The topological features of optical vortices have been opening opportunities for free-space and on-chip photonic technologies,e.g.,for multiplexed optical communications and robust information *** a parallel but disjoint effort,polar anisotropic van der Waals nanomaterials supporting hyperbolic phonon polaritons(HP2s)have been leveraged to drastically boost light-matter *** far HP2 studies have been mainly focusing on the control of their amplitude and scale *** we report the generation and observation of mid-infrared hyperbolic polariton vortices(HP2Vs)associated with reconfigurable topological ***-shaped gold disks coated with a flake of hexagonal boron nitride are exploited to tailor spin-orbit interactions and realise deeply subwavelength *** complex interplay between excitation spin,spiral geometry and HP2 dispersion enables robust reconfigurability of the associated topological *** results reveal unique opportunities to extend the application of HP2s into topological photonics,quantum information processing by integrating these phenomena with single-photon emitters,robust on-chip optical applications,sensing and nanoparticle manipulation.

Background: To evaluate the effect of the weighting of input imaging combo and ADC threshold on the performance of the U-Net and to find an optimized input imaging combo and ADC threshold in segmenting acute ischemic stroke (AIS) lesion. Methods: This study retrospectively enrolled a total of 212 patients having AIS. Four combos, including ADC-ADC-ADC (AAA), DWI-ADC-ADC (DAA), DWI-DWI-ADC (DDA), and DWI-DWI-DWI (DDD), were used as input images, respectively. Three ADC thresholds including 0.6, 0.8 and 1.8 × 10^–3 mm²/s were applied. Dice similarity coefficient (DSC) was used to evaluate the segmentation performance of U-Nets. Nonparametric Kruskal–Wallis test with Tukey–Kramer post-hoc tests were used for comparison. A p <.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: The DSC significantly varied among different combos of images and different ADC thresholds. Hybrid U-Nets outperformed uniform U-Nets at ADC thresholds of 0.6 × 10^–3 mm²/s and 0.8 × 10^–3 mm²/s (p <.001). The U-Net with imaging combo of DDD had segmentation performance similar to hybrid U-Nets at an ADC threshold of 1.8 × 10^–3 mm²/s (p =.062 to 1). The U-Net using the imaging combo of DAA at the ADC threshold of 0.6 × 10^–3 mm²/s achieved the highest DSC in the segmentation of AIS lesion. Conclusions: The segmentation performance of U-Net for AIS varies among the input imaging combos and ADC thresholds. The U-Net is optimized by choosing the imaging combo of DAA at an ADC threshold of 0.6 × 10^–3 mm²/s in segmentating AIS lesion with highest DSC. Adaptive Environment-Aware Robotic Arm Reaching Based on a Bio-Inspired Neurodynamical Computational Framework

Bio-inspired robotic systems are capable of adaptive learning, scalable control, and efficient information processing. Enabling real-time decision-making for such systems is critical to respond to dynamic changes in the environment. We focus on dynamic target tracking in open areas using a robotic six-degree-of-freedom manipulator with a bird-eye view camera for visual feedback, and by deploying the Neurodynamical Computational Framework (NeuCF). NeuCF is a recently developed bio-inspired model for target tracking based on Dynamic Neural Fields (DNFs) and Stochastic Optimal Control (SOC) theory. It has been trained for reaching actions on a planar surface toward localized visual beacons, and it can re-target or generate stop signals on the fly based on changes in the environment (e.g., a new target has emerged, or an existing one has been removed). We evaluated our system over various target-reaching scenarios. In all experiments, NeuCF had high end-effector positional accuracy, generated smooth trajectories, and provided reduced path lengths compared with a baseline cubic polynomial trajectory generator. In all, the developed system offers a robust and dynamic-aware robotic manipulation approach that affords real-time decision-making. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

In Internet of Things (IoT) applications, data flows are continuous streams of high-dimensional time series that aggregate various data sources. In this context, decision-making processes frequently encompass multiple factors and criteria that demand forecasting these time series. This paper introduces MO-WMVFTS, a novel multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) fuzzy time series (FTS) method for tackling this complex scenario. MO-WMVFTS is a hybrid forecasting method that fuses weighted multivariate FTS (WMVFTS) with embedding transformations, designed for IoT applications. To assess the performance of the proposed method, it was applied to the prediction of energy consumption in smart homes and air quality in smart cities. Here, three real-world datasets are used to assess the validity of our proposed approach, and the results obtained are highly competitive when compared to other existing methods.

