This article presents considerations and results of practical tests on the use of insulating polyamide monofilament line as the likely replacement for the traditional non-insulating multifilament ropes, employed in online interventions. The use of insulating polyamide monofilament line decreases the necessary time in online interventions, since some safety distances can be reduced. Furthermore, its cost is less than UD 0.08 per meter. The line samples were firstly mechanically aged, providing five different degrees of degradation. electrical tests were performed in all samples, under three conditions: clean, moistened with tap water and moistened with saline water. A traditional insulating hot stick was taken as reference, due to its reliability and long term use in online interventions. The results are promising and indicate a desirable scenario, since the use of such line reduces time and effort, and also increases the process safety. © 2015 IEEE.

Cognitive radio is a viable technology for the next generation of wireless communications. The ability to sense the electromagnetic spectrum and to enable vacant bands to other users has been investigated in the past years. One important issue is the use of an efficient spectrum sensing algorithm to monitor the frequency band occupancy. Usually, the effects of fading are overseen in the analysis of those algorithms. This paper aims to evaluate the performance of a spectrum sensing algorithm based on Jarque-Bera test. Rayleigh fading is considered in this paper. Preliminary simulation results are provided, to demonstrate the potential of the proposed strategy.

This paper shows the use of PBL (Problem-Based Learning) technique as a key to learning VoIP in courses like electrical engineering and Computer Networks in conjunction with open source and the public domain software called Asterisk which was used to create the scenario of the experiment and the problems presented to the students. In order to make the validation, the experiment was applied to students of Bachelor in electrical engineering and in Communication Technology System, undergraduate courses at the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of Paraíba - IFPB, in the Telephony subject, with promising results. The Asterisk software was presented as a useful and flexible tool for constructing scenarios and problems for the teaching of VoIP technologies and the used approach resulted as effective for improving the attainment of the defined learning objectives.

This paper presents a new way for automatic detection of SSVEPs through correlation analysis between tensor models. 3-way EEG tensor of channel x frequency x time is decomposed into constituting factor matrices using PARAFAC model. PARAFAC analysis of EEG tensor enables us to decompose multichannel EEG into constituting temporal, spectral and spatial signatures. SSVEPs characterized with localized spectral and spatial signatures are then detected exploiting a correlation analysis between extracted signatures of the EEG tensor and the corresponding simulated signatures of all target SSVEP signals. The SSVEP that has the highest correlation is selected as the intended target. Two flickers blinking at 8 and 13 Hz were used as visual stimuli and the detection was performed based on data packets of 1 second without overlapping. Five subjects participated in the experiments and the highest classification rate of 83.34% was achieved, leading to the Information Transfer Rate (ITR) of 21.01 bits/min.

Researches on modern wireless identification methods have been focused on RFID techniques and in particular on chipless solutions. A parametric study of folded multi-layer C-sections fabricated on flexible substrates and a chipless RFID tag with single group of folded C-sections are presented in this paper. Full-wave simulations have been done for the folded multi-layer C-section and the chipless RFID tag. The obtained results confirm the feasibility of the utilization of this concept with multi-layer C-sections in temporal multi-frequency encoding technique based on group delay. It has been found that the techniques with folded multi-layer structure offer a significant amount of group delay and highly narrow band delay peaks.

This paper presents two machine drive system based on a six-phase machine (SPM) and three-leg converters. The machine is composed of two three-phase groups. For the first configuration, one of the groups is connected to a three-leg converter and the other is connected to other two three-leg converters in an open-end winding configuration (see Fig. 4). For the second configuration, one of the groups is connected to a three-leg converter (similar to first one) and the other group is connected to a three-level NPC converter (see Fig. 5). Since the machine two groups are fed differently, the system topology is considered to be hybrid. The purpose of these topologies is to be an alternative configuration, being midway between the conventional six-leg inverter system (see Fig. 1) and the NPC six-leg inverter system (see Fig. 2) and Conventional twelve-leg Open-end inverter system (see Fig. 3). Compared with the conventional six-leg system, the proposed systems permits reducing the power processed by the semiconductor switches and their ratings, the dc-link voltage and the harmonic distortion. On the other hand, the proposed systems constitute less complex alternatives, compared with the open-end and NPC counterparts (see Fig. 3). PWM and control strategies are discussed. This paper investigates a power shunt filter composed by four standard h-bridge converters, acting in four-wire system. Compared with the usual four-wire shunt filters, the proposed converter permits reducing the dc-link voltages, the harmonic distortion or the switching frequency. Suitable control strategies to adjust the filter currents as well as the three dc-link voltages are presented. The PWM strategy is designed to command the converter according to the reference voltage provided by the controllers. Simulation and experimental results are presented.

This paper presents a single-phase AC-AC converter based on Modular Multilevel Cascade Converter (MMCC) with Double-Star Chopper-Cells (DSCC). This structure is composed by three DSCC-legs, the middle leg is shared, and also it does not present a common DC-link capacitor. It is suitable for regenerative low-power AC-AC conversion. The voltage-balancing control is presented to regulate the floating DC capacitor voltages. Furthermore, a grid current and terminal load voltage control is presented to correct the Power Factor (PF) and to ensure sinusoidal waveforms. Details about a designed 16-SM prototype are also presented. The experimental results allow validating the control strategies and the effectiveness of the proposed structure.

This paper presents a framework to support the development of three-dimensional virtual scenarios for an operator training simulator for electrical systems. Given the need to represent a variety of scenarios of interest, this can be an effort and time consuming task. The proposed framework promotes a systematic approach when building scenarios and is supported by tools from the ontology-based domain. An editing tool is also under construction. As it will be discussed in the paper, this approach resulted in the simplification of the scenario building process which is achieved by interchanging descriptions at different levels of abstraction. The descriptions concern the situation to be represented; plant objects' representation, both visual and behavioural, the latter represented as Coloured Petri Nets (CPN) models.

This paper presents two energy conversion systems with two-phase permanent magnet (PM) machine and a rectifier with reduced number of controlled switches. The topologies are conceived with the purpose of converting wind energy into electrical energy (i.e., a wind energy conversion system (WECS)) for low power applications. Compared with some three-phase generation systems with reduced number of controlled switches, the proposed topologies permit obtaining sinusoidal controlled machine currents, reducing dc-link voltage and dq currents low harmonic distortion.
