This paper proposed two universal active power filter (UAPF) topologies for reactive power and harmonic compensation. The proposed system is a combination of series and shunt active power filters. They are suitable to improve the harmonic distortion in the grid currents and a voltage compensation. The filters are composed of three three-phase converters resulting in nine legs. The first (configuration I) can operate with floating dc-link capacitor or an auxiliary DC source on the series filter and the second one (configuration II) uses a combination of two series filters and one shunt filter sharing a single dc-link. The complete control system, including the PWM techniques, is developed and a comparison between the configurations is done. Simulation and experimental results are shown for validation purposes.

Ferromagnetic materials have magnetic properties which determine its magnetic field conductivity characteristics. Such characteristics are extremely important for the proper selection and use of these materials in measurement processes, for example. Therefore, this paper presents an equipment for the characterization of ferromagnetic materials constructed in a laboratory. The experimental results of this equipment are acquired and compared with the experimental results obtained with an industrially manufactured apparatus called hysteresisgraph, designed to provide magnetic characterization of magnetic materials. The results of the comparison demonstrate that the equipment presented has low relative error and can be applied in academic projects which require magnetic characterization of ferromagnetic materials developed in the laboratory.

Congestion control algorithms exist for decades to prevent package loss in intense traffic networks. Several solutions developed over the years tried to solve this problem, including the creation of new algorithms. However, hybrid wired and wireless networks, or wired-cum-wireless, common in modern days, bring new challenges to programmers and engineers who try to overcome the numerous new problems that this kind of network presents. This work carries out a performance comparison, in a wired-cum-wireless network, using TCP congestion control algorithms variants: New Reno and CUBIC. The comparison is to determine which of those algorithms performs better in several situations, like multiple disconnections caused by mobility, interference and congested links. The results showed that the CUBIC is a more stable and fair algorithm, but it has a significantly less data flow than New Reno.

Classification of voltage disturbances in power systems is essential for modern society and can be very demanding according to the used method or the aimed accuracy. This paper presents a new intelligent approach aimed to automatically analyse power quality disturbances including sag, swell, outage, harmonics and normal waveform. The approach is based on Artificial Immune System and focuses on the application of a Clonal Selection Algorithm to extract features from disturbance waveforms and classify the disturbances in each 0.5 cycle of the fundamental frequency. Other important feature of the proposed approach is that it can be embedded since the resulted on-line classification tool achieves very low computational complexity. Comparisons and experimental results obtained from the application of the proposed method validate the approach and achieved a classification accuracy at least better than previous work.

This paper proposes a hybrid multilevel topology for Open-End stator Winding (OEW) induction motor drive based on Modular Multilevel Cascade Inverter (MMCI) with Double-Star Chopper-Cells (DSCC) and 2-Level Voltage Source Inverter (2L-VSI). An efficient Voltage Reference Technique is proposed to generate the pole voltages of both inverters. As a result, the DSCC inverter is commanded in high-switching frequency, while the 2L-VSI operates at the fundamental frequency. A voltage-balancing control of the floating DC capacitors of the DSCC is presented to ensure the energy balance. At last, to investigate the proposed system and control strategy, experimental results are presented.

Spectrum scarcity and the inefficient use of the electromagnetic spectrum motivated the development of Cognitive Radio (CR), which aims to extend the spectral efficiency, with opportunistic access to the available frequency bands. Energy Detection (ED) is the most adopted spectrum sensing technique for cognitive radio applications due to its simplicity. However, fading effects are usually simplified or discarded when evaluating the energy detector performance in spectrum sensing. This paper presents the performance evaluation of cognitive spectrum sensing, based on energy detector, for fading channels. The objective is to analyze how the use of various fading models affect the spectral detection in cognitive networks. Rayleigh, Rice, Nakagami-m and Lognormal fading channels are considered, and the results favor the use of ED when the channel is subject to Lognormal fading.

This paper presents a framework to support the development of three-dimensional virtual scenarios for an operator training simulator for electrical systems. Given the need to represent a variety of scenarios of interest, this can be an effort and time consuming task. The proposed framework promotes a systematic approach when building scenarios and is supported by tools from the ontology-based domain. An editing tool is also under construction. As it will be discussed in the paper, this approach resulted in the simplification of the scenario building process which is achieved by interchanging descriptions at different levels of abstraction. The descriptions concern the situation to be represented;plant objects' representation, both visual and behavioural, the latter represented as Coloured Petri Nets (CPN) models. © 2014 SciTePress. Thermoelectric (TE) modules are solid-state devices that convert directly thermal energy in electrical energy. However, they can undergo performance degradation due to thermal cycling. In the present study, a control-based test platform that is capable to apply specific thermal cycling pattern at periodic intervals is presented in order to evaluate performance degradation that influence the TE module lifetime. Using this test platform, some parameters and the figure of merit ZT of a commercial TE module are measured before and after thermal cycling application. An important feature of the proposed platform is that the applied thermal cycling is bipolar, that is, it is possible to apply positive or negative temperature difference and, through this, performance degradation would be observed after only 548 thermal cycles much lower than previous works.

Cognitive Radio (CR) is extending the applications of wireless communications worldwide. Cognitive radio verifies the electromagnetic spectrum availability and permits the modification of the transmission parameters using the interaction with the environment. The goal is to opportunistically occupy spectral bands with minimum interference to other users or applications. Cognitive radio for Vehicular Ad hoc Networks (CRVs or CR-VANETs) is a new trend in the automotive market. Recent and future vehicles will offer functionalities for the transmission of intra-vehicular commands and dynamic access to wireless services, while the car is in transit. This paper describes the cognitive radio technology and its signal processing perspectives for the automotive market.

This paper presents two energy conversion systems with two-phase permanent magnet (PM) machine and a rectifier with reduced number of controlled switches. The topologies are conceived with the purpose of converting wind energy into electrical energy (i.e., a wind energy conversion system (WECS)) for low power applications. Compared with some three-phase generation systems with reduced number of controlled switches, the proposed topologies permit obtaining sinusoidal controlled machine currents, reducing dc-link voltage and dq currents low harmonic distortion. © 2014 IEEE.
