Reporting-Guidelines in Medicine play an important role in promoting the quality of reports in health-related research. For instance, a poorly reported research may induce misinterpretation and inappropriate clinical settings. Basically, three major issues regarding Reporting-Guidelines in Medicine has to be addressed: (1) the existence of lots of reporting guidelines covering a broad spectrum of medical research increases the difficulties when reporting a medical research because it may not be clear which guidelines are applicable, or if all related guidelines are considered;(2) most guideline developers have not described how their guidance was developed, consequently tracking guidelines and features for evaluation, or even for correcting, may be not possible;(3) few guideline developers have evaluated the effectiveness of their guidance, then the real value that the guideline brings to reporting the research is not assured. Hence, we propose a solution to these three issues based on the Model-View-Controller Evolutionary Acquisition Interdisciplinary Research Project Management (MVC EA-IRPM) that is simultaneously a strategy and a web system for the development and management of reporting guidelines. © 2017 IEEE.

PPFIA3 encodes the protein-tyrosine phosphatase, receptor-type, F-polypeptide-interacting-protein-alpha-3 (PPFIA3), which is a member of the LAR-protein-tyrosine phosphatase-interacting-protein (liprin) family involved in synapse formation and function, synaptic vesicle transport, and presynaptic active zone assembly. The protein structure and function are evolutionarily well conserved, but human diseases related to PPFIA3 dysfunction are not yet reported in OMIM. Here, we report 20 individuals with rare PPFIA3 variants (19 heterozygous and 1 compound heterozygous) presenting with developmental delay, intellectual disability, hypotonia, dysmorphisms, microcephaly or macrocephaly, autistic features, and epilepsy with reduced penetrance. Seventeen unique PPFIA3 variants were detected in 18 families. To determine the pathogenicity of PPFIA3 variants in vivo, we generated transgenic fruit flies producing either human wild-type (WT) PPFIA3 or five missense variants using GAL4-UAS targeted gene expression systems. In the fly overexpression assays, we found that the PPFIA3 variants in the region encoding the N-terminal coiled-coil domain exhibited stronger phenotypes compared to those affecting the C-terminal region. In the loss-of-function fly assay, we show that the homozygous loss of fly Liprin-α leads to embryonic lethality. This lethality is partially rescued by the expression of human PPFIA3 WT, suggesting human PPFIA3 function is partially conserved in the fly. However, two of the tested variants failed to rescue the lethality at the larval stage and one variant failed to rescue lethality at the adult stage. Altogether, the human and fruit fly data reveal that the rare PPFIA3 variants are dominant-negative loss-of-function alleles that perturb multiple developmental processes and synapse formation.

In this paper, three configurations of three-phase ac-dc cascaded converters are presented. They are referred as basic configurations, and are composed by two three-phase bridges, where the second bridge is cascaded to the first by means of a three-phase injection transformer. Basic configurations have one bidirectional option (composed only by IGBT switches), and two unidirectional ones (composed by IGBT and diodes). Their generalizations, which are composed by an indefinite number of cascaded three-phase bridges, are also proposed. Each additional cascaded bridge is a three-phase IGBT bridge and requires one additional three-phase injection transformer. Transformers turns ratios are calculated in order to maximize the number of levels produced in the ac side of each rectifier, enhancing power quality. Basic configurations are compared by means of simulations between themselves and with the conventional three-phase IGBT bridge, to show that proposed multilevel rectifiers present better performance in terms of ac power quality drew from the ac source, with lower semiconductor losses. Experimental results are also exposed for the basic configurations to validate them and show their feasibility.

Agent behaviors in simulation systems are related to fundamental capabilities of realistically developing (semi) autonomous navigation actions. This is particularly important when dealing with the implementation of computer Generated Forces (CGFs) for simulation systems in tactical military training applications. Moreover, these systems take into consideration the particularities of the domain-specific simulation tasks and the numerous heterogeneous CGFs inserted on them in order to generate better knowledge and learning experience to simulation system users. Based on these reasons, this paper reviews recurrent navigation problems as to propose a task-oriented and parameterized (semi) autonomous navigation framework to deal with CGF navigation needs in military simulation. Combining global and local navigation techniques, and controlled transition between alternative degrees of navigation autonomy, the framework aims to overcome the challenges of implementing customizable CGF navigation behaviors and, at the same time, to allow interaction with both users and other simulation systems in distributed simulation settings. A case study is presented in which the proposed techniques are analyzed in a domain-specific simulation problem providing evidence of their suitability to address the studied military simulation problems.

Telemedicine offers the ability to provide real-time medical support, education, and care to remote and austere locations under limited bandwidth restrictions. These types of communication channels can easily be overwhelmed and delays or interruptions make communication difficult, if not impossible. These interruptions destroy the temporal orientation of communication resulting in significant cognitive loading. The objective of this research was to lower cognitive load and minimize digital communication bandwidth by developing a priority model from perceptual quality and content focus of telemedical video. H.264/AVC encoding was used to encode two types of medical context with varying bitrates, frame rates, and frame sizes. Telemedical video contexts were room awareness, and medical procedure. Objective quality and subjective quality tests were performed using Structural Similarity (SSIM) and perceptual feedback, respectively. The objective of this research is to develop context specific telemedicine communication models for the highest perceptual quality for available bandwidth for the purpose of increased temporal orientation and decreased cognitive load. Our research presents a method to select the best encoding parameters (maximum bitrate, frame rate and frame size) for the medical context to minimize bandwidth and maintain diagnostic and education quality.

