Zinc oxide, a well-known inorganic metal oxide in nanoparticle form, has outstanding antibacterial properties. In this work, the authors focus on determining ZnO nanoparticles’ structural, optical, and antibacterial activity. A simple soft chemical route synthesizes C-ZnO nanoparticles chemically, while the green synthesis method is used to prepare G-ZnO nanoparticles. Ocimum tenuiflorum leaf extract was used to prepare G-ZnO nanopowders. These samples are investigated and compared in terms of their structural, morphological, optical, and antibacterial properties. According to XRD investigations, the synthesized ZnO nanopowders possess a hexagonal structure. The particle size of G-ZnO is smaller than that of C-ZnO nanoparticles. The XPS result revealed the binding and interactions between molecules. The FTIR study confirmed the presence of molecules and their vibrations. UV-vis-DRS spectroscopy was used to investigate optical properties such as reflectance and band gap. The grain size of the G-ZnO nanopowders was decreased, and oxygen vacancy was produced. The antibacterial efficiency of plant extracts against two different bacterial strains, S. aureus (Gram-positive) and *** (Gram-negative), has been studied and reported. Copyright © 2022 K. Cryptogams, as bryophytes and forming-lichen fungi, are the dominant life form covering ice-free areas of Antarctica. Thus, the region is characterized as a less complex model system, being well suited for investigations on the response to environmental change. In this study, lichens have been used as monitoring organisms, as on the one hand they have the ability to survive and grow under extreme environmental conditions, but on the other hand they are extremely sensitive to small environmental changes. Thus, we hypothesized that, as a consequence of environmental change, the lichen-dominated communities located in the Antarctic maritime region would change over time. Here, we used an ecological approach to assess the population dynamics of lichen cover over a period of 9 years. The results were compared with a previous study conducted in 2003-2004 to assess the changes in cryptogamic coverage and composition. In this study, thirty-one lichen species assigned to twenty sites were identified, whereas in the former study, seven lichen species belonging to seven sites were described. In both studies, Usnea spp. turned out to be the most frequent lichen genus, but from the first to the second assessment, the coverage and frequency of Usnea antarctica declined by ∼30%. Our results indicate that terrestrial communities in Antarctica change over time, with an increase in lichen species, a decline in bryophyte species, and a colonisation of new ice-free areas. These alterations may be caused by an observed increase in temperature, associated with glacier melting, and a decrease in precipitation amounts, which seems to affect components of the cryptogamic communities. These ecological changes may influence the microfauna and microbiota associated with cryptogams, suggesting that the composition and distribution of ecosystems in Antarctica may change over the years, which will also affect their role in global biogeochemical cycles. © 2023, The Authors. On the Use of Surfactant for Precursor Solution Processing and Influence on the Properties of Tin Dioxide Thin Films

Tin dioxide (SnO2) thin films have several sorts of applications, including as gas sensors and in photocatalysis, where the surface area plays a relevant role. The use of the Triton X-100 non-ionic surfactant in the precursor solution processing has revealed as a fundamental aid to increase adhesion of the SnO2 film on the substrate. Moreover, the surfactant presence leads to a significant increase in the surface area of deposited thin films, and the roughness (rms) increases from 57.6 nm to 275 nm. The influence can also be observed in the XRD profiles, with a higher degree of crystallinity for Triton deposited films. It also increases the defect density and the electron scattering, leading to rather resistive films which are thermally excited only above room temperature. The activation energy for the defect ionization is rather high, 800 meV, but the thermal excitation takes place at a lower temperature range, compared to films prepared without Triton in the solution processing. The performance on photocatalysis is improved for films prepared with Triton X-100, since most of the methylene blue dye is degraded in the first 90 minutes when interacting with the sample. © 2021, CC BY.

