In this paper, the overall health index of underground cable system is determined using Fuzzy Logic and Scoring and Weighting Average methods. The relevant data of 73 feeders has been collected in the prepared evaluation forms, divided into five major component groups: cable, joint, termination, manhole, and ductbank. In each component, various testing methods and diagnostic techniques are applied, and then the numerical score is determined according to the technical criteria for condition assessment. Subsequently, the obtained overall health index is multiplied with the conditional factor to incorporate the differences in installation type and configuration as well as the operating and environmental conditions. Finally, the overall health index based on these two methods is compared to verify the accuracy of the obtained results to properly plan the preventive and condition-based maintenance and to improve the reliability of the underground cable system. © 2023 IEEE.

Attendance systems have become more modern, and one of the biometric systems without physical contact is face recognition. However, many face-based attendance systems still carry out attendance individually and cannot detect multiple faces simultaneously. In addition, capturing facial data in real-time is still a challenge because the relatively large distance between the camera and the individual reduces the ability to recognize faces. The general solution is to use super-resolution to generate better-quality faces while maintaining the main facial recognition features. One technique still being researched is super-resolution generative adversarial networks (SRGAN). SRGAN can enlarge the resolution of captured images and maintain image quality sufficient for face recognition. The attendance system can be easily integrated into edge devices such as the Jetson Nano. This paper proposes automatic and effective attendance systems with the super-resolution technique to detect and recognize faces in low-resolution input. The experimental results show that using face data capture with a resolution of 40 × 40 pixels and a four-fold magnification results in a resolution of 160 × 160 pixels. Combining Face SRGAN with FaceNet architecture as the basis of face recognition can achieve an accuracy rate of 78.19% and an F1-Score of 81.13% with an average processing time of 1.61 seconds per frame on a PC and 14.55 seconds per frame on a Jetson Nano at an average of face recognition per frame of as many as up to 8 faces simultaneously.

This paper provides an examination of the impact of lightning strikes on a 220 kV double circuit (D/C) high voltage transmission line in Bhutan. The study employs the ATP-EMTP software to identify the leading causes of transmission line faults, which are primarily attributed to lightning strikes. Since the transmission lines run through areas in Bhutan that are prone to severe weather conditions and lightning strikes, they are vulnerable to damage, leading to an unreliable power supply. To address this issue, the author proposes several solutions, such as enhancing the tower footing resistance and installing line surge arresters. The author also created models of different transmission towers and analyzed an 18 km stretch of the transmission line that is highly susceptible to lightning strikes. © 2023 IEEE.

Early recognition of clinical deterioration (CD) has vital importance in patients’ survival from exacerbation or death. Electronic health records (EHRs) data have been widely employed in Early Warning Scores (EWS) to measure CD risk in hospitalized patients. Recently, EHRs data have been utilized in Machine Learning (ML) models to predict mortality and CD. The ML models have shown superior performance in CD prediction compared to EWS. Since EHRs data are structured and tabular, conventional ML models are generally applied to them, and less effort is put into evaluating the artificial neural network’s performance on EHRs data. Thus, in this article, an extremely boosted neural network (XBNet) is used to predict CD, and its performance is compared to eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) and random forest (RF) models. For this purpose, 103,105 samples from thirteen Brazilian hospitals are used to generate the models. Moreover, the principal component analysis (PCA) is employed to verify whether it can improve the adopted models’ performance. The performance of ML models and Modified Early Warning Score (MEWS), an EWS candidate, are evaluated in CD prediction regarding the accuracy, precision, recall, F1-score, and geometric mean (G-mean) metrics in a 10-fold cross-validation approach. Recently, cooking oil has been widely discussed on social media. Many people ask how to analyze this phenomenon, one of which is using a sentiment analysis application on Twitter that performs a scientific analysis of the tweets of this media user. This study aims to test the performance of the sentiment analysis algorithm utilizing the Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT) algorithm from Twitter, which is used to classify the types of tweets processed in 2000 tweets. The study shows the results of the confusion matrix, accuracy, and precision. The study obtained a fairly good accuracy and precision performance of 84%, which occurred at a learning rate of 1e-6 and epoch 5. The author also discusses the factors that affect the performance of BERT, such as;pre-processing, data quantity, and data variation. © 2022 IEEE.

