BL Lacertae (BL Lac) is one of the low-frequency peaked BL Lac object (LBL). Since August 2020, BL Lac has shown a historically high activity in HE (high-energy, 0.1 GeV 100 GeV) gamma-ray range, BL Lac was detected in several nights during an especially bright flare simultaneous with a HE flare. In the long-term light curves, X-ray and HE gamma-ray flux overall show correlation, but sometimes only HE gamma-ray was bright. These multi-wavelength (MWL) correlations may relate to the emission mechanisms and the origin of the observed flaring activity. In this contribution we will present some of the preliminary results on the MWL campaign of BL Lac in September 2020, with a focus on the X-ray and gamma-ray activity, based on the data collected by Swift-XRT, MAGIC and Fermi-LAT telescopes. © Copyright owned by the author(s) under the terms of the Creative Commons.

The increasing prevalence of multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii as an opportunistic pathogen in wound infections raises significant concerns due to its antibiotic resistance and biofilm-mediated antibiotic tolerance. This underscores the urgent need to explore an alternative approach to effectively managing wound infections caused by MDR A. baumannii. In this study, combining subinhibitory concentrations of curcumin (25 µg/ml) or chitosan (156 µg/ml) with photodynamic therapy-PDT (10 J/cm²) resulted in a significant reduction of planktonic viabilities and biofilm biovolume of MDR A. baumannii clinical isolates in vitro. In murine A. baumannii-associated wound infection, a combination of curcumin (25 µg/ml) or chitosan (156 µg/ml) with PDT (10 J/cm²) resulted in complete bacterial eradication with wound healing at Day 15 of post-treatments with these combination therapies. Our study demonstrated that combining curcumin or chitosan with PDT at their subinhibitory concentrations represents a promising alternative strategy as localized therapy for effectively managing A. baumannii-associated wound infection. © 2025 The Authors

The recent Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) sets ambitious goals but no clear pathway for how zero loss of important biodiversity areas and halting human-induced extinction of threatened species will be achieved. We assembled a multi-taxa tracking dataset (11 million geopositions from 15,845 tracked individuals across 121 species) to provide a global assessment of space use of highly mobile marine megafauna, showing that 63% of the area that they cover is used 80% of the time as important migratory corridors or residence areas. The GBF 30% threshold (Target 3) will be insufficient for marine megafauna's effective conservation, leaving important areas exposed to major anthropogenic threats. Coupling area protection with mitigation strategies (e.g., fishing regulation, wildlife-traffic separation) will be essential to reach international goals and conserve biodiversity.

Comparison of the effectiveness electrocoagulation of dye (batik waste water) using iron and zinc as an anodes

This study aims to obtain dye (batik waste water) treatment by electrocoagulation with optimal results. The performance of electrocoagulation process was carried out in batch reactor. Four variables were taken which thought to greatly influence the electrocoagulation process, such as: distance between electrodes, voltage, acidity (pH) and electrolysis time. In this process, samples of 20 mL were taken out from the batch at 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45 dan 50 minutes of contact time. Results obtained show that the most effective removal efficiency could be achieved at alkaline condition. Research that has been done shows that the percentage of wastewater treatment results is strongly influenced by the four variable changes. The study demonstrated that the lowest degradation efficiency occours at acid pH, while an increase temperature has only a slight effect on the electrocoagulation process. The maximum results from the electrocoagulation processes was obtained, with determine by measurement of chemical oxygen demand (COD). The results showed that, iron is better used as an anode than zinc. The effectiveness electrocoagulation reached optimal at 96.54% (at Fe anode) and 81.65% (at Zn anode), at alkaline condition (pH > 9), electrolysis time of 30 minutes, electrode distance of 1 cm and temperature at 70°C.