The human visual system employs a mechanism of visual attention, which selects only part of the incoming information for further processing. Through this mechanism, the brain avoids overloading its limited cognitive capacities. In computer vision, this task is usually accomplished through saliency detection, which outputs the regions of an image that are distinctive with respect to its surroundings. This ability is desirable in many technological applications, such as image compression, video quality assessment and content-based image retrieval. In this paper, a saliency detection method based on color distance with sparse random samples and joint upsampling is presented. This approach computes full-resolution saliency maps with short runtime by leveraging both edge-preserving smoothing and joint upsampling capabilities of the Fast Global Smoother. The proposed method is assessed through precision-recall curves, F-measure and average runtime on the MSRA1K dataset. Results show that the method is competitive with state-of-the-art algorithms in both saliency detection accuracy and runtime. © 2016 IEEE.

Image retargeting has seen many applications in areas such as content adaptation for small displays and thumbnailing for image database browsing. Most retargeting methods, however, are too expensive computationally to achieve fast performance on common desktop systems. This work addresses the problem of fast automatic thumbnailing for image browsing. A simple approach of automatic thresholding saliency maps and cropping using bounding box extraction is presented. Eight of the fastest saliency detectors in the literature and three automatic thresholding methods are assessed using precision, recall, F-score and execution time on the MSRA1K dataset. The results show that the approach is computationally efficient and adequate for fast automatic image thumbnailing. In particular, saliency detection with difference to random color samples (RS) thresholded by Rosin's method achieved the best trade-off between execution time and F-score. © 2016 ACM.

Total variation superiorized conjugate gradient method for image reconstruction

The conjugate gradient (CG) method is commonly used for the relatively-rapid solution of least squares problems. In image reconstruction, the problem can be ill-posed and also contaminated by noise;due to this, approaches such as regularization should be utilized. Total variation (TV) is a useful regularization penalty, frequently utilized in image reconstruction for generating images with sharp edges. When a non-quadratic norm is selected for regularization, as is the case for TV, then it is no longer possible to use CG. Nonlinear CG is an alternative, but it does not share the efficiency that CG shows with least squares and methods such as fast iterative shrinkage-thresholding algorithms (FISTA) are preferred for problems with TV norm. A different approach to including prior information is superiorization. In this paper it is shown that the conjugate gradient method can be superiorized. Five different CG variants are proposed, including preconditioned CG. The CG methods superiorized by the total variation norm are presented and their performance in image reconstruction is demonstrated. It is illustrated that some of the proposed variants of the superiorized CG method can produce reconstructions of superior quality to those produced by FISTA and in less computational time, due to the speed of the original CG for least squares problems. In the Appendix we examine the behavior of one of the superiorized CG methods (we call it S-CG);one of its input parameters is a positive number ". It is proved that, for any given " that is greater than the half-squared-residual for the least squares solution, S-CG terminates in a finite number of steps with an output for which the half-squared-residual is less than or equal to ". Importantly, it is also the case that the output will have a lower value of TV than what would be provided by unsuperiorized CG for the same value " of the half-squared residual. This work proposes an efficient approach to recover the mechanical strain profile applied on fibre Bragg grating sensors. The proposed method is based on differential evolution and uses only the sensor reflectivity, without requiring phase information. The method has been shown to be highly parallelisable, with the fitness evaluation procedure implemented on graphical processing units. Experiments were performed to evaluate the performance of the method on three distinct graphic processing units (GPU), under a series of increasing loads. An enhancement up to three orders of magnitude in performance was obtained in respect to other evolutionary method proposed in the literature for the same purpose. Furthermore, it was observed that, for smaller problem sizes, the GPU clock rate was more significant than the number of cores of the GPU. © 2016 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

The transition-metal pentatellurides HfTe5 and ZrTe5 have been studied for their exotic transport properties with much debate over the transport mechanism, band gap, and cause of the resistivity behavior, including a large low-temperature resistivity peak. Single crystals grown by the chemical-vapor-transport method have shown an n−p transition of the Seebeck coefficient at the same temperature as a peak in the resistivity. We show that behavior similar to that of single crystals can be observed in iodine-doped polycrystalline samples but that undoped polycrystalline samples exhibit drastically different properties: they are p type over the entire temperature range. Additionally, the thermal conductivity for polycrystalline samples is much lower, 1.5 Wm−1 K−1, than previously reported for single crystals. It is found that the polycrystalline ZrTe5 system can be modeled as a simple semiconductor with conduction and valence bands both contributing to transport, separated by a band gap of 20 meV. This model demonstrates to first order that a simple two-band model can explain the transition from n- to p-type behavior and the cause of the anomalous resistivity peak. Combined with the experimental data, the two-band model shows that carrier concentration variation is responsible for differences in behavior between samples. Using the two-band model, the thermoelectric performance at different doping levels is predicted, finding zT=0.2 and 0.1 for p and n type, respectively, at 300 K, and zT=0.23 and 0.32 for p and n type at 600 K. Given the reasonably high zT that is comparable in magnitude for both n and p type, a thermoelectric device with a single compound used for both legs is feasible.
