This paper presents a single-phase AC-AC converter based on Modular Multilevel Cascade Converter (MMCC) with Double-Star Chopper-Cells (DSCC). This structure is composed by three DSCC-legs, the middle leg is shared, and also it does not present a common DC-link capacitor. It is suitable for regenerative low-power AC-AC conversion. The voltage-balancing control is presented to regulate the floating DC capacitor voltages. Furthermore, a grid current and terminal load voltage control is presented to correct the Power Factor (PF) and to ensure sinusoidal waveforms. Details about a designed 16-SM prototype are also presented. The experimental results allow validating the control strategies and the effectiveness of the proposed structure.

Cancers arising from the oropharynx have become increasingly more studied in the past few years, as they are now epidemic domestically. These tumors are treated with definitive (chemo)radiotherapy, and have local recurrence as a primary mode of clinical failure. Recent data suggest that 'radiomics', or extraction of image texture analysis to generate mineable quantitative data from medical images, can reflect phenotypes for various cancers. Several groups have shown that developed radiomic signatures, in head and neck cancers, can be correlated with survival outcomes. This data descriptor defines a repository for head and neck radiomic challenges, executed via a Kaggle in Class platform, in partnership with the MICCAI society 2016 annual *** public challenges were designed to leverage radiomics and/or machine learning workflows to discriminate HPV phenotype in one challenge (HPV status challenge) and to identify patients who will develop a local recurrence in the primary tumor volume in the second one (Local recurrence prediction challenge) in a segmented, clinically curated anonymized oropharyngeal cancer (OPC) data set.

The proposal of this research is to present the development of a tool that might be useful in rehabilitation, for subjects with disability, that suffer from some kind of limbs movement limitation. This tool carries a 3D Virtual Reality Environment (VRE), which emulates the movement of a healthy person, using the immersion of the subject through an avatar. To do so, and test its feasibility, pre acquired motor imagery signals were used to test the VRE as an off-line Brain computer Interface (BCI) feedback. The subject's brain waves were captured by an Electroencephalography (EEG) equipment. For training the classifier, 45 trials, 25 seconds long, were used, and 15 trials for its validation. Five mental tasks were tested with the BCI, and the one with the best results (imagination of the manipulation of a cube) was used to move the avatar through a virtual room.

This paper presents a framework to support the development of three-dimensional virtual scenarios for an operator training simulator for electrical systems. Given the need to represent a variety of scenarios of interest, this can be an effort and time consuming task. The proposed framework promotes a systematic approach when building scenarios and is supported by tools from the ontology-based domain. An editing tool is also under construction. As it will be discussed in the paper, this approach resulted in the simplification of the scenario building process which is achieved by interchanging descriptions at different levels of abstraction. The descriptions concern the situation to be represented; plant objects' representation, both visual and behavioural, the latter represented as Coloured Petri Nets (CPN) models.

Stress can affect all people, regardless of age, gender or ethnicity. The human body uses stress as an adaptive response against several situations, but it can cause physical, mental or emotional distress. In stress situation the nervous system evokes the same physiological responses, whatever the type of stress and these responses cause changes in the physical, cognitive, emotional and social performance. This paper proposes to develop a methodology for analyzing the stress level using electroencephalographic signals (EEG) based on asymmetry patterns of alpha waves. The subjects of this research are professionals from Vitoria's Fire Department. Activities of the Central Nervous System are capture using Emotiv Epoc Headset, placed on the volunteer's scalp. The signals are analyzed from the frontal cortex at positions Fp1 (AF3), Fp2 (AF4), F3 and F4, according to of the international 10-20 system. The results are analyzed together with some peripheral physiological signals, such as: heart beat rate (ECG), peripheral blood flow, skin conductance, breath rate, body temperature and change in level of salivary cortisone. In addition, a psychological assessment of voluntary's stress is performed through a questionnaire of LIPP-ISS (Inventory of Symptom Stress). A validation study is conducted through a comparison with data available in literature, as well as with evaluation conducted by a psychologist. The results are analyzed in order to get a correlation between EEG signals and physical, mental or emotional stress.

Graphically realistic, haptics-enabled, virtual reality surgical simulations are becoming increasingly popular training tools for neurosurgical procedures and surgical skills. Compared with traditional training models, virtual simulations are safe, versatile, consistent, and are relatively cost effective. Most simulations are deficient, however, in representing the diverse anatomical variations that occur clinically. In this work, we describe the design and implementation of a pipeline to create patient-specific surgical scenarios for simulator-based training of the endoscopic third ventriculostomy: the procedure of choice for treating obstructive hydrocephalus. © 2014 The authors and IOS Press. This paper presents a comparison among three methods for Steady-State Visually Evoked Potentials (SSVEP) detection. These techniques are based on Power Spectral Density Analysis (PSDA) and Canonical Correlation Analysis (CCA). The first method estimates the signal-to-noise ratio of the power spectrum in each stimulus frequency using PSDA, which is called Traditional-PSDA. The second analysis estimates the relation between the difference of the stimulus frequency and its neighbor frequencies, using the power spectrum in these neighbor frequencies, and seeks the neighbor frequency which presents the lowest relation value. This technique is referred to Ratio-PSDA. The third and final techniques called Hybrid-PSDA-CCA. The performances of the methods were evaluated using a database of electroencephalogram (EEG) signals. The EEG signals were recorded from 19 volunteers, from which six people present disabilities. They were stimulated with visual stimuli flickering at 5.6, 6.4, 6.9 and 8.0 Hz. The system performance was evaluated considering the accuracy, the Information Transfer Rate (ITR) and the computational cost for several windows length of each stimulus frequency. The results showed that the Hybrid-PSDA-CCA method achieved the best result with an average accuracy of 91.14%.