Novae are luminous explosions in close binaries which host a white dwarf and a companion donor star. They are triggered by a thermonuclear runaway when the white dwarf accretes a critical amount of matter from the secondary. Though novae are established as high-energy gamma-ray emitters through observations by the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT), the origin of the gamma-ray emission, whether it is hadronic or leptonic, had been under intense debate until very recently. RS Ophiuchi (RS Oph) is a well-known recurrent symbiotic nova with a recurrence time scale of 15 years. The most recent outburst of RS Oph in 2021 brought the first detection of very-high-energy (VHE) gamma rays from a nova ever. The first Large-Sized Telescope prototype (LST-1) of the Cherenkov Telescope Array observed this historic event along with H.E.S.S. and MAGIC. The LST-1 observations in the first days after the burst onset show a clear VHE gamma-ray signal from RS Oph. The low energy threshold of LST-1 allows us to reconstruct the RS Oph gamma-ray spectrum down to ∼30 GeV, providing the best connection of the VHE gamma-ray data to the Fermi LAT energy range. The results from the analysis of the LST-1 observations are consistent with those obtained with H.E.S.S. and MAGIC, and also support a hadronic origin for the observed gamma-ray fluxes. Formaldehyde is a ubiquitous contaminant in the indoor environment that is both a carcinogen and irritant. The goal of this project is to develop a smartphone-based app for use by citizen scientists or researchers that can be paired with low-cost colorimetric badges for detection of indoor formaldehyde. We conducted both national and geographically-targeted surveys prior to app design. We have subsequently developed the app and conducted a beta test. Surveys of 147 individuals indicated broad public interest in formaldehyde testing using smartphone technology. Testing of the badges indicated consistent change in illumination with increasing formaldehyde exposure. Beta testing indicated users were able to navigate the existing app, and highlighted areas for improvement including incorporation of public surveys. Global efforts to mitigate climate change emphasize the critical need to reduce atmospheric CO₂ levels and enhance carbon sinks. Mangrove ecosystems, renowned for their substantial carbon sequestration capacity, play a vital role in sequestering significant amounts of carbon. This review explores carbon fluxes in mangrove ecosystems, emphasizing autochthonous and allochthonous carbon sequestration mechanisms. Specifically, it discusses the pathways through which carbon is absorbed and stored, including biological productivity, sediment accumulation, and carbonate precipitation. Furthermore, the role of microbial communities and root systems in carbon stabilization, nutrient cycling, and methane oxidation is also examined, highlighting their significance in enhancing sequestration efficiency. Moreover, this study evaluates the factors influencing carbon sequestration efficiency in mangroves and the methods used for its quantification. Finally, this review assesses the contribution of mangroves to the global carbon budget, emphasizing their strategic role in offsetting atmospheric CO 2 and enhancing coastal ecosystem resilience. However, significant research gaps remain in understanding the mechanism of carbon transformation, the interaction between diverse carbon sources, sediment dynamics, and long-term stability of buried organic matter across varying mangrove settings.

Luwak coffee is one of the Indonesia traditional coffee that known globally because of its unique aroma and flavor. Luwak coffee was produced by a fermentation process in luwak digestion by involving microbe that can be found in luwak digestion. Luwak coffee fermentation process using luwak animal has many weakness such as inefficient production processes, and final product quality that always makes consumers hesitate in terms of its hygiene and halal. Therefore some research to produce coffee with the quality of luwak coffee without using luwak began to be developed. Several methods of fermentation to produce coffee with quality luwak coffee are discussed in this paper, such as fermentation by in vitro technique

Molecular phylogeny and postharvest morphology of petals in two major Nelumbo nucifera cultivars in Thailand

Nelumbo nucifera is a symbolic flower of Buddhism and widely used for decoration in Asia. In most cases its buds are used as cut-flowers, which usually do not open and the outer petals turn black, leading to loss of visual quality and thus decreasing their economic value in markets. In Thailand, two major cultivars, Sattabongkot and Saddhabutra, are used and exported to foreign countries. To investigate the difference between these two cultivars, their molecular phylogeny and postharvest morphology were examined. Using 25 simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers, the cultivar Saddhabutra was very close to the cultivar Satabuto. These results showed a high bootstrap (BS) value of 96%. In contrast, lotus cultivars in Thailand including Sattabongkot and Saddhabutra, showed a BS value of 90%. Saddhabutra and Satabuto are classified in the same group with high similarity, whereas Sattabongkot shows relatively lower similarity. Petal blackening started earlier in Saddhabutra than Sattabongkot, indicating a vase-life difference among cultivars, with Sattabongkot and Saddhabutra having a vase life of 72 and 54 h, respectively. The epidermal cells of normal petals of Sattabongkot and Saddhabutra showed freshness and a round shape with turgid cells. The petal blackening was accompanied with a reduction of the area and perimeter in both cultivars. Sattabongkot had fewer stomata than Saddhabutra. The study provided a molecular classification of the Thailand lotus cultivars and provides a useful technique for the quantification of the postharvest quality of lotus cultivars. © 2018 Kasetsart University