Increasing penetration of wind and renewable generation poses significant challenges to the power system operations and reliability. This paper considers the real-time optimal transmission switching (OTS) problem for determining the generation dispatch and network topology that can account for uncertain energy resources. To efficiently solve the resultant two-stage stochastic program, we propose a tractable linear decision rule (LDR) based approximation solution that can eliminate the uncertain variables and lead to fixed number of constraints. The proposed LDR approach can guarantee feasibility, and significantly reduces the computational complexity of existing approaches that grows with the number of randomly generated samples of uncertainty. Numerical studies on IEEE test cases demonstrate the high approximation accuracy of the proposed LDR solution and its computational efficiency for real-time OTS implementations. © 2020 IEEE.

Foreign Exchange market is the world's largest daily currency turnover. Two of the popular currencies Euro and Pound sterling traded against the US Dollar. Since the Russia and Ukraine war started in February 2022, their exchange rates decrease to the lowest rate ever. Even though the general trend is bearish, several daily candles increase for some days making challenges for forex analysts. To solve this problem, classification is applied. The data is labeled downward and upward. By utilizing Linear Kernel and Radial Basis Function (RBF) Kernel-based Support Vector Machines (SVM), the candle direction can be classified and optimized by tuning the Hyperparameters. The accuracy of candle direction classifications are highly improved. After tuning, in general, classification using Linear Models can outperform RBF Models. The best accuracy found on the Pound sterling against US Dollar by using the Linear model is 98.11% and the accuracy becomes 100% on data testing at a ratio of 70:30. Whilst for the Euro against the US Dollar, the best accuracy found the same for both Linear and RBF models on a ratio of 80:20 at 97.53%. However, on data testing, it decreases to 94.51% for Linear Model and 93.41% using RBF Model. The implication of this study is SVM can successfully classify candle direction on pairs in the Forex Market that are affected by a big event that comes for such a long period as long as the hyperparameter is tuned.

The implementation of a simple double-slit for light interference experiments by using just three off-the-shelf, non-optical components is described. Thanks to the simplicity of the assemblage, the distance between the slits and slit width can be easily modified. The device can be used in teaching laboratories for quantitative experiments, as well as in demonstration classes. © 2020 IOP Publishing Ltd.

Analog computing based on wave interactions with metamaterials has been raising significant interest as a low-energy, ultrafast platform to process large amounts of data. Engineered materials can be tailored to impart mathematical operations of choice on the spatial distribution of the impinging signals, but they also require extended footprints and precise large-area fabrication, which may hinder their practical applicability. Here we show that the nonlocal response of a compact scatterer can be engineered to impart operations of choice on arbitrary impinging waves, and even to solve integro-differential equations, whose solution is observed in the scattered fields. The lack of strongly resonant phenomena makes the response robust, and the compact nature opens to scalability and cascading of these processes, paving the way to efficient, compact analog computers based on engineered microstructures.

This paper proposes two three-phase five-level power conversion systems. They can be employed in a wind energy converter system (WECS) application as the machine side rectifier, connected to the permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) by an open-end winding (OEW) arrangement. Compared to the conventional topology, proposed ones lack the use of six clamping diodes in their structures. Even though, they also achieve the same power quality as the conventional one. Besides, proposed configurations may have fewer semiconductor devices in the current path, providing slightly lower power losses. Furthermore, the control system used ensures the synchronization between voltage and current, providing a high power factor operation. The converter equations, pulse-width modulation technique, and control strategy are detailed. Simulation and experimental results are provided in order to confirm their performance and feasibility.

LiDAR detection of long-range vehicles is challenging because very few and sparse points are measured in long distances and vehicles with similar shapes of targets could lead to false positives easily. To tackle these challenges, taking the environment information (HD maps) into account could be beneficial to predetermine where targets are more or less likely to appear. Compared with semantic maps, HD maps formed by point clouds provide much richer information from surrounding static objects and scenes. In this work, we construct a GNN-based feature extraction of point cloud maps to increase the receptive fields of learning map features. Our work is based on PVRCNN, the state-of-the-art LiDAR object detection method. With point-wise and voxel-wise features obtained from PVRCNN, residual feature fusion is proposed to fuse the features from PVRCNN and the map features from GNN. Our approach is evaluated on NuScenes dataset. It achieves a 24.78% average precision improvement for long-range objects at 40–50 meters, the farthest areas with ground truth annotation. Our approach also has a 4.22% reduction of false positives in the entire sensing areas.
