Ferromagnetic materials have magnetic properties which determine its magnetic field conductivity characteristics. Such characteristics are extremely important for the proper selection and use of these materials in measurement processes, for example. Therefore, this paper presents an equipment for the characterization of ferromagnetic materials constructed in a laboratory. The experimental results of this equipment are acquired and compared with the experimental results obtained with an industrially manufactured apparatus called hysteresisgraph, designed to provide magnetic characterization of magnetic materials. The results of the comparison demonstrate that the equipment presented has low relative error and can be applied in academic projects which require magnetic characterization of ferromagnetic materials developed in the laboratory.

In the present work we introduce a system identification framework where no a priori information on the system to be identified is available. Focusing in the specific case of radial basis functions neural networks models, we insert the choice of the model complexity and its inputs in the optimization procedure together with the model parameters, aiming at accuracy, model validity and regularization in a multiobjective approach. The multicriteria problem is solved by means of the multiobjective cuckoo search, which is based on an archiving technique and the crowding distance metric. Simulation results are promising when the methodology is applied to identify a robot arm given solely input and output data.

In this paper, we present the modeling for a rapid characterization of integrated spiral inductors. Closed-form has been used to estimate the parameters of the equivalent circuit, which are calculated as a function of the parameters of the inductor physical design. The double-$\pi$ equivalent circuit was adopted to model the physical phenomena resulting from electromagnetic coupling and high-frequency operation. The method for calculating the oxide capacitance has included the contribution of the fringing electric fields for better prediction of the inductor characteristics. In order to verify the performed modeling, a set of octagonal on-chip spiral inductors with different geometries were simulated in the Momentum ADS and the main figures of merit of the inductor were compared. The mean error between the model and EM simulation was 3.6% for the DC inductance, 7.7% for the maximum value of the quality factor and 1.3% for the self-resonance frequency. © 2018 IEEE.

In this paper, we propose a model for the rapid characterization of MOS-type capacitors in the accumulation region. Closed-form analytical expressions have been used to estimate the equivalent circuit elements, which are calculated as a function of the design parameters of the layout and of the technological process. To verify the modeling carried out, a set of MOS capacitors with different geometries were simulated in ADS® and the main characteristics of the capacitor were compared. Based on the model, an analysis/optimization was implemented in MATLAB® in order to determine the capacitor/cell layout parameters that optimize its structure, based on a figure of merit. Compared to another work in the literature, the proposed method showed a chip-area reduction of 20.82% and an ESR of 16.38% smaller for the same capacitance value. Capacitor optimization not only contributes to reducing costs but also to improving the performance of the circuit it will make part of. © 2023 IEEE.

This paper introduces a new breed of four-wire (4W) multilevel shunt compensator to deal with either harmonic or reactive power compensation. The converter configurations are generalized for K-stages and the main benefits of proposed topologies lie on i) multilevel waveforms generation, ii) single dc-link unit and iii) modular characteristic. The configurations are based on cascaded transformers along with three-phase-bridge (TPB) converters. These converters are directly connected to the transformer primary side. A suitable PWM strategy combined with an appropriate transformer turns ratio guarantees the desirable multilevel output waveforms. The modularity feature provides simple maintenance and makes the proposed shunt active power filters (SAPFs) an attractive solution in comparison with conventional configurations. The configuration model and overall control are addressed, as well. Simulation and experimental results are presented for theoretical validation. © 2017 IEEE.

Two new algorithms to compute the direct and the inverse discrete wavelet transform of continuous streams of data are discussed in this paper. The algorithms are optimized to be used in uniprocessor systems, presenting as one of their main features the ability to compute over the borders of the data segments without relying on any techniques that are traditionally used for this task, like zero padding. A modified version of the Recursive Pyramid Algorithm was used to compute the direct transform, keeping just the features to minimize data storage but eliminating its dependency on extension techniques. The inverse transform is computed by an algorithm inspired in the RPA, the quadrature mirror filter bank and the overlap-save method for filter convolutions. To evaluate the performance the algorithms were implemented on a DSP coupled to a digitizer through its external memory bus, what allowed deterministic behavior. After a stage of optimization an analysis of data storage and computation load were made. These results and the potential applications are discussed at the end of the paper. ©2005 IEEE.

This paper investigates a power shunt filter composed by four standard h-bridge converters, acting in four-wire system. Compared with the usual four-wire shunt filters, the proposed converter permits reducing the dc-link voltages, the harmonic distortion or the switching frequency. Suitable control strategies to adjust the filter currents as well as the three dc-link voltages are presented. The PWM strategy is designed to command the converter according to the reference voltage provided by the controllers. Simulation and experimental results are presented.

Within unmanned aerial vehicles on-going research topics, automatic target recognition is acquiring relevance. This is due to the easiness with which it is possible to acquire such devices. In order to do this, signal processing and classification techniques could be adopted. Also, in order to improve the classification ratio, optimization techniques could be used. This subject is object of study for many researchers, but the authors worry about the lack of information while using single-objective optimization techniques. The proposed work comprises the application of multi-objective optimization design in order to create an automatic target recognition system to discriminate different types of unmanned aerial vehicles. In order to accomplish this, a K-band radar system is used to send and receive electromagnetic signals, which are then processed with feature extraction techniques, and finally, applied on an artificial neural network system. In order to improve the system's classification ratio, the classifier is defined as a multi-objective problem, and evolutionary multi-objective optimization techniques are applied. Finally, in order to select the best possible trade-off, the level diagrams multi-criteria decision making methodology is used to compare different solutions. © 2017

This paper discusses a modified Direct Torque Control (DTC) method in order to reduce phase current harmonic distortion in a nine-phase asymmetrical induction motor drive system. Since the classical DTC is a direct adaptation from the three-phase case, it does not take into account the presence of the non-producing torque current components obtained from the Space Vector Decomposition (SVD) technique. Thus, in classical DTC these non-producing torque components assume high amplitudes, causing distortion in phase currents. In this way, it is shown that modified DTC minimizes the undesired components, reducing significantly the distortion in phase currents while maintaining the fast dynamic response of classical DTC.

This paper reports an effective method of packaging a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) for the simultaneous measurement of temperature and strain. The technique consists of embedding two fiber Bragg grating sensors inside a polymeric material with different geometrical characteristics. The mechanical and thermal characterizations of the optical transducer were performed. Then a matrix equation used measurements of the wavelength shifts from the two sensors and yielded information about the temperature and strain coefficients. The preliminary results demonstrate the feasibility of the encapsulation technique allowing measurements of temperature and strain in smart structures and harsh environments. The experimental procedure provides robustness to the sensor and the matrix equation approach has the potential to determine simultaneously the strain and temperature coefficients. © 2013 SBMO/SBMag.
