastal zone adjacent to the Doce River. The best algorithm reduced nearly 50% of the noise in some images when compared with manual treatment and led to 96% accuracy in measurement and counting. Semi-automated devices that perform post-processing corrections are suitable for fast environmental evaluation under high turbidity scenarios.
