This paper presents a test platform with cantilever beam that uses a SMA (Shape Memory Alloy) as actuator and strain gauges as sensors to study of the beam deformation. From the data acquired by means of heating and cooling proceßes, the engineering students can observe the hysteresis behavior of the SMA wire. Besides, the study of this platform provide to the students can put in practice their knowledge about data acquisition, system identification, modeling and programming based on computer supported education.

This paper proposes two seven level asymmetric inverter with coupled inductors that enable a reduction in the number of controlled switching devices. However, the lack of redundant states and difference in the maximum pole voltages reduce the performance of the inverters due to higher winding currents and saturation of magnetic core. For mitigating those issues, a coupled inductor with elevated magnetizing inductance is used. The operation principle, conducting states and modulation strategy are described. Simulation and experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of proposed topology. © 2015 IEEE.

Classification of voltage disturbances in power systems is essential for modern society and can be very demanding according to the used method or the aimed accuracy. This paper presents a new intelligent approach aimed to automatically analyse power quality disturbances including sag, swell, outage, harmonics and normal waveform. The approach is based on Artificial Immune System and focuses on the application of a Clonal Selection Algorithm to extract features from disturbance waveforms and classify the disturbances in each 0.5 cycle of the fundamental frequency. Other important feature of the proposed approach is that it can be embedded since the resulted on-line classification tool achieves very low computational complexity. Comparisons and experimental results obtained from the application of the proposed method validate the approach and achieved a classification accuracy at least better than previous work. © 2015 IEEE.

This paper is about a data-driven frequency domain PID retuning from the initial controller parameters. It uses data collected from a specific closed-loop experiment to estimate frequency response points. The data-driven retuning method is applied to make a process matches with the defined reference model using a convex optimization technique that minimizes modified cost function. The proposed strategy is demonstrated in laboratory scale thermal plant based on Peltier effect, using crossover and critical frequencies estimations. © 2018 IEEE.

This paper introduces a new breed of four-wire (4W) multilevel shunt compensator to deal with either harmonic or reactive power compensation. The converter configurations are generalized for K-stages and the main benefits of proposed topologies lie on i) multilevel waveforms generation, ii) single dc-link unit and iii) modular characteristic. The configurations are based on cascaded transformers along with three-phase-bridge (TPB) converters. These converters are directly connected to the transformer primary side. A suitable PWM strategy combined with an appropriate transformer turns ratio guarantees the desirable multilevel output waveforms. The modularity feature provides simple maintenance and makes the proposed shunt active power filters (SAPFs) an attractive solution in comparison with conventional configurations. The configuration model and overall control are addressed, as well. Simulation and experimental results are presented for theoretical validation. © 2017 IEEE.

This paper presents two power generation systems with a two-phase permanent magnet (PM) synchronous machine associated to a rectifier with small number of controlled switches. The topologies have as main purpose converting wind energy into electrical energy for low power applications, providing a great potential to be used in urban areas. They can be used in applications connected to the grid or in the stand-alone mode or feeding a micro grid. Compared with two three-phase generation systems that use reduced number of controlled switches, the proposed topologies permit obtaining sinusoidal machine currents, with low harmonic distortion, using a smaller number of controlled switches. Simulation and experimental results also are presented. © 2015 IEEE.

This paper shows the building of an embedded Asterisk platform as a key technique for providing Information Technology classes with an extra laboratorial environment for learning Voice over Internet Protocol. Besides building the platform, the students are asked to mount a functional telephony system with it that meets the criteria of low cost, low building complexity and high adaptability to convergent networks. The Raspberry PI version B was the board used to provide portability for the students to work outside the laboratory environment. Asterisk was presented as a useful tool on which the students could create a flexible system that could be easily deployed on convergent networks. This work was developed in the Telephony subject for the electrical engineering and the Telecommunications Systems undergraduate courses from the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of Paraíba - IFPB, and presented good results in the students' learning achievements.

This paper proposes ten alternative drive topologies with reduced number of controlled switches. The topologies are composed by three-level (3L) and two-level (2L) legs combinations. All of them aim to feed a three-phase machine based on the concept of open-end-winding (OEW). Conventional OEW configurations are considered for comparison purposes. The proposed topologies are named accordingly to the number of levels associated in each leg. For example, a topology with one 3L leg and five 2L legs is named 322-222. The other configurations are named in a similar manner. The OEW based systems using proposed configurations aim to give intermediate alternative solution in terms of cost-benefit rather than using conventional configurations. Some simulation and experimental results are presented in order to validate the theoretical approaches.

In this paper, a six-phase machine drive system fed by a nine-leg converter is proposed. The drive system is composed of a three three-leg inverters feeding a six-phase induction motor, which is adequate to develop a high power system with voltage rating restrictions. The studied system is compared to the conventional solution and it is demonstrated that the nine-leg converter permits to reduce the harmonic distortion of the machine currents and to decrease the power processed by converter switches. The system model and the PWM strategy are presented. Experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed system.

This paper presents two machine drive system based on a six-phase machine (SPM) and three-leg converters. The machine is composed of two three-phase groups. For the first configuration, one of the groups is connected to a three-leg converter and the other is connected to other two three-leg converters in an open-end winding configuration (see Fig. 4). For the second configuration, one of the groups is connected to a three-leg converter (similar to first one) and the other group is connected to a three-level NPC converter (see Fig. 5). Since the machine two groups are fed differently, the system topology is considered to be hybrid. The purpose of these topologies is to be an alternative configuration, being midway between the conventional six-leg inverter system (see Fig. 1) and the NPC six-leg inverter system (see Fig. 2) and Conventional twelve-leg Open-end inverter system (see Fig. 3). Compared with the conventional six-leg system, the proposed systems permits reducing the power processed by the semiconductor switches and their ratings, the dc-link voltage and the harmonic distortion. On the other hand, the proposed systems constitute less complex alternatives, compared with the open-end and NPC counterparts (see Fig. 3). PWM and control strategies are discussed. Simulation and experimental results are also presented. © 2014 IEEE.
