Indonesian river's potentials on Mini or Microhydro fuelled power plants has not been maximally explored despite its big potentials of utilization. The 500 MW energy potentials of Mini or Microhydro throughout Indonesia have only reached the point of 4.5% while National Energy Management Blueprint in 2050 targeted 31% of renewable energy (RE) is coming from Micro hydro energy. The applications of 80 mm diameter cross flow turbine in a household scale have drawn an increase in its experience with 450 Watts of power produced through small discharge of 20 liters/second and 3-meter head. Cross flow turbines testing in 130 mm length and 80 mm diameter conducted using Mini/micro hydropower Plant in environmentally friendly power House drum. Lower investment and operational design cost also to be made on its aim to reach community group or individual segments. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

This paper proposes a multilevel shunt active power filter (SAPF) to deal with either harmonic currents compensation or reactive power compensation. Such a device can reduce the harmonic distortion at the grid currents provided by non-linear loads located in stiff systems. The proposed SAPF is based on three-phase bridge (TPB) converters connected to cascaded single-phase transformers. The transformers arrangement permits the compensator to use a single dc-link unit which simplifies the control strategy and number of sensors. The multilevel waveforms are generated by using a suitable PWM strategy associated with the transformers turns ratio. Modularity and simple maintenance make the proposed SAPF an attractive solution compared to some conventional configurations. The model, PWM technique and control strategy, are presented as well as studies considering harmonic distortion and semiconductor losses estimation. Simulation and experimental results are presented in order to validate theoretical approaches.

This paper investigates a three-phase shunt power filter based on three standard three-phase interconnected converters. Compared with the usual three-phase shunt filter, the proposed converter permits to reduce the dc-link voltages and reduce either harmonic distortion or switching frequency. Control strategies suitable to control the filter and circulating currents as well as the three dc-link voltages are presented. A PWM strategy is designed to command the converter according to the reference voltage generated by the controllers. Simulation and experimental results are presented.

This paper proposes three unidirectional ac-dc conversion power systems for wind energy conversion system (WECS) applications. These topologies are based on Vienna rectifiers and have reduced number of controlled switches, which allows reduce size, costs and is still possible to obtain low current harmonic distortion. They are composed of a series connection of two three-phase converters associated to a permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) by an open-end winding (OEW) configuration. Compared with the three-phase rectifier with reduced number of controlled switches, proposed topologies offer a higher levels-per-switch ratio, allowing to achieve a sinusoidal converter current with same or lower harmonic content. Besides this, they can offer lower switch blocking voltage. These characteristics make them very interesting options to the manufacturers due to reduced costs and better power quality offered. The system model, PWM technique and control strategy are discussed. Simulation and experimental results are provided in order to validate their performance and feasibility.

In this paper a hybrid topology of Modular Multilevel Cascade Converter (MMCC) - Double-Star Chopper-Cells (DSCC) is proposed. This configuration is applied as a unidirectional controlled single-phase rectifier, wherein one of the converter legs is composed by diodes instead of the submodules (SMs) connections. In order to ensure the energy balance among the local SM capacitors, a voltage balancing control strategy is also presented. Besides, a grid current control strategy associated to a method that eliminates zero-crossing distortion caused by the diode leg is proposed, resulting in a power-factor correction (PFC) and a sinusoidal grid current. Experimental results are presented and allow validating the control strategies.

The paper assesses the torque capability of high phase induction machines taking a conventional three phase machine as the basis for comparison;analytical expressions for torque as a function of phase number for machines with sinusoidal and trapezoidal airgap field are derived and discussed. A trapezoidal field is assumed to be produced through the imposition of a third harmonic current in the stator current besides the fundamental. The torque capability comparison is performed keeping the airgap peak induction and the linear stator current constant, thus resulting about the same amount of magnetic and winding losses for variable phase number. It is shown that the main factors influencing the torque capability of machines with sinusoidal airgap field are the winding characteristics including number of slots per phase and pole - and the winding pitch. Higher torques are associated with windings without pitch shortening and with low values of slots per phase and pole. It is also shown that machines with trapezoidal field can have higher torque capability than sinusoidal field machines, being the greatest torque improvement associated with low values of slots per pole and phase. Under the assumptions made, torque improvements from 10% to 15% can be obtained. The paper also shows that for sinusoidal field machines, the maximal torque practically obtained with seven phases, while for trapezoidal field the maximal torque is obtained with eleven phases.

The increase in the number of power electronic applications has led to harmonic pollution of the power grid. Harmonic resonance that can result in severe voltage distortion is a well documented problem. Several suppression techniques have been proposed to solve this problem. This paper proposes a technique to cooperatively operate multiple Active Power Line Conditioner (APLC) installed in the same Electric Power System (EPS) for minimizing the effect of harmonic pollution. The APLC operates as a tunable conductance for specific harmonic frequencies based on to the maximum desired harmonic voltage distortion. The proposed control is based on the reference Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) and Individual Harmonic Distortion (IHD) values specified by the IEEE Std 519-1992 recommendations. The damping conductance for each harmonic frequency can be adjusted separately and autonomously without any communication between the points of common coupling. Simulation and experimental results are used to demonstrate the correctness of the proposed approach as well as its feasibility.

Faults in industrial communication protocols represent an important problem for industrial systems as they may lead to severe losses. Observing the need for approaches to deal with this type of problem, this paper studies reliability aspects related to industrial communication protocols and the modeling of possible communication faults. The work proposes a requirements specification based on aspect-oriented concepts to map and model common faults in design phases of embedded systems. A model integrating fault modeling in communication protocols extending the Real-Time From Requirements to Design using Aspects (RT-FRIDA) framework is presented. A case study on vehicular networks was conducted considering the nonfunctional requirements specification of an Active Suspension System. Then, a sequence of fault requirements based in recent studies is modeled and presented to validate the proposed approach. The main contribution of this work is to enable the use of fault modeling in communication protocols and aspect-oriented modeling techniques to mitigate the fault impact in the timing behavior of critical tasks. This study indicates the use of observers' technique modeled to fault diagnosis, so that they can be aggregated into a real-time control system. © 2017 IEEE.

This article aims to present the methodologies of development, analysis and system design of an Electronic Bengal, with object-oriented and structured methods, trying to establish the main features of these. From this scenario, several methods of system analysis are available for use. Among the studies conducted to develop the system, using automation techniques, are SART (Structured Analysis Real-Time) and UML (Unified Modeling Language) modelings. Each has its peculiarities, both in the way of diagramming and about the script. The project proposes an electronic device with an embedded system that contains a control algorithm to enable vibration and audio electromechanical transducers. The project is an electronic device based on open-source flexible platforms to assist in the orientation and mobility of the visually impaired during their displacement. © 2013 IEEE.

The paper addresses a comparison between the performance of a five phase and a three phase prototype induction machine under steady state. The main aspects included in the comparison are: torque capability, efficiency, power factor, losses and active volume. An analytical model for steady state including losses and saturation is also presented;the model also considers the effect of the third harmonic airgap induction, which in the case of five phase machine can be used to reshape the airgap induction and increase the torque capability. The comparison is based on the data of two prototypes having the same frame size and about the same volume of conducting material and iron. The performance comparison shows that some advantages of high phase machines are in fact limited by losses and demand a specific design to be effectively achieved.
