Treatments based on Virtual Reality have been successfully used in motor rehabilitation of issues such as Spinal Cord Injury and Stroke. Highly immersive Virtual environments combined with biofeedback can be utilized to train functional activities on patients with these motor disabilities. This work details the development of a portable Virtual Reality environment to train upper limbs activities on Spinal Cord Injury subjects. The Virtual Reality environment depicts a personalized physiotherapy room where the user trains elbow and shoulder by reaching 5 spots on table. Also the user have a biofeedback of both hands’ position. Finally this system will be integrated a pilot biomechanical analysis using The Motion Monitor system to compare a group of patients before and after a 6 week intervention with Virtual Reality. The Piecewise Polynomial Interpolation (PPI) function approach is aimed at solving nonlinear programming problems with disjoint feasible regions. In such problems, disjointedness is generally associated with prohibited operating zones, which correspond to bands of values that a variable is not allowed to assume. An analytical implication of such prohibited operating zones is to make the objective function, as well as its domain, discontinuous. The PPI function approach consists in replacing the constraints associated with prohibited operating zones by an equivalent set of equality and inequality constraints, thereby allowing the application of any efficient gradient-based optimization method for solving the equivalent problem. In this paper, we present the definition of the PPI function and provide the mathematical proofs for its properties. Copyright © 2020, The Authors. All rights reserved.

The performance of a photovoltaic (PV) generation system (PGS) is directly associated with the irradiation incidence over the PV panel and the maximum energy will be delivered only for full panel illumination. However, when the PV panel (or strings of panels) operates under a partial shadowing condition (PSC), only a percentage of the maximum power will be delivered. This power can be even lower without a proper configuration of the conversion system. Therefore, we propose a partile swarm optimization (PSO) of the conversion system which improves the Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) and ensures that the maximum power will be delivered despite of the partial shadowing condition.

In this work, a family of multilevel single-phase converters is proposed. This family is based on cascaded cells, each composed by K two level legs connected to the primary windings of K - 1 transformers, while their secondary windings are cascaded to generate a multilevel voltage. Two kinds of cells are considered: the shared leg (SL), in which one leg is connected to all transformers, and the multiple shared legs (MSL), which has various legs each shared between two transformers. The turns ratios of th transformers can be calculated in order to give each pole voltage a different voltage gain in the secondary side. This causes the legs and transformers to be asymmetrical, increasing the levels-per-switch generated. The generalized model, turns ratio calculation and PWM design are provided for proposed converters composed by M SL or MSL cells. By means of simulation and experimental results, two topologies within proposed family are analyzed, one composed by one SL cell, and the other by one MSL cell, both with four legs. They are compared to the conventional cascaded h-bridge (CHB) with two bridges and corresponding isolation transformers. Various cases of asymmetry are considered, and results are analyzed to show that the configurations within the proposed family can provide better performance than the CHB in terms of switching stress and harmonic distortion.

In this paper a new single-phase AC-DC-AC five- level X-type current source converter is proposed. The use of the X-type topology reduces the conduction losses of the converter, whilst the five-level configuration may reduce the total harmonic distortion under lower frequencies, and allows the increase of the power capability of the converter. The novelty of this paper resides on the multilevel configuration being applied to a X-type current source converter. The operation and sine- triangle pulse-width modulation of the proposed converter are presented, as they are validated by simulation results. Besides that, experimental results for the rectifier side (AC-DC) are presented.

Stainless steel has been used in several types of constructions. Although many of their mechanical properties are similar to the properties of carbon steel, their nonlinear characteristics imply in different design rules. This non-linearity mainly affects the response to local and flexural buckling. The Eurocode 3: Part 1-4 (2006) stainless steel design standard can be applied to hot rolled, welded and cold formed products, but the provisions of this code are rather conservative, with a limited application due to the lack of experimental data. Thus, one of those areas that require attention and study concerns the behaviour of columns made of rolled stainless steel angles. This paper describes an experimental campaign made on rolled stainless steel angles under axial compression. The tests were performed on stainless steel rolled angles with lengths varying from 150 mm to 1400 mm while the collapse involved: flexural-torsional and flexural buckling modes. © 2019 Taylor & Francis Group, London, UK.

The applications aimed at monitoring and controlling smart homes and buildings, health, industrial environments, traffic, energy consumption, resources, and so on, are being increasingly deployed due to the advantages they provide, increasing efficiency and decreasing costs. In this context Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) have become a leading solution providing the appropriate mean to get and collect data and deliver it for their processing. Sensor nodes in a WSN have resource constraints, presenting low processing power and, in some cases, restrictions in power consumption. Resources availability constraints force researchers and engineers to develop proper Operating Systems (OS) aimed at low-power wireless devices, and one of the most important and in active use is the TinyOS. This paper describes an experimental analysis and evaluation which investigates relevant features and evaluates the performance (throughput, network delay, success rate, and energy consumption) of WSN under the constraint of using the low-power-consumption-aimed chosen operating system in an harsh outdoor industrial environment for with two different protocols: Active Message (AM) layer protocol and the fully 802.15.4 compliant protocol stack TKN15.4. Based on the results we conclude that TKN15.4 is better in energy consumption and success rate. On the other hand, AM protocol allows running multiple services using the same radio, but at the cost of an excessive energy consumption. © 2019, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Wireless networks offer great flexibility and ease of deployment for the rapid implementation of smart grids. However, these data network technologies are prone to security issues. Especially, the risk of eavesdropping attacks increases due to the inherent characteristics of the wireless medium. In this context, physical layer security can augment secrecy through appropriate coding and signal processing. In this paper we consider the use of faster-than-Nyquist signaling to introduce artificial noise in the wireless network segment of the smart grid; with the aim of reinforce the information security at the physical layer. The results show that the proposed scheme can significantly improves the secrecy rate of the channel. Guaranteeing, in coexistence with other security mechanisms and despite the presence of potential eavesdroppers, a reliable and secure flow of information for smart grids.

In this paper a Wind Energy Conversion System based on Doubly Fed Induction Generator (DFIG) with series active compensator without additional transformer is proposed. The series compensator acts on the compensation of the grid voltages disturbance (harmonic distortion, voltage sag and voltage swell) in the DFIG stator voltages. The series active compensator is based on three H-bridge inverters operating with floating capacitors. The proposed control system regulates the floating capacitors voltages with no need for external sources. Simulation and experimental results are presented in order to evaluate the proposed system.

This paper presents the realization and the experimental tests of a new type of reluctance-based magnetic lead screw (RBMLS) that is attractive for many potential applications. The proposed topology presents structure simplification with the implementation of discretized permanent magnets (PM) and ferromagnetic semi-rings. The proposed RBMLS has PMs only in one of its movable parts, making it suitable for long-stroke applications. The dynamic experimental results for the realized prototype are going to be compared to the 3-D finite-element method (FEM) outcomes. Experimental static results have already been obtained and show good agreement.
