Within the scope of industry 5.0, mixed reality (MR) is an eminent technology for problem solving and process optimization. The present research aimed to assess how users perceive an augmented reality (AR) application for diagnosis and intervention on industrial equipment. 18 participants with 3 different professional and technological backgrounds (general users (GU), information technology users (SD) and human centered design experts (HF)) took part in this study. Generally, the developed system was valued as slightly positive and some improvement points were identified. The results also revealed differences in the perceived User Experience (UX) between different user profiles. Also, there are important differences in perception depending on the person's analysis experience, with less rigor for new users and higher rigor for people who work with human factors, for example. This reinforce the concept of user centered design and the importance to understand the human being in its relation with the novel user interface and tendency to new technologies. © 2024, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

EXtended Reality (XR) has numerous applications in industrial contexts, including to assist in activities such as preventive maintenance and/or reactive interventions in machinery, wherein time-effectiveness is required to mitigate the costs of inactive production lines or the need to subcontract specialized technicians to perform those operations. However, developing an Augmented Reality (AR) application capable of being user-friendly and truly serviceable for aiding in the referred context requires keeping in mind human factors as key aspects and, as such, interaction must be a concern to address, namely, considering user feedback. Therefore, starting from a previous AR system oriented to industrial interventions that was developed and assessed with users and considering the feedback of the participant, the duly alterations were done and a new test was conducted, with a total of 27 participants, divided into 2 groups: 11 users who participated in the first experience and 16 general users who had never contacted with the solution before. A qualitative improvement in the user experience was noticed from the questionnaires feedback. Points such as fluidity, responsiveness, ease, speed, and intuitiveness were highlighted. This study investigates the dispersion of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) in soil-cement composites using different concentrations of three polycarboxylate ether superplasticizer admixtures. Physicochemical characterization of superplasticizer admixtures (SP), MWCNT suspensions, and their application in soil-cement composites was performed to identify stable and optimized MWCNT dispersions with SP concentrations. Over four weeks, analyses of hydrodynamic diameter indicated the efficacy of selected admixtures in dispersing MWCNTs compared to aqueous solutions. Ultraviolet–visible (UV–vis) spectroscopy confirmed that the most efficient suspension maintained its stability over 60 days without significant changes in the composite's behavior. The incorporation of superplasticizer admixtures led to a reduction in zeta potential and an increase in steric stability in the MWCNT suspensions. Scanning electron microscopy illustrated MWCNTs interconnect microparticles, emphasizing the crucial role of dispersants in achieving proper dispersion. Remarkably, the superplasticizer admixture at 0.3 % concentration emerged as the most effective dispersant. Raman and AFM analyses agreed that the concentration of superplasticizers directly impacts dispersion and defect density in MWCNTs. The results demonstrate the efficient dispersion of MWCNTs in soil-cement composites with the selected superplasticizer admixtures, ensuring stability and uniform distribution.

Fantasy sports games exist for over 50 years and are popular in North America and in European countries. In Brazil, the sports fans only recently took interest in those games with Cartola FC, an online fantasy soccer game. This study aims to investigate the Brazilian players’ behavior and consumption in Cartola FC through a qualitative approach. Semi-structured interviews were conducted and the discussion was supported by Game Studies and consumer behavior theoretical approaches. The results pointed to the game boundaries’ permeability, where the actions performed by the players occur mainly outside of it. Although Cartola FC is an online game, the social ties with local friends and work colleagues are reinforced and, as in previous researches carried on in other countries, the act of playing deepened the players’ relationship with the sport. It was also found an expressive informal market of League betting, created to transgress the Brazilian legislation. © 2019 Authors & Digital Games Research Association DiGRA.

Growing population, rapid urbanization, and increasing travel demand emphasize the need for reliable public transportation systems and sustainable transportation planning. A reliable bus service fosters a more significant, satisfied, and committed base of users. This research focuses on examining the association between on-time performance (OTP) and road network, demographic, socioeconomic, and land use characteristics to identify relevant external factors for proactive and reliable public transportation system planning. The analysis was conducted at a bus stop level. Bus arrival/departure data from the Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) was obtained. The road network, demographic, socioeconomic, and land use characteristics were captured within 0.25-mile and 0.50-mile buffers. Pearson correlation analysis was conducted to understand the association between OTP and road network, demographic, socioeconomic, and land use characteristics by day of the week and time of the day. The results show that OTP is associated with external factors such as the number of signalized or cul-de-sac/dead-end intersections, number of lanes, network density, population, income (median and total), and land use types related to residential and commercial/employment purposes within the bus stop vicinity. The findings provide vital insights for transit agencies to enhance scheduling, service and maximize benefits, effectively utilize available resources, plan, and provide equitable services to all riders. © 2023 The Author(s)

This paper is an investigation about an Electromagnetic Compatibility test called Radiated Immunity. The goal of such test is to check if a device under test, e.g. electronic equipment, is sufficiently immune to electromagnetic noise coming from both intentional and non-intentional sources. Depending on the interference source, the field waveform might be complex, given the modern modulation and multiple access techniques. Radiated Immunity standards, however, cover only a few simple modulation schemes and test severity levels that might differ from the real field intensities. In this work, the impact of such differences in the 210-216 MHz frequency range is studied, with the use of the statistical technique Friedman Test. Experimental and computational results indicate that this difference is not negligible. © 2017 IEEE.