The growing use of synthetic chemical compounds/substances in vector control of mosquitoes, associated with their adverse effects on the environment and non-target organisms, has demanded the development of eco-friendly alternatives. In this context, this study aimed to evaluate the larvicidal action of different cellulose microcrystalline (CMs) concentrations and investigate their toxicity mechanisms in Culex quinquefasciatus fourth instar larvae as a model species. Probit analysis revealed that the median lethal concentrations (LC50) for 24 h and 36 h exposure were 100 and 58.29 mg/L, respectively. We also showed that such concentrations induced a redox imbalance in the larvae, marked by an increase in the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), as well as a reduction in the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT). Furthermore, different alterations in the external morphology of the larvae were associated with the ingestion of CMs. On the other hand, exposure of adult zebrafish (Danio rerio) to LC5024h and LC5036h for seven days did not induce any behavioral changes or alterations mutagenic, genotoxic, biochemical, or in the pro- and anti-inflammatory response. Thus, taken together, our study demonstrates for the first time that the use of CMs can constitute a promising strategy in the control of C. quinquefasciatus larvae, combining insecticidal efficiency with an "eco-friendly" approach in the fight against an important mosquito vector of several human diseases. © 2023, The Authors. The efficacy of content-based image classification is dependent on the richness of the feature vectors extracted from the image data. Traditional feature extraction techniques highlight single low level image characteristics like shape, size, texture, color etc. for feature generation. The process often fails to extract meaningful descriptors since considering a single image characteristic will ignore other rich properties of image contents. Mass adoption of Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) has significantly improved classification performances for content-based image data. Recent literature has documented high level of precision for image classification by carrying out transfer learning with open source pre trained Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). However, the concept of transfer learning experiences major setback in case of limited training data due to overfitting of training instances during finetuning. This work has identified this challenge and has attempted to capture probability distribution of input images to a pre trained Convolution Neural Network by utilizing it as a fixed weight feature extractor. The proposed approach has addressed the overfitting problem by removing the finetuning step involved in transfer learning. Further investigation on robust descriptor definition is carried out by concatenating the pre-trained CNN features to handcrafted features. The hybrid architecture has encouraging outcomes that have outclassed the classification accuracies of state-of-the-art handcrafted techniques. © 2021, Bharati Vidyapeeth's Institute of Computer Applications and Management.

Air pollution in Thailand is regarded as a serious health threat, especially in the northern region. High levels of particulate matter (PM2.5and PM10) are strongly linked to severe health consequences and mortality. This study analyzed the relationship between exposure to ambient concentrations of PM2.5and PM10by using data from the Pollution Control Department of Thailand and the burden of disease due to an increase in the ambient particulate matter concentrations in northern Thailand. This study was conducted using the Life Cycle Assessment methodology considering the human health damage impact category in the ReCiPe 2016 method. The results revealed that the annual average years of life lived with disability from ambient PM2.5in northern Thailand is about 41,372 years, while from PM10it is about 59,064 years per 100,000 population. The number of deaths from lung cancer and cardiopulmonary diseases caused by PM2.5were approximately 0.04% and 0.06% of the population of northern Thailand, respectively. Deaths due to lung cancer and cardiopulmonary diseases caused by PM10, on the other hand, were approximately 0.06% and 0.08%, respectively. The findings expressed the actual severity of the impact of air pollution on human health. It can provide valuable insights for organizations in setting strategies to address air pollution. Organizations can build well-informed strategies and turn them into legal plans by exploiting the study’s findings. This ensures that their efforts to tackle air pollution are successful, in accordance with regulations, and contribute to a healthier, more sustainable future guidelines on appropriate practices of air pollution act/policy linkage with climate change mitigation.