Conveyor belts are commonly used in the mining industry for efficient material transport. However, they are prone to failures such as idler anomalies, belt tears, and misalignment. Current monitoring systems only evaluate the conveyor or idle belt's condition at the installation point. This study proposes a method to detect faults in conveyor belts, specifically idler anomalies and belt deviation, using two IMUs installed at the lateral extremities of the belt to evaluate its health along its route. In a reduced-scale conveyor belt, we conducted experiments by collecting gyroscopes and accelerometer data in various scenarios, including normal conditions and anomaly situations. We modified the idlers' physical structure or changed the belt tracks to create these scenarios. We used similarity analysis techniques to compare the data collected and performed statistical hypothesis analysis to observe the influence of the anomaly scenarios on the gyroscope and accelerometer data. We used Dynamic Time Warping (DTW) for gyroscope data to compare ground truth with anomaly scenarios. For the acceleration data, we performed vibration analysis by converting the time domain data to the frequency using Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) and evaluating the difference in spectral density between the reference and anomaly data. Statistical hypothesis analysis revealed that anomaly scenar-ios influenced the gyroscope x-axis and z-axis more. According to the spectral density analysis of the accelerometer, it was revealed that belt misalignment on the y-axis may be detected. © 2023 IEEE.

The rapid development of Internet of Things (IoT) technology has enabled the widespread deployment of health monitoring systems. Traditionally, the health monitoring system has been limited by centralized processing and storage in the cloud, leading to latency issues and potential data loss. This paper introduces a smart sleep monitoring system based on edge computing, utilizing microservices architecture and caching techniques. The proposed system employs edge computing to enable data processing closer to the source, reducing latency and improving real-time monitoring capabilities. Caching is employed to reduce database load and optimize random access memory (RAM) usage. This research addresses latency and response time challenges on IoT health monitoring platforms in environments with poor network quality while optimizing database load and resource usage on Jetson Nano as the edge computing device. Using Electrocardiogram (ECG) data as input, the proposed system yields impressive performance metrics. The research results indicate that the proposed system can increase throughput by 26.92 KB/s, reduce response time by 18.8 ms, and decrease latency by 20.86 ms compared to the previous work. Message Queuing Telemetry Transport (MQTT) integration reduces CPU usage by approximately 40% and RAM usage by about 81.24%.

Developing an early detection system of obesity is very important to prevent the increase rate of obesity. Infrared thermography (IRT) can be a potential approach to an early detection of obesity. Deep learning (DL) models can interpret thermogram acquired from IRT. However, studies related to DL based on IRT are still few, and access to thermograms datasets is limited. In this article, we aim to: (1) summarize studies on thermal image datasets of obesity and (2) discuss parameters that need to be considered in acquiring and building a thermal image dataset of obesity. A comprehensive online search was performed in different databases, and the inclusion criteria fitted 12 studies. The collected studies are summarized, and the parameters that need to be considered are discussed. The parameters such as participant quantity, participant condition, image quantity, and body region need to be readjusted with the study's objectives. The other parameters, such as participant selection and control parameters, room protocol, and thermal camera settings need to be configured to reduce BAT activation factors during image acquisition. © 2021 IEEE.

Distributed Acoustic Sensors (DAS) are able to measure dynamic strain and temperature signals quantitatively along several kilometers of optical fiber using the properties of backscattering light. A drawback of DAS is the sensing resolution of around 1 meter long. This paper analyses the use of DAS as a vibration sensor for a thin plate structure using an acoustic excitation. A coiled method of arranging the sensing optical fibers enhances the measured signal and using a calibration method, the strain in the sensed region is obtained. The method can be used to characterize structures acoustically allowing the structure to detect the direction and reconstruct nearby acoustic events. Acoustic excitations were performed using a speaker at 1 meter distance to a 1 millimeter thick free-free 40 centimeters by 73 centimeter instrumented stainless steel plate inside an anechoic chamber. Results measured using reference microphones and accelerometers were compared to the optical fiber sensor through a Finite Element Model. The results demonstrate that the optical fiber system is able to measure the frequency response with an average 54 dB sound pressure level sound source chirp signal for flexural modes with a clear differentiation between angles of incidence up to 500 Hz.

The rapid proliferation of Internet of Things (IoT) devices has posed significant challenges for network resource allocation and management. In this paper, we propose a novel methodology for efficient resource allocation in Software-Defined Networks (SDNs) to meet the unique requirements of IoT applications. Our approach leverages the flexibility and programmability of SDN to dynamically allocate network resources based on the specific needs of IoT devices. Our proposal combines reinforcement learning with dynamic resource allocation, demonstrating its effectiveness in optimizing resource allocation and enhancing network performance. The results highlight the potential of our approach to addressing the resource challenges in SDN-based IoT environments. The proposed method obtains results superior to 30% of throughput in comparison to a traditional resource allocation in SDN to IoT applications. © 2023 University of Split, FESB.