This work involves experiments using subroutines developed by the author in Fortran language to calculate heat and mass transfer, and ventilation. The simulations were done to check the results of the influence of the application of different materials on a flat roof associated to passive ventilation. The target of this paper is to evaluate the use of subroutines developed to show air temperature changes, the heat transfer through a flat roof and the ventilation on a small prototype. The experiments conducted involved predictable results and that is exactly why they were suitable to check the performance of the subroutine. It is relevant to mention that the heat transfer through a flat roof was checked including a solar gain factor, which changes during the simulation using the subroutines, according to the hour of day (hourly from 7a.m. to 5p.m). The analysis started by solving the air-circulation problem to determine the wind fields, using a mixed stabilized finite element method, like Petrov-Galerkin, applied to the full Navier-Stokes equations. The thermal problem is analyzed through the SUPG - Streamline Up-wind Petrov-Galerkin stabilized finite element method. Computational simulations allow for testing low cost operational interferences before implementing a project. © Copyright 2017 NCEUB.

The Body Appreciation Scale-2 (BAS-2) is a widely used measure of a core facet of the positive body image construct. However, extant research concerning measurement invariance of the BAS-2 across a large number of nations remains limited. Here, we utilised the Body Image in Nature (BINS) dataset - with data collected between 2020 and 2022 - to assess measurement invariance of the BAS-2 across 65 nations, 40 languages, gender identities, and age groups. Multi-group confirmatory factor analysis indicated that full scalar invariance was upheld across all nations, languages, gender identities, and age groups, suggesting that the unidimensional BAS-2 model has widespread applicability. There were large differences across nations and languages in latent body appreciation, while differences across gender identities and age groups were negligible-to-small. Additionally, greater body appreciation was significantly associated with higher life satisfaction, being single (versus being married or in a committed relationship), and greater rurality (versus urbanicity). Across a subset of nations where nation-level data were available, greater body appreciation was also significantly associated with greater cultural distance from the United States and greater relative income inequality. These findings suggest that the BAS-2 likely captures a near-universal conceptualisation of the body appreciation construct, which should facilitate further cross-cultural research.

One of the current formats of online journalism, Newsgames, uses the news as the basis for its narrative. According to the Newsgamesvault directory, the United States ranks first in the production of this type of game, with 45 artifacts published, followed by Brazil, with 19. Based on the definition of Bogost et al for the genre of documentary, we analyzed three Newsgames: A cobra vai fumar (The Snake will smoke – an idiomatic expression in Portuguese which means we do the impossible) and Back to 1964, from the magazine Superinteressante;and The Battle of Red Clay, from the newspaper Zero Hora. The genre is approximately similar to investigative reporting and documentary filmmaking, besides being based on a broad search effort. This article sets out to analyze the usability, ergonomics and gameplay of the selected games, according to studies by Nielsen and Preece and Rogers, who collaborated in improving users’ experience in the interaction with this type of game. The guidelines of Bogost et al on the three types of reality present in the documentary genre: the spatial, operational and procedural, were observed. © 2015 The Authors

Towards a Robotic Knee Exoskeleton Control Based on Human Motion Intention through EEG and sEMGsignals

The integration of lower limb exoskeletons with robotic walkers allows obtaining a system to improve mobility and security during gait rehabilitation. In this work, the evaluation of human motion intention (HMI) based on electroencephalogram (EEG) and surface electromyography (sEMG) signals are analyzed for a knee exoskeleton control as a preliminary study for gait neuro-rehabilitation with a hybrid robotic system. This system consists of the knee exoskeleton H2 and the UFES's Smart Walker, which are used to restore the neuromotor control function of subjects with neural injuries. An experimental protocol was developed to identify patterns to control the exoskeleton in accordance with the HMI-based on EEG/sEMG. The EEG and sEMG signals are recorded during the following activities: stand-up/sit-down and knee flexion/extension. HMI is analyzed through both event-related desynchronization/synchronization (ERD/ERS) and slow cortical potential, as well as the myoelectric pattern classification related to lower limb. The feature extraction from sEMG signals is based on vector combinations in time and frequency domain which are used for a pattern classification stage trough an artificial neural network with Levenberg Marquadt training algorithm and support vector machine. Preliminary results shown that a combination of EEG/sEMG signals can be used to define a control strategy for the robotic system. © 2015 The Authors
