This paper is about modeling and control of a XY positioning table. It is described the construction and instrumentation of a double axis positioning system. It is developed a general electromechanical model, followed by the identification of simplified models for control purposes. Despite the multiple failure modes associated to bolted steel joints the block shear failure is frequently the controlling limit state of gusset plates, tension members and coped beam joints. The block shear rupture is characterised by a condition where a steel block area, nearby the holes of bolted joint region, reaches its maximum capacity dictated by a tension to shear interaction. If the joint is loaded beyond this limit a steel block is eventually separated from the main structure. Many models have been proposed to avoid shear block failure in steel design. These models incorporate a combination of the various hypotheses that control the structural rupture. In the majority of cases, it involves a combination of rupture and yielding in the tension and shear planes of the designed joint. Various design formula for this structural engineering problem were proposed all over the years but a closed solution has not yet been reached, due to the influence of several independent parameters. Many studies have already been carried out with the available experimental data, however, non negligible errors are still present in the current design formulae. The main objective of the present paper is to present a back propagation neural network evaluation of the block shear phenomenon. The main neural network input parameters were the geometrical and material variables that control the block shear design. The neural network output parameter was the block shear capacity. The neural network training was based on experimental results present in literature and adopted cross validation techniques to avoid the neural network overfitting. The neural network results were promising, with reduced associated errors and confirmed the possibility of using this methodology to generate trustworthy data. These new data, coupled with the existent experiments, can help the production of more accurate design formulae. © Civil-Comp Press, 2007.

In industrial systems' simulated environments the assimilation of technical procedures by the operators under training is enhanced by reproducing similar to real situations experienced in the workplace. The experience and learning acquired in simulators is directly related to the quality and realism of the proposed training scenarios. On the other hand, the experience acquired is even more conducive to good working practices when it involves situations known to lead into errors. Often training scenarios are dependent on the tutor's experience and the knowledge of operator difficulties in the work environment. This paper proposes a systematic approach for building training scenarios to be simulated, based on the analysis and reproduction of situations described in the working environment error reports. This approach is based on the instantiation of ontologies built for both domains, covering the knowledge on both the error situations and operator training scenarios. This study is focused in the domain of electric power systems operation.

This paper presents a proposal of Brain Computer Interface (BCI) to command an autonomous car. This BCI is based on the paradigm of visual evoked potentials (VEP) and event-related desynchronization (ERD). A menu interface is presented to the user with disabilities in order he/she can choose a destination for the autonomous car. The selection of the final destination is performed using visual stimuli flickering at different frequencies, analyzed through the analysis of brain signals present at the occipital region of the user's scalp. The power spectrum of these signals is then obtained, in order to get the frequency of the visual stimulation. Preliminary tests were performed with healthy users and people with disabilities, which reached an average success rate above 90%. The proposed system is also capable of turning on/off the stimuli, thus reducing the fatigue associated with particular visual stimuli.

Manifestations of cognitive and neurobehavioral disorders such as repetitive movements, impaired communication and social interaction level characterize Autism Spectrum Disorder - ASD, a condition of unknown etiology and still without cure. Currently, many researches integrate robotics to the treatment of ASD with varied functions that allow interaction with children with this disorder. Therefore, evaluation criteria become important to analyze the efficiency the use of robotics in this interaction. The methods here proposed are Goal Attainment Scaling (GAS), System Usability Scale (SUS) and Fitts' Law. The use of such methods of evaluation allows transpose qualitative assessments into quantitative, making the work more robust and reliable.

This paper presents a method to determine hysteresis parameters of an inductor's core with a closed magnetic circuit based on electric current and voltage curves of a damped LC circuit. The proposed procedure makes use of the concept of hysteresis modeling by separating the magnetic field into four components, which can be linearized in terms of its parameters. Thus, curves can be adjusted with a stochastic method in order to match experimental ones, allowing for determination of hysteresis parameters. © 2016 IEEE.

A study on the length and type of the window function used in the Short-Time Fourier Transform (STFT), along with its suitability to extract the harmonic content from a High Impedance Fault (HIF) current is presented on this paper. Additionally, a method to detect HIF based on the phase angle of the third harmonic current is developed. The proposed algorithm performance is evaluated by two database: one containing HIF simulated signals and other containing actual HIF oscillographic records. This paper presents the current state of this research, and, so far, the method is able to detect HIF occurring in different types of surfaces (wet and dry), as well as it is insusceptible to typical noises present in the real oscillograms. © 2016 IEEE.

The selection of features is generally the most difficult field to model in BCIs. Therefore, time and effort are invested in individual feature selection prior to data set training. Another great difficulty regarding the model of the BCI topology is the brain signal variability between users. How should this topology be in order to implement a system that can be used by large number of users with an optimal set of features? The proposal presented in this paper allows for obtaining feature reduction and classifier selection based on software agents. The software agents contain Genetic Algorithms (GA) and a cost function. GA used entropy and mutual information to choose the number of features. For the classifier selection a cost function was defined. Success rate and Cohen's Kappa coefficient are used as parameters to evaluate the classifiers performance. The obtained results allow finding a topology represented as a neural model for an adaptive BCI, where the number of the channels, features and the classifier are interrelated. The minimal subset of features and the optimal classifier were obtained with the adaptive BCI. Only three EEG channels were needed to obtain a success rate of 93% for the BCI competition III data set IVa.

Static resistance measurement of circuit breakers has been a crucial technique to assess the state of contacts, supporting maintenance procedures. However, in many cases, the obtained results do not provide accurate data for correct diagnosis, since the test examines only the main contact. This article discusses the application of the contact dynamic resistance measurement (DRM) in the evaluation of main and arcing contacts. The DRM is a contact resistance test, and the resistance is determined during the opening of contacts, analyzing the main and arcing contacts. The research objective is to get the DRM parameters that can assist in the contacts diagnosis. The obtained results indicate that DRM has presented more qualitative parameters than the static resistance test in the evaluation of contacts. The resistance tests were performed applying a direct current with 300 A of amplitude. © 2014 IEEE.
