In this paper a model based on transport equations is proposed to study the weldability of low alloy ferritic steels T/P23 and T/P24. The model was numerically implemented by using the finite volume method (FVM) in an open source computational code to simulate the influence of the heat input, base metal thickness and preheating temperature on the thermal evolution and the cooling rate during the welding process. Meanwhile, it was possible to evaluate qualitatively the microstructure at the heat affected zone (HAZ) of these steels when a single weld bead was deposited on their surface and calculate the maximum hardness reached at this region. A double-ellipsoid heat source model for power density distribution was used in order to obtain a good estimate of the cooling rate and evolution of the fusion zone (FZ). The results are discussed and good agreement between experimental and simulated results was obtained for temperature distribution.

This paper presents a new code compression method where we use different dictionaries, all of them are based in traditional Huffman algorithm. Our method reduces code size by up to 34.5% (including all extra costs) and presents an improvement of almost 7% over the traditional Huffman method. We performed simulations using Simple Scalar and analyzes using the applications from benchmark MiBench and use the embedded processor ARM.

New records and molecular characterization of Acrozoanthus (Cnidaria: Anthozoa: Hexacorallia) and its endosymbionts (Symbiodinium spp.) from Taiwan

During a recent survey of the zoanthid (Cnidaria: Anthozoa) fauna of Taiwan, specimens resembling Acrozoanthus australiae (family Zoanthidae) were found at Kenting and Green Island, Taiwan, attached to eunicid worm tubes growing out from under large Porites coral colonies in coral reef environments. As this species had previously been described only from eunicid worm tubes in mud flats in Australia and Indonesia, and no studies had specifically examined its phylogenetic position, molecular and morphological examinations were conducted to determine the identity of the Taiwan specimens, and its phylogenetic relationships with other Zoanthidae genera and species. At the same time, endosymbiotic Symbiodinium types within specimens were also investigated. Results from the phylogenetic analyses of sequences of three DNA markers [cytochrome oxidase subunit I, mitochondrial 16S ribosomal DNA, internal transcribed spacer 2 of ribosomal DNA (ITS-2)] strongly suggested that the Taiwan specimens were identical with A. australiae. Based on endosymbiont ITS-2 sequences, these colonies were in symbiosis with Symbiodinium clade D1a (= S. trenchii), theorized to be adapted to both comparatively cold and hot marine environments. Furthermore, phylogenetic analyses from all three zoanthid DNA markers suggest that Acrozoanthus may be within the closely related genus Zoanthus. This study demonstrates the overall lack of data on zoanthid species' distributions, and it is recommended the diversity of zoanthids within the nearby Coral Triangle be investigated to link Indo-Australian zoanthid data with information from Japan and the northwest Pacific. © 2010 Senckenberg, Gesellschaft für Naturforschung and Springer.

Cells offer natural examples of highly efficient networks of nanomachines. Accordingly, both intracellular and intercellular communication mechanisms in nature are looked to as a source of inspiration and instruction for engineered nanocommunication. Harnessing biological functionality in this manner requires an interdisciplinary approach that integrates systems biology, synthetic biology, and nanofabrication. Here, we present a model system that exemplifies the synergism between these realms of research. We propose a synthetic gene network for operation in a nanofabricated cell mimic array that propagates a biomolecular signal over long distances using the phenomenon of stochastic resonance. Our system consists of a bacterial quorum sensing signal molecule, a bistable genetic switch triggered by this signal, and an array of nanofabricated cell mimic wells that contain the genetic system. An optimal level of noise in the system helps to propagate a time-varying AHL signal over long distances through the array of mimics. This noise level is determined both by the system volume and by the parameters of the genetic network. Our proposed genetically driven stochastic resonance system serves as a testbed for exploring the potential harnessing of gene expression noise to aid in the transmission of a time-varying molecular signal. © 2011.

It was with great excitement that we planned the combined meetings of Northeast Aquaculture Conference and Exposition (NACE) and the International Conference on Shellfish Restoration (ICSR) with the 33rd Milford Aquaculture Seminar (MAS). Bringing these different but complementary audiences together resulted in a meeting that combined many different aspects of fisheries restoration and aquaculture under one *** hundred attendees including government representatives, research scientists, industry, and academia at both the university and vocational high school levels attended this event. The meeting commenced on Wednesday December 12th 2012, with over eighty people attending seven field trips to area aquaculture farms and research facilities. The formal program began on Thursday, December 13th with a plenary session including invited speakers Eric Schwabb, Acting Assistant Secretary for Conservation and Management at NOAA; Sebastian Belle, Executive Director of the Maine Aquaculture Association and Boze Hancock from the Nature Conservancy, who discussed the role of aquaculture in fisheries restoration. John Bullard, the Northeast Regional Administrator of NOAA Fisheries Service, addressed the group during the luncheon the following day. The technical papers and workshops presented were divided into 35 sessions over three days of the meeting and included topics such as the history of aquaculture, aquaculture hatchery innovations, siting and planning issues, risk management, aquaculture business management, ocean acidification, climate change, as well as aquaculture disease issues and potential remedies. Having persons present who have experienced problems and successes, along with those in manufacturing and government responsible for addressing concerns and sharing best practices, was invaluable. Discussions among this cross-section of persons who represent different aspects of aquaculture were as important as the well-presented and interesting formal papers

The aim of this research was to study the metal elements in marine bivalve mollusk from coastal marine waters of the Gulf of Thailand focusing on metals in Paphia undulate shell for biomarkers. Energy Dispersive X-Ray Fluorescence (EDXRF) spectrometer was used to determine the composition of mineral and levels of the metals gold (Au), zinc (Zn), lead (Pb), copper (Cu), iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn) but cannot detect the chromium (Cr) element. The results show that the highest accumulated metals are Fe, Mn, Zn, Cr, Au and Pb, respectively. The shell samples were prepared in powder form and annealed at specific temperatures over the range of 200 °C - 300 °C. The effects of heat treatment on the Paphia undulate shell samples were examined using ESR spectroscopy. The result show that, the structures of Paphia undulate shell and Mn2 + paramagnetic ions present in the sample at different annealing temperatures have changes of those ions upon heating.

Most underwater images are post-processed to look pleasing to human viewers. This often results in unrealistically saturated colors. Images taken for the purpose of studying color-sensitive topics such as marine animal coloration, must represent colors as accurately as possible and should not be arbitrarily enhanced. This first requires a transformation of colors from the camera color space to a device independent space. In this paper we present a method for transforming raw camera-RGB colors to a device independent space, optimizing this transformation for a particular underwater habitat. We have conducted an extensive study of the variation of color appearance underwater at a dive site in the Aegean Sea by taking 21 sets of spectrometry and irradiance readings with corresponding photographs of four different color standards. Spectral and photographic data were collected in the presence of natural daylight at various depths and under different weather conditions. In addition to the color charts, we have built a “habitat chart” to optimize this camera-specific transformation for a given dive site.
