An active orthosis （AO） is a robotic device that assists both human gait and rehabilitation therapy. This work proposes portable AOs, one for the knee joint and another for the ankle joint. Both AOs will be used to complete a robotic system that improves gait rehabilitation. The requirements for actuator selection, the biomechanical considerations during the AO design, the finite element method, and a control approach based on electroencepha-lographic and surface electromyographic signals are reviewed. This work contributes to the design of AOs for users with foot drop and knee flexion impairment. However, the potential of the proposed AOs to be part of a robotic gait rehabilitation system that improves the quality of life of stroke survivors requires further investigation.

Background: The literature indicates that chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) affects cardiac autonomic control. In this study, we conducted a literature review in order to investigate the heart rate variability (HRV) in COPD subjects. Methods: A search was performed in Medline database, using the link between the keywords: "autonomic nervous system", "cardiovascular system", "COPD" and "heart rate variability". Results: The search resulted in a total of 40 references. Amongst these references, the first exclusion resulted in the barring of 29 titles and abstracts, which were not clearly related to the purpose of review. This resulted in a total of 11 articles that were then read and utilized in the review. The selected studies indicated that there is significant reduction of HRV in patients with COPD, characterized by reduction of indices that assess parasympathetic activity in addition to dealing with the global autonomic modulation. We also established that supervised exercise can reduce these harmful effects in COPD patients. Also, it was reported that the use of non-invasive ventilation in these patients may contribute to the improvement of respiratory symptoms, with no impairing, and may even induce positive responses in cardiac autonomic regulation. Conclusion: The studies indicate a need for further investigations to guide future therapies to improve the treatment of cardiovascular system in the respiratory diseases. © 2014 Roque et al.;licensee BioMed Central Ltd.

This article makes a brief foray into state-of-the-art in Virtual Reality technologies and into semiotic studies in the field of Human-Computer Interaction in order to invite the reader to think about human's current situation. From this perspective, we shall seek to raise new questions about the forms of communication and interaction mediated by digital technologies. These forms deal with the fact of fiction and non-fiction going hand-in-hand, taking shape in images which, and in virtual beings who, co-inhabit both our imagination and the scenarios which comprise the parallel worlds of virtual environments. This thinking is indispensable for us to understand, for example, the implications of these changes on children and young people development and how we conceive education in today's world. Therefore, this article is based on: 1) studies that led to the dissertation entitled Digital Self: exploring the "I" construction on the Internet, submitted to the post graduate program in Cognitive Psychology at the Federal University of Pernambuco, 2) discussions kindled at the Laboratory of Interactional Analysis and Videography, which is linked to the post graduate program in Cognitive Psychology, and 3) discussions and projects developed in partnership between the Center for Informatics, Department of design and Human Factors Researchers at Federal University of Pernambuco. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

This paper sets out the case for the importance of using virtual reality immersion for diagnostic analysis and rehabilitating people with disabilities. To do so, a review of the literature was undertaken by examining articles published between 2000 and 2012. The results show that browsing in virtual immersion environments simulates real-world situations, with the advantage that this enables there to be full control over the variables analyzed and consequently over the health aspects involved. Furthermore, when using multisensory channels, the human-task-system interface tools enable there to be simultaneous treatment of multiple morbidities, which characterizes there having been an important advance made in the functional independence of people with disabilities. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

By using artistic mutations, called Doodles, Google has been commemorating important events and personalities. This fun approach started with still images, evolved to increasingly complex interactions, and has resulted in games based on the configurations of its logo. Thus, the company which was born in the digital world has introduced a new interactive approach to its logo in cyberspace, thus offering new experiences to the user. This article sets out to present a comparative analysis of usability and playability of five interactive Doodles by applying the RITE (Rapid Interation Testing and Evaluation) approach so as to investigate ergonomic criteria of invitation, suitability immediate feedback and user control. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Obesity is increasing alarmingly worldwide, especially in children's audience, due to the adoption of sedentary habits. The exergames are a new class of digital games that have arisen over the possible use of technology, low cost, to unite physical activity to video games such as Nintendo Wii, X-Box 360, among others. And these have been gaining ground due to immersion of users, working their cognitive skills, attention and memory. This study presents a new game, the PEGGO developed by Federal University of Pernambuco, with data supporting the use for this type of game in order to contribute to help control childhood obesity. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

This paper presents the application of a cooperative evaluation, technical evaluation performed ergonomic usability with users in the Learning Management Systens (LMS) used at the Instituto Federal de Pernambuco (IFPE). The data collected in the assessments were analyzed with users from Nielsen usability heuristics. The results showed that the environment has evaluated a large number of usability problems. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

This paper aims to analyze interactive multimedia and visualization techniques for architectural theory publications. Unfortunately, the available literature about multimedia, visualization, hypertext and related systems in this area is not consistent. The paper reviews the features of a research project outcome, which investigates an iconic building of the late 1930's in Brazil. It examines the differences and similarities between a hypertext/multimedia system - a CD-ROM - with a comparable non-hypertext or non-computer product - a book - that deals with a specific subject: Architectural Theory.

Thermoacoustic cooling for surface combatants

Currently he is the program manager for the TRITON Thermoacoustic Program and heads ARL Penn State's surface ship application effort in transferring new technology into the surface ship fleet. Over the last 15 years at ARL Penn State he served as program manager for marine composite applications programs as well as various ATD torpedo programs including the ADCAP upgrade. He spent 16 years working for the Navy where he served as Ship Design Manager for the MSH and Deputy Ship Design Manager for the DDG 51 class among other earlier duties. Mr. Johnson is a member of SNAME ASNE Tau Beta Pi the Association Scientists and Engineers (ASE) and recipient of the Navy's Meritorious Civilian Service Award. Steven Garrett:received his Ph.D. in physics from the University of California at Los Angeles in 1977 followed by the Hunt Postdoctoral Fellowship of the Acoustical Society of America at University of Sussex in England and a Miller Postdoctoral Fellowship in the Physics Department at UC Berkeley. During that time his research centered on acoustical measurements of super fluid hydrodynamics. Dr. Garrett joined the faculty of the Naval Postgraduate School in 1982 where his research efforts were concentrated on the development of fiber-optic sensors systems automated in situ sonar transducer monitoring systems and thermoacoustic refrigeration. He left NPS in 1995 to assume his current position as the United Technologies Corporation Professor of Acoustics in the graduate program in acoustics and as senior scientist at the Applied Research Laboratory at Penn State. Prof. Garrett is a Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America and recipient of their Silver Medal in Interdisciplinary Acoustics. Robert Keolian:received his Ph.D. in physics from the University of Califo

Thermoacoustic cooling technology uses high amplitude acoustic standing waves in inert gasses to pump heat It requires no toxic, ozone-depleting, or global warming gasses and has few or no moving Parts, no sliding seals and requires no lubrication for robust and very low maintenance operation. Thermoacoustic cooling units have been demonstrated aboard the Space Shuttle in 1992 and aboard the USS Deyo (DD 989) in 1,995 to cool radar electronics. Currently, a 3-ton electrically driven unit is being built for shipboard application. This 3-ton unit will enable the ship designer to provide greater combat system survivability through distributed system architecture and reduced manning by unit simplicity and resulting high reliability. Additionally, waste heat cooling is an emerging thermoacoustic technology that could utilize stack gas heat from main gas turbine engines or from gas turbines generators to create shipboard cooling. The benefits of this waste heat cooling is lower infrared (IR) signature and reduced fuel consumption.
