This paper proposes a multilevel shunt active power filter (SAPF) to deal with either harmonic currents compensation or reactive power compensation. Such a device can reduce the harmonic distortion at the grid currents provided by non-linear loads located in stiff systems. The proposed SAPF is based on three-phase bridge (TPB) converters connected to cascaded single-phase transformers. The transformers arrangement permits the compensator to use a single dc-link unit which simplifies the control strategy and number of sensors. The multilevel waveforms are generated by using a suitable PWM strategy associated with the transformers turns ratio. Modularity and simple maintenance make the proposed SAPF an attractive solution compared to some conventional configurations. The model, PWM technique and control strategy, are presented as well as studies considering harmonic distortion and semiconductor losses estimation. Simulation and experimental results are presented in order to validate theoretical approaches. © 2016 IEEE.

This paper investigates a power shunt filter composed by four standard h-bridge converters, acting in four-wire system. Compared with the usual four-wire shunt filters, the proposed converter permits reducing the dc-link voltages, the harmonic distortion or the switching frequency. Suitable control strategies to adjust the filter currents as well as the three dc-link voltages are presented. The PWM strategy is designed to command the converter according to the reference voltage provided by the controllers. Simulation and experimental results are presented.

This paper is about modeling and control of a XY positioning table. It is described the construction and instrumentation of a double axis positioning system. It is developed a general electromechanical model, followed by the identification of simplified models for control purposes. At last, it is proposed a PID control strategy, tuned by Internal Model Control (IMC) technique. © 2016 IEEE.

This paper presents a single-phase AC-AC converter based on Modular Multilevel Cascade Converter (MMCC) with Double-Star Chopper-Cells (DSCC). This structure is composed by three DSCC-legs, the middle leg is shared, and also it does not present a common DC-link capacitor. It is suitable for regenerative low-power AC-AC conversion. The voltage-balancing control is presented to regulate the floating DC capacitor voltages. Furthermore, a grid current and terminal load voltage control is presented to correct the Power Factor (PF) and to ensure sinusoidal waveforms. Details about a designed 16-SM prototype are also presented. The experimental results allow validating the control strategies and the effectiveness of the proposed structure.

In this work it is proposed a multilevel T-type configuration for a high-frequency pulsating DC-link inverter for three-phase applications. The configuration consists of two DC/DC-pulsating converters cascaded with a DC-link capacitor-less three-phase three-level T-type inverter. Due to the absence of DC-link electrolytic capacitors, the proposed inverter guarantees a long lifetime and high power density. The DC-DC-pulsating converters aim to generate the high-frequency pulsating DC-link waveform profiles which have to be synchronized with the three-phase inverter PWM. Comparing to the conventional PWM, the proposed technique presents reduced switching losses due to the fact only one leg commutes during a switching period while the other two legs keep clamped in high or low impedance. Details of control strategy and modulation are presented, such as experimental results to validate the theoretical approach.

This paper proposes two seven level asymmetric inverter with coupled inductors that enable a reduction in the number of controlled switching devices. However, the lack of redundant states and difference in the maximum pole voltages reduce the performance of the inverters due to higher winding currents and saturation of magnetic core. For mitigating those issues, a coupled inductor with elevated magnetizing inductance is used. The operation principle, conducting states and modulation strategy are described. Simulation and experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of proposed topology.

This paper presents a three-phase integrated PFC AC-AC resonant inverter with boost effect for Induction Heating (IH) Application. This converter is composed by three independent half-bridge boost rectifier and class D resonant inverters with non-smoothed DC link that achieve high power factor operation. The magnetic coupling of the three coils was measured for characterizing the resonant behavior of the arrangement. Experimental results validate the modes of operation with ZVS and the converter performance in the entire power input range (PF and THD).

This paper presents an ac-dc-ac reversible six-phase machine drive system. It is composed of single-phase bridge converters connected in series in the grid side and single-phase bridge converters connected at the machine phase terminals. The proposed topology eliminates the input isolation transformers and reduces the power processed by converter switches and the harmonic distortion in the grid side. The model and the control strategy have been developed. Simulation and experimental results are presented.

This paper presents a framework to support the development of three-dimensional virtual scenarios for an operator training simulator for electrical systems. Given the need to represent a variety of scenarios of interest, this can be an effort and time consuming task. The proposed framework promotes a systematic approach when building scenarios and is supported by tools from the ontology-based domain. An editing tool is also under construction. As it will be discussed in the paper, this approach resulted in the simplification of the scenario building process which is achieved by interchanging descriptions at different levels of abstraction. The descriptions concern the situation to be represented; plant objects' representation, both visual and behavioural, the latter represented as Coloured Petri Nets (CPN) models.

In this paper, a Four-Port AC/DC-DC/AC conversion system is proposed using two full-bridge converters and a high-frequency transformer following the principle of Dual Active Bridge Converter. Two full-bridge AC/DC single-phase converters are connected by coupling their boost inductance to create a high-frequency transformer of the resulting proposed converter. The isolated power transfer between converters is controlled by the duty cycles and the phase-shift applied to the primary and secondary of the split transformer. The boundaries of the switching modes and the power transferred through the high-frequency transformer were obtained analytically. The system feasibility was validated by simulations and by a 300 W prototype with 94.9% maximum efficiency.