City policies and plans play an important role in promoting physical activity through changes in the urban design and transportation systems. The objectives of this study were to describe longitudinal changes in the built environment relevant to leisure-time physical activity and active travel in Sao Paulo city, Brazil, between 2015 and 2020;to describe these changes according to regions of the city, census tracts’ income, and buffer zones around the residences of participants in a cohort. Using data from public online libraries, cross-checked with the specific municipal and state secretariats, the following were measured: public squares, parks, sports facilities, community clubs, outdoor gyms, bike paths, train or subway stations, bus terminals, and primary health care units. To quantify these attributes around the residences, four different buffers: 500 m and 1000 m radial buffers and 500 m and 1000 m network buffers were adopted. An increase was observed in outdoor gyms (+109.6%), bike paths (+67.7%), train or subway stations, bus terminals (+15.4%), sports facilities (+12.0%), and public squares (+8.7%). However, the changes differed according to the region, census tract income, and residential area. The results can serve to foster a discussion on the effects of local policies being executed. In addition, this study highlights important disparities in cities through the different levels evaluated. © 2022 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

Advanced preparedness for drinking water emergency: Ensuring safe microbial quality with rapid microbial source tracking and E. coli methods

The increasing occurrence of water main breaks attributed to aging water infrastructure and other disaster-related events amplifies the risk of microbial contamination in drinking water. Conventional methods for assessing water quality after waterline disruptions involve using time-consuming fecal indicator culture-based techniques that fail to detect the sources of contamination. Thus, rapid emergency responses are critically needed to safeguard public health and swiftly resume community functioning. This novel study proposes a rapid emergency response method targeting Escherichia coli (E. coli) and microbial source tracking (MST, human (HF183) and universal (UniBac) fecal contamination) following water main breaks to evaluate water safety. Objectives were: develop a rapid method for quantifying fecal microbial contamination using droplet digital PCR (ddPCR), and compare rapid results to culture-based method. Results indicate zero E. coli presence using culture-methods. Conversely, results using rapid-ddPCR method show quantifiable positive detection of E. coli and MST markers (HF183 and UniBac) across various sites, suggesting potential widespread fecal contamination following the main break incident. Results highlight that a rapid molecular E. coli and MST techniques effectively detected fecal contamination in treated drinking water that culture-based methods failed to detect. Notably, the ddPCR method produced sensitive results 18 hours faster than culture-based method, highlighting that MST can be used to simultaneously determine water quality and fecal contamination sources. To our knowledge, this is the first pilot study employing highly specific and sensitive MST methodology in treated drinking water following distribution main break. © 2023 The Authors

This study investigated microplastics (M.P.s) in mostly used commercial sea salts from Bangladesh. The presence of M.P.s in the 18 sea salt bands was 100%, where the mean M.P.s abundance was 471.67 MPs/kg: ranging between 300 to 670 MPs/kg. The maximum number of M.P.s accounted for in the 300-1500 µm size class was significantly higher than the 1500-3000 µm and 3000-5000 µm size class. The most dominant color was black. Fibers and foams were the dominant shapes. The highest number of M.P.s was 41%, obtained from coarse salt grains. Four types of polymers were mainly identified from the analyzed samples: PP, PE, PET, and PA. The mean polymer risk index value among these sea salts was 539 to 1257. The findings of this study can be helpful for consumers, salt industries, and policymakers to be aware of or reduce M.P. contamination levels in sea salts during production and consumption. © 2023, The Authors. Urbanization converts natural lands into anthropogenic-disturbed soils, which can dramatically influence soil biota. However, how urbanization influences patterns of soil biodiversity and the effects on habitat sensible groups, generalist and specialist species, are poorly understood. Here, we examined the responses of diversity and community composition of soil nematodes, the most abundant metazoans on Earth, to several urban land use types (i.e., forests, farmlands, green belts, hospitals, industrials, urban parks, and residential areas) related to urbanization. We found moderate effects of land use and its associated variables on patterns of species richness, but more dramatic changes in the abundance of habitat specialists versus generalists. Specifically, while specialists tended to be reduced, primarily due to an increase in soil pH, generalists were robust to land use changes, buffering the overall effect on the overall nematode diversity. Furthermore, our results showed that human density, as a proxy of urbanization intensity, was linked to changes in soil pH between land use types. Our results suggest that urbanization could influence the community composition of soil nematodes by favoring generalists over specialists. Together, these findings highlight the importance of understanding and considering the ecological consequences of urbanization on soil microfauna specialization in light of the urban land use management. © 2024, The Authors.
