Groundwater vulnerability in karst area Pucung Village, Eromoko, Wonogiri District

Climate change has a negative impact on the reduction of groundwater resource potential in the Gunungsewu Karst Area, in terms of quantity, quality and continuity. This impact is felt by the people of Pucung Village who use water found in underground rivers and springs to meet their daily domestic water needs. The potential of water resources in the area is very vulnerable to a decrease in quality and quantity related to changes in the carrying capacity and capacity of the karst area as a result of climate change. This study aims to assess the groundwater vulnerability zone and the condition of the water catchment area in the karts area of Pucung Village, Eromoko District, Wonogiri Regency, *** research method used is the EPIK method which is applied to the Geographical Information System (GIS). Research variables include (a) Epikarst; (b) Protective Cover; (c) infiltration conditions, and (d) karst network. The four variables obtained from the interpretation of remote sensing images, topographical maps, geological maps and field surveys were analyzed using scoring techniques. The results showed (1) 875.15 hectare or 88% of the area in Pucung Village is in a zone that is very vulnerable and susceptible to contamination of Groundwater; (2) agricultural activities in the water catchment area have the potential to contaminate of groundwater in the study area.

Background: Metal oxide nanomaterials are increasingly being exploited in cancer therapy thanks to their unique properties, which can enhance the efficacy of current cancer therapies. However, the nanotoxicity and mechanism of Ti0.8O2 nanosheets for specific site-targeting strategies in NSCLC have not yet been investigated. Methods: The effects of Ti0.8O2 nanosheets on cytotoxicity in NSCLC cells and normal cells were examined. The apoptosis characteristics, including condensed and fragmented nuclei, as assessed by positive staining with annexin V. The cellular uptake of the nanosheets and the induction of stress fiber were assessed via transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses, respectively. We also evaluated the expression of protein in death mechanism to identify the molecular mechanisms behind the toxicity of these cells. We investigated the relationship between S-nitrosylation and the increase in p53 stability by molecular dynamics. Results: Ti0.8O2 nanosheets caused cytotoxicity in several lung cancer cells, but not in normal cells. The nanosheets could enter lung cancer cells and exert an apoptosis induction. Results for protein analysis further indicated the activation of p53, increased Bax, decreased Bcl-2 and Mcl-1, and activation of caspase-3. The nanosheets also exhibited a substantial apoptosis effect in drug-resistant metastatic primary lung cancer cells, and it was found that the potency of the nanosheets was dramatically higher than that of cisplatin and etoposide. In terms of their mechanism of action, we found that the mode of apoptosis induction was through the generation of cellular ONOO− mediated the S-nitrosylation of p53 at C182. Molecular dynamics analysis further showed that the S-nitrosylation of one C182 stabilized the p53 dimer. The doping process of TiO₂ using a combination method, sol-gel and hydrothermal, has been conducted. The presence of anatase and rutile phase of TiO₂ and doped TiO₂ has been confirmed using UV-DRS, XRD, Raman spectroscopy, and EPR. The Nitrogen-doped TiO₂ (N-TiO₂) showed the highest photoactivity in the powder form than the as-prepared TiO₂ (rutile), anatase and Vanadium-doped TiO₂ (V-TiO₂). The influence of pH during the preparation of N-TiO₂ showed that pH gives a big effect to the morphology and photoactivity of the photocatalyst. The N-TiO₂ at pH 2 showed higher photoactivity than N-TiO₂ at pH 4 and it also showed a fine morphology. The N-TiO₂ also showed the highest photoactivity when it was immobilized in the DPNR matrix. After being immobilized, the photoactivity of the as-prepared photocatalyst was decreased to be 0–30%. © 2019, © 2019 The Author(s). Standard notions of an “Earthlike” planet rely solely on physical and material properties, like planetary mass, radius, and surface temperature. Here, we introduce a novel, relational perspective on what defines “Earthlikeness.” In our process-based framework, rocky planets are local pockets of free energy that have the potential to drive the emergence of dynamically persistent systems that coevolve with one another. Examples of dynamically persistent planetary phenomena include magnetic dynamos, mantle convection, tectonic regimes, deep volatile cycles, global climate feedbacks, biogeochemical cycles, and the biosphere. When two or more processes couple to one another such that they gain causal efficacy over one another's persistence, some degree of planetary-scale homeostasis may emerge. In astrobiology, Earthlike exoplanets are often considered to be priority targets for the search for life elsewhere. We suggest that a process-based framework for Earthlikeness has the potential to widen our search space and inspire novel planetary-scale biosignatures, or “Gaiasignatures,” that may be essential for detecting exoplanetary biospheres. Additionally, a process-based view of life can influence the development of agnostic biosignatures at all scales. In contrast to the dominant scientific perspective, which has tended to engender a materialistic worldview, relational ontologies may contribute to our scientific understanding of Earth as a network of dynamically persistent systems, humanity as an integral part of nature, and the search for life in the universe. Analysis of delay factors on drilling projects on PT China Oilfields Services Limited

