The green transition has brought about a worldwide-shift to the use of renewables as alternative energy sources. Because of this, high voltage DC has been a field of interest in power electronics due to its capability in efficiently transmitting power to reach remote areas. Typical DC-DC electronic power converter design has the capability of boosting voltage level to a certain extent but not enough for high-voltage applications. Using the DMAIC Approach of the Six Sigma, quality improvements in the design was proposed to stabilize operating frequency, bring up the output voltage from 100 VDC to 4,000 VDC and provide at least 10% margin of error in the apparent power measured at the output side to offset inherent losses in the electrical design. These proposed quality improvements were sustained by designing a control circuit that would ensure the attainment of the parameters set in the Define Phase of the DMAIC Approach. The result of the study is a practical 12 VDC to 4,000 VDC boost converter design that has incorporated all the proposed quality improvements.

This paper presents a single-phase four-leg ac-dc-ac converter, with one leg shared by the grid side and the load side. The proposed topology can generate input and output voltages with seven levels, presenting reduced harmonic distortion, in addition to using reduced voltage switches. The space-vector pulsewidth modulation strategy (SV-PWM), the control technique, the system model, and a comparison with a three-leg topology will be presented. As for performance comparison parameters, harmonic distortion in currents and voltages, the average switching frequency, and semiconductor losses will be used. The topology was simulated and assembled in the laboratory to obtain experimental results.

In this work it is presented a novel Zero-Current Switching Clamped Current (ZCS-CC) Converter that allows soft-switching for a full-bridge DC/DC Current Source Converter (CSC). The soft-switching is achieved using the inherent stray inductance of the switches and diodes, which forms a resonant tank with the output capacitive filter. This period of resonance occurs in the dead time between the two complementary switches of the full-bridge and is enough for both to be comutated with zero current. It is presented the theoretical foundation that justify its operation as well as the simulation and experimental results.

Annual global energy consumption growth is around 1.3% with forecasts until 2040. Photovoltaic systems became a suitable alternative to nuclear and fossil energy generation. In order to support this technology’s dissemination, we develop and evaluate an automated formal synthesis approach that assists in decision-making for off-grid systems. Our proposed approach, called PVz, is based on a variant of the counterexample-guided inductive synthesis;it has a multi-core feature, which can obtain the optimal sizing of photovoltaic systems focusing on Life Cycle Cost analysis. Given the electrical needs of a home, we seek a set of electrical equipment with the best possible combination of devices that meet the specified requirements. We calculate all costs related to maintenance over 20 years. The results presented are based on seven case studies;some of them are real ones from the Amazon region in Brazil. The same case studies were solved by a commercial optimization tool. Our technique and the commercial tool results were validated with popular simulation software to perform a fair comparison. Furthermore, we analyze some topics such as run-time, optimal solution, and configuration of the resulting systems. We claim that our technique is advantageous compared to the existing approaches in the literature. © 2021, CC BY-NC-SA.

Static load models hold immense applicability in Electric Power Systems (EPS) steady-state analysis. This paper describes the most used static load models - polynomial and exponential - and proposes a hybrid system for parameters identification of the described models and EPS simulation, through an interface between the Python programming language and the OpenDSS EPS simulation software. Providing a theoretical foundation, this work presents the methodology implemented in the system, which employs computational optimisation with the method of least squares and the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm, statistical analysis and EPS simulation. Its results, validated with measured data from various load compositions, acquired in a laboratory, indicate that the system has notable accuracy, precision and a wide application prospect in smart grids. © 2019 IEEE.

In this paper, dual Vienna rectifiers are proposed for Wind Energy Conversion System (WECS) applications with Open-End Winding (OEW) Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator (PMSG). Due to the reduced number of controlled switches, the proposed topologies have reduced costs and high reliability. Besides, they provide a better power quality using the same number of controlled switches than conventional structures presented in the literature, making them very attractive options for industry applications. The system model, space vector modulation, and control strategy are given. Simulation results are provided in order to validate their performance and feasibility.

Analog-to-Information Converter (AIC) is the physical implementation of Compressed Sensing (CS) systems to digitize signals directly from the analog domain. Due to non-idealities of components AIC hardware needs a calibration step to adjust parameters before its utilization. In this paper, we consider a theoretical linear model of an AIC architecture composed by parallel channels that suffers from synchronization problems between the input signal and the internal signals used to perform the measurement. Using a radar inspired technique we propose a method to estimate the delay between these signals. Obtained results show the accuracy of the proposed method and its potential to be used in AIC calibration techniques. © 2019 IEEE

This paper proposes a data acquisition system based on wireless sensor networks to measure the methane concentration level in a sanitary landfill, and a sensor node prototype for this application. The sensor node was designed to measure temperature, relative humidity and methane concentration. Based on the IEEE 802.15.4 standard, the proposed system allows a continuous monitoring of the methane emissions and reduces the exposition of workers to the hazardous environmental conditions of the landfill. A sensor node prototype was developed and tested as a demonstration of the feasibility of the system. © 2019 IEEE.

Point clouds have recently gained interest, especially for real-time applications and for 3D-scanned material, such as is used in autonomous driving, architecture, and engineering, to model real estate for renovation or display. Point clouds are associated with geometry information and attributes such as color. Be the color unique or direction-dependent (in the case of plenoptic point clouds), it reflects the colors observed by cameras displaced around the object. Hence, not only are the viewing references assumed, but the illumination spectrum and illumination geometry is also implicit. We propose a model-centric description of the 3D object, that is independent of the illumination and of the position of the cameras. We want to be able to describe the objects themselves such that, at a later stage, the rendering of the model may decide where to place illumination, from which it may calculate the image viewed by a given camera. We want to be able to describe transparent or translucid objects, mirrors, fishbowls, fog and smoke. Volumetric clouds may allow us to describe the air, however "empty", and introduce air particles, in a manner independent of the viewer position. For that, we rely on some eletromagnetic properties to arrive at seven attributes per voxel that would describe the material and its color or transparency. Three attributes are for the transmissivity of each color, three are for the attenuation of each color, and another attribute is for diffuseness. These attributes give information about the object to the renderer, with whom lies the decision on how to render and depict each object. © 2021, CC BY.

This paper presents the realization and the experimental tests of a new type of reluctance-based magnetic lead screw (RBMLS) that is attractive for many potential applications. The proposed topology presents structure simplification with the implementation of discretized permanent magnets (PM) and ferromagnetic semi-rings. The proposed RBMLS has PMs only in one of its movable parts, making it suitable for long-stroke applications. The dynamic experimental results for the realized prototype are going to be compared to the 3-D finite-element method (FEM) outcomes. Experimental static results have already been obtained and show good agreement. © 2019 IEEE.
