Indonesian river's potentials on Mini or Microhydro fuelled power plants has not been maximally explored despite its big potentials of utilization. The 500 MW energy potentials of Mini or Microhydro throughout Indonesia have only reached the point of 4.5% while National Energy Management Blueprint in 2050 targeted 31% of renewable energy (RE) is coming from Micro hydro energy. The applications of 80 mm diameter cross flow turbine in a household scale have drawn an increase in its experience with 450 Watts of power produced through small discharge of 20 liters/second and 3-meter head. Cross flow turbines testing in 130 mm length and 80 mm diameter conducted using Mini/micro hydropower Plant in environmentally friendly power House drum. Lower investment and operational design cost also to be made on its aim to reach community group or individual segments. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

This work presents an analysis of the grid-forming Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC), in the frequency domain, when it is controlled through single or dual-loop implementation. The dual-loop approach presents an inner current-loop control gathered with the external voltage-loop control, whereas the single-loop only presents a voltage-loop control for the grid-forming capability. In both cases, the control algorithms were implanted in a natural reference frame, including resonant controllers. The paper follows an impedance-modeling approach for introducing the analytical representation of the MMC in the frequency domain. These representations are, in fact, the linearized Teéenin-equivalent models of the single- and dual-loop grid-forming MMC. The results showed that the inner current-loop control is a feasible approach for damping specific resonant peaks of the Thevenin-equivalent impedance. In other words, the current-control loop adds a resistive parcel in MMC impedance in the frequency range in which the resonant peaks appear. As a consequence, the LC resonance between this impedance and the capacitor bank in the main bus is damped. The article also contains some switching-level EMTDC/PSCAD simulations to validate the work.

This paper presents a universal active power filter (UAPF) for harmonic and sag/swell voltage compensation based on the nine-leg converter and a single dc-link. The proposed UAPF combines three three-phase converters operating as series-shunt-series filters. An SV-PWM technique was used to improve the voltage levels generated by the converters by obtaining multilevel voltages. The connection made in the topology proposed in this paper allows an improvement in the harmonic distortions as well as the semiconductors losses. The complete control system is developed, simulation and experimental results are shown for validation purposes.

This paper proposes three configurations of unidirectional open-end winding (OEW) cascaded multilevel rectifiers with reduced number of controlled switches. They are based on Vienna rectifiers and are composed of a series combination of two three-phase converters and three H-bridges employing floating capacitors (per phase). These configurations make the ac-dc conversion power, supplied by a permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM), which is connected to the rectifier by an OEW configuration. Compared to the conventional, proposed systems synthesize the same or higher number of voltage levels using fewer number of controlled switches and is still possible to obtain lower converter current harmonic distortion. Furthermore, they can operate with lower switch blocking voltage ratio. These features make them attractive options to the industry due to their low costs, low control complexity and size, besides they are more reliable and less prone to failure. Therefore, proposed configurations have a better cost-benefit than conventional one. The system model, PWM technique, capacitor voltage balancing and control strategy are given. Simulation and experimental results are provided in order to validate their feasibility.

Treatments based on Virtual Reality have been successfully used in motor rehabilitation of issues such as Spinal Cord Injury and Stroke. Highly immersive Virtual environments combined with biofeedback can be utilized to train functional activities on patients with these motor disabilities. This work details the development of a portable Virtual Reality environment to train upper limbs activities on Spinal Cord Injury subjects. The Virtual Reality environment depicts a personalized physiotherapy room where the user trains elbow and shoulder by reaching 5 spots on table. Also the user have a biofeedback of both hands’ position. Finally this system will be integrated a pilot biomechanical analysis using The Motion Monitor system to compare a group of patients before and after a 6 week intervention with Virtual Reality. The Piecewise Polynomial Interpolation (PPI) function approach is aimed at solving nonlinear programming problems with disjoint feasible regions. In such problems, disjointedness is generally associated with prohibited operating zones, which correspond to bands of values that a variable is not allowed to assume. An analytical implication of such prohibited operating zones is to make the objective function, as well as its domain, discontinuous. The PPI function approach consists in replacing the constraints associated with prohibited operating zones by an equivalent set of equality and inequality constraints, thereby allowing the application of any efficient gradient-based optimization method for solving the equivalent problem. In this paper, we present the definition of the PPI function and provide the mathematical proofs for its properties. Copyright © 2020, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Analog-to-information converters (AIC) are physical implementations of Compressed Sensing that have been proposed to overcome the technological limitations of the analog-to-digital converters (ADC) in terms of bandwidth and quantity of data produced after conversion. The AIC hardware suffers from non-idealities of components and subsystems, which reduces the quality of the measured signal reconstruction. Such effects can be compensated by calibration that normally have been implemented in the signal recovery methods. In this paper, we analyze a calibration method for AIC that takes into account only the measurements produced by the AIC. Results show that the hardware calibration improves the signal reconstruction with regard to signal-to-noise and distortion ratio (SINAD), independent of the reconstruction algorithm. © 2018 IEEE.

In this work, a family of multilevel single-phase converters is proposed. This family is based on cascaded cells, each composed by K two level legs connected to the primary windings of K - 1 transformers, while their secondary windings are cascaded to generate a multilevel voltage. Two kinds of cells are considered: the shared leg (SL), in which one leg is connected to all transformers, and the multiple shared legs (MSL), which has various legs each shared between two transformers. The turns ratios of th transformers can be calculated in order to give each pole voltage a different voltage gain in the secondary side. This causes the legs and transformers to be asymmetrical, increasing the levels-per-switch generated. The generalized model, turns ratio calculation and PWM design are provided for proposed converters composed by M SL or MSL cells. By means of simulation and experimental results, two topologies within proposed family are analyzed, one composed by one SL cell, and the other by one MSL cell, both with four legs. They are compared to the conventional cascaded h-bridge (CHB) with two bridges and corresponding isolation transformers. Various cases of asymmetry are considered, and results are analyzed to show that the configurations within the proposed family can provide better performance than the CHB in terms of switching stress and harmonic distortion.

In this paper a new single-phase AC-DC-AC five- level X-type current source converter is proposed. The use of the X-type topology reduces the conduction losses of the converter, whilst the five-level configuration may reduce the total harmonic distortion under lower frequencies, and allows the increase of the power capability of the converter. The novelty of this paper resides on the multilevel configuration being applied to a X-type current source converter. The operation and sine- triangle pulse-width modulation of the proposed converter are presented, as they are validated by simulation results. Besides that, experimental results for the rectifier side (AC-DC) are presented.

Stainless steel has been used in several types of constructions. Although many of their mechanical properties are similar to the properties of carbon steel, their nonlinear characteristics imply in different design rules. This non-linearity mainly affects the response to local and flexural buckling. The Eurocode 3: Part 1-4 (2006) stainless steel design standard can be applied to hot rolled, welded and cold formed products, but the provisions of this code are rather conservative, with a limited application due to the lack of experimental data. Thus, one of those areas that require attention and study concerns the behaviour of columns made of rolled stainless steel angles. This paper describes an experimental campaign made on rolled stainless steel angles under axial compression. The tests were performed on stainless steel rolled angles with lengths varying from 150 mm to 1400 mm while the collapse involved: flexural-torsional and flexural buckling modes. © 2019 Taylor & Francis Group, London, UK.