In carrying out drilling projects at PT China Oilfields Services Limited ( COSL) Indo, especially Project 1 to Project 4, there were a mismatch between the initial plan of the project and the actualisation in the field because there were inhibiting factors in implementing the project. The purpose of the research was to look the factors that caused for the additional time in well drilling project at PT. COSL Indo, to build a relationship model of these factors, and formulate a strategy for the company to be able to overcome the occurrence of additional time in the future project. Data analysis was conducted by using a factor analysis method and the location of the research was carried out in just one company with 102 valid respondents. The results of the research indicate that there are four factors that influence the time gap, namely Project Management Activities, Risk Analysis and Procurement, Manage Stairs, and Project Planning Development. By knowing the causes of the delay, companies can find the best solutions for future learning and the impact on environmental, social and economic problems can also be anticipated so that sustainable development occurs in the context of petroleum management.

Plastic pollution is a widespread issue that poses a threat to agroecosystems. Recent data on microplastic (MP) pollution from compost and its application to soil have highlighted the potential impact of micropollutants that may be transferred from compost. Thus, we aim with this review to elucidate the distribution-occurrence, characterization, fate/transport, and potential risk of MPs from organic compost to gain comprehensive knowledge and mitigate the adverse impacts of compost application. The concentration of MPs in compost was up to thousands of items/kg. Among micropollutants, fibers, fragments, and films are the most common, with small MPs having a higher potential to absorb other pollutants and cause harm to organisms. Various synthetic polymers, including polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polystyrene (PS), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polyester (PES), and acrylic polymers (AP), have been widely used of plastic items. MPs are emerging pollutants that can have diverse effects on soil ecosystems, as they can transfer potential pollutants from MPs to compost and then to the soil. Following the microbial degradation scheme, the transfer chain from plastics to compost to soil can be broken down into main stages, i.e., colonization - (bio)fragmentation - assimilation - and mineralization. Microorganisms and adding biochar play an essential role during composting, which can be an effective solution to enhance MP degradation. Findings have shown that stimulating free radical generation could promote the biodegradation efficacy of MPs and possibly remove their occurrence in compost, thereby reducing their contribution to ecosystem pollution. Furthermore, future recommendations were discussed to reduce ecosystem risks and health challenges.

Transdisciplinary research has been put forward as a means to foster a radical shift in traditional scientific paradigms by promoting knowledge democracy while tackling wicked problems. This paper analyses how local social-ecological dynamics and institutional realities affect the way in which transdisciplinary research generates knowledge and develops sustainability pathways in diverse marine and coastal conflict contexts. Drawing on a cross-case analysis from a multicountry Belmont Forum project, namely OceansPact, this research analyzes key lessons on transdisciplinary practice. This analysis is informed by online surveys, semi-structured interviews with scholars and focus group discussions with non-academic stakeholders involved in the OceansPact. The paper demonstrates that transdisciplinary approaches can foster conflict transformation. Nonetheless, the results highlight that context-specific factors, including trust-building strategies and institutional cultures, significantly shape the processes of knowledge co-production and linking knowledge to transformative action. This study hence emphasize the need of flexible approaches, instead of standardized frameworks, that accommodate these diverse contexts and power dynamics, warning against reductionist approaches that oversimplify complexity. Emphasizing the political nature of transdisciplinarity, this paper calls for mechanisms that mitigate power asymmetries in transdisciplinary spaces. This paper moreover underscores the urgent need of systemic changes in academic institutions to support long-term, equitable collaboration between scholars and non-academic stakeholders, as well as of a shared understanding of transdisciplinary research so that this model can drive positive transformation.

Modified Synthesis and Physicochemical Characterization of a Bioglass-Based Composite for Guided Bone Regeneration

Objectives. Bioglass composites and polymers are materials of great interest for the medical and dental areas due to their properties, combining the bioactivity of ceramic materials and the mechanical properties of polymers. The purpose of the present study was to develop and to characterize the physicochemical and morphological properties an experimental bioglass-based ternary composite composed associated with sodium carboxymethylcellulose (Na-CMC) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). The compatibility of functional groups with bioglass was previously evaluated. The composite was then synthesized and evaluated in terms of morphology, elemental composition, compressive strength, porosity, and bioactivity. Materials and Methods. The bioglass was previously synthesized using a sol-gel route and characterized using FTIR analysis to identify the functional groups. The bone graft composite was then synthesized associating the bioglass with PVA, surfactant Triton X, and Na-CMC. The composite was then morphologically characterized using SEM/EDS. The porosity of the composite was analyzed using μCT, which also provided the composite compression strength. The composite was then evaluated in terms of its bioactivity using SEM/EDS analyses after immersion in SBF for 12, 24, 48, and 72 h. Results. FTIR analysis confirmed, among other components, the presence of Si-O-Ca and Si-O-Si bonds, compatible with bioglass. SEM analysis exhibited a composite with a porous structure without spikes. The elemental mapping confirmed the presence of Si, Ca, and P in the composite. μCT analysis demonstrated a porous structure with 42.67% of open pores and an average compression strength of 124.7 MPa. It has also demonstrated ionic changes in the composite surface after immersion in SBF, with increasing detection of Ca and P as a function of time, highlighting its chemical bioactivity. BACKGROUND/PURPOSE:Multi-drug resistance and the presence of epidemic lineages of Neisseria gonorrhoeae locally and globally were important clinical and public health issues. We aimed to investigate the molecular epidemiology and the antimicrobial susceptibility profiles of N. gonorrhoeae in Southern Taiwan. METHODS:Between 2019 and 2021, adult patients who had suspected gonorrhea and attended a urology clinic in southern Taiwan were recruited to participate in this study. Clinical data from medical records and a questionnaire, antimicrobial susceptibility testing using a disk diffusion test in accordance with the guidelines by the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute, and Multi-locus sequence typing (MLST) were analyzed. RESULTS:A total of 500 patients participated in the surveillance study. Among them, 232 N. gonorrhoeae isolates were identified, but only 164 isolates were recovered for further research. ST7363 (n = 83, 50.61%) was found to be the predominant sequence type, followed by ST1583 (n = 24, 14.63%), ST1588 (n = 13, 7.93%), and ST7827 (n = 12, 7.32%). 100% resistance to penicillin and 99.4% non-susceptible rate of ciprofloxacin were observed. The azithromycin resistant rate being 15.24% and the cefixime non-susceptible rate being 17.07% were alarming, both with decreasing trends in susceptibilities during 2019-2021. The 25 azithromycin resistant isolates were mainly belonged to ST7363 (n = 12) and ST7827 (n = 3). Seven (4.2%) isolates were ceftriaxone non-susceptible. Among them, four were assigned to be ST 7827 and three belonged to ST7363. CONCLUSION:We observed the emergence of a predominant sequence type ST7363 in southern Taiwan. Compared with previous Taiwan studies, the increasing trend of resistance to cefixime and ceftriaxone necessitates clinicians' alertness for clinical treatment response of the extended spectrum cephalosporins and the further surveillance monitor.

Background: Telomeres are protein complexes located at the top of each arm of chromosomes, essential for maintaining the stability of the genome. Telomere shortening is found in physiological aging and senescence-related to systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Objectives: To compare the relative telomere length (TL) in patients with SLE and controls and to correlate the TL with clinical characteristics, treatments, disease activity, and damage. Methods: A cross-sectional study comparing SLE patients and controls, from 18 to 60 years old, matched by sex and age. Clinical and demographic data from all participants were collected, and relative TL by qPCR. For cases, previous and current history, disease activity, damage, cognitive assessment, fatigue, presence of depression, anxiety, stress symptoms, and physical activity were analyzed. Results were obtained using frequencies and percentages for qualitative characteristics and measures of central tendency and standard deviation for quantitative ones. Comparisons of relative TL and other variables were performed using the t-Student test when assumptions of normality and homoscedasticity were satisfied and the Mann-Whitney test otherwise. A significance level of 5% was considered. Results: Sixty SLE patients and 55 controls were included. Among patients, 75% were diagnosed in adulthood; 86.7% were female (mean age 37 years); 15% had antiphospholipid syndrome (APS), 51.7% had a previous history of nephritis, and 23.3% had neuropsychiatric involvement. Among controls, 87.3% were female (mean age 38 years). There was no difference between groups regarding sex and age (p=0.924 and p=0.737, respectively). SLE patients had a median relative TL of 0.80 versus 1.07 in the control group (p=0.005). In the multiple regression model (R 2 =18.4%), patients with anxiety symptoms in a moderate grade had lower TL (p=0.015) when compared to patients without or with low-grade anxiety symptoms.
