Yoga and mental health among Brazilian practitioners during COVID-19:An internet-based cross-sectional survey

This study aimed to describe yoga practice and verify its association with depression,anxiety,and stress during the COVID-19 pandemic among Brazilian practitioners.A cross-sectional anonymous online survey was conducted in all regions of Brazil using a snowball sampling strategy among yoga practitioners.A total of 860 participants(87%female,aged:19–82 years)completed the *** data,lifestyle factors,yoga practice during the pandemic,and the Depression Anxiety and Stress Scale(DASS-21)scores were collected between July 9 and July 15,***,9.5%,9.3%,and 5.6%of participants exhibited some traits(mild to severe)of depression,anxiety,and stress,*** yoga(48%)was the most commonly practiced yoga *** the adjusted analysis,a higher yoga experience(>5 years)was associated with better anxiety(odds ratio;bootstrap 95%confidence interval:2.42;1.32,4.49)and stress status(1.80;1.06,3.00)than beginners(<1 year).Practitioners who reported higher time and days of yoga practice during the study period were more likely to show normal levels of depression(odds ratio:2.56–6.49;p<0.05),anxiety(odds ratio:3.68–8.84;p<0.05),and stress(odds ratio:2.15–5.21;p<0.05).Moreover,the maintenance of practice frequency during the pandemic was associated with higher odds of normal levels of depression(2.27;1.39–3.79),anxiety(1.97;1.25–3.10),and stress(1.97;1.32–2.96).In conclusion,our findings indicated that a higher level of yoga practice was associated with better mental health levels during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Social distancing(SD)to prevent SARS-CoV-2(COVID-19)transmission reduced practices of physical activities(PA)and changed emotional conditions,but the relationship between PA and the emotions has to be further *** study aimed to analyze PA and the intensity of basic emotions during a period of social distancing in the State of S~ao Paulo,*** collection was performed using the snowball system and an online survey with questions about the minimum weekly frequency of 30-min moderate and/or vigorous activities(MVPA),intensity of basic emotions,and sociodemographic profile.A total of 704 volunteers participated;mean age 38.113.4 years,67.9%female,82.0%insufficiently practiced MVPA,and 37.9%of the group reported no weekly ***/fear was the emotion with the highest intensity in the study period.A significant association was observed between PA and intensity of happiness(rho=0.125;p<0.01)and a negative association between PA practice and intensity of anxiety/fear(rho=-0.090;p<0.05),sadness(rho=-0.134;p<0.01),and anger(rho?0.109;p<0.01).Also,an association was observed between anxiety/fear and social isolation(rho=0.082;p<0.05).These results suggest that public policies offering PA programs and psychological care are required to improve the quality of life of the population.

Effects of multicomponent training based on RPE on functional capacity and body composition in institutionalized elderly undergoing physiotherapeutic treatment: A randomized controlled clinical trial

The aim of the current study was to verify the effects of adding multicomponent training based on the rate of perceived exertion (RPE) on physical functional capacity and body composition in institutionalized older adults undergoing physiotherapeutic treatment. Twenty-three older people (12♀) were randomly allocated in blocks, according to their classification level in the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB), into a control group (CG, n = 11) and a multicomponent training group (MT, n = 12). The primary outcome measures were evaluated by the SPPB. Secondary outcomes were performance in the TUG test and 6-meter walking speed test, and body composition analysis. For all analyses, we used ANOVA two way with Bonferroni correction, and estimation statistics, which focus on the effect size of the experiment/intervention, as opposed to significance testing. Regarding the effect size (Cohen's D) in the intergroup analysis, the SPPB score showed a large effect favoring the multicomponent training group ( d = 0.803 [CI 95.0 % -0.387, 1.89]; p = 0.0996). Similar responses were observed for the 6 m walking speed test, showing a large effect ( d = -0.857 [CI 95.0 % - 1.53, 0.176]; p = 0.768), and TUG ( d = -1.18 [CI 95.0 % -2.08, -0.206]; p = 0.0254. In the Body composition outcomes, the phase angle ( d = 0.212 [CI 95.0 % -0.721. 1.17]; p = 0.616) and appendicular skeletal muscle mass ( d = -0.242 [CI 95.0 % -1.15.0.659]; p = 0.56) showed a small effect size. The current study demonstrated that the multicomponent training program associated with the physiotherapy program produces effects that can increase SPPB scores, as well improving physiotherapy performance.

Background: Treated or coated sutures promise to prevent contamination of wounds. Purpose: The purpose of the study was to coat surgical sutures with a new quaternary ammonium silane (QAS) antimicrobial compound at two different application temperatures and then to evaluate the resulting structural, physical, mechanical, and biological properties. Study Design, Setting, Sample: In vitro and in vivo studies were conducted using male albino Wistar rats approved by the Joint Ethical Committee of IMU and postgraduate Medical Institute, Lahore. Only suture samples, coated uniformly with verified presence of the compound and of adequate length were used. Samples which were not coated uniformly and with inadequate length or damaged were excluded. Predictor Variable: Predictor variables were sutures with and without QAS coatings and different temperatures. Sutures were coated with QAS at 0.5 and 1.0% wt/vol using the dip coating technique and sutures with and without QAS coating were tested at 25 and 40 °C temperatures. Main Outcome Variable(s): Outcome variables of structural and physico-mechanical properties of QAS-coated and non-coated sutures were measured using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (for structural changes), confocal laser and scanning electron (for diameter changes), and tensile strength/modulus (for mechanical testing). Biologic outcome variables were tested (bacterial viability);macrophage cultures from Wistar rats were tested (M1/M2 polarization detecting IL-6 and IL-10). Macrophage cells were analyzed with CD80+ (M1) and CD163+ (M2). Chemotaxis index was calculated as a ratio of quantitative fluorescence of cells. Covariates: Not applicable. BackgroundThe intrinsic capacity of the older adults is intertwined with the ability to perform activities of daily living independently and autonomously. The World Health Organization suggests that handgrip strength is an important measure of intrinsic ability. The measure of muscle strength decreases with advancing age and this measure is considered a low-cost and reliable predictor of declines in intrinsic capacity, morbidity, and mortality. ObjectivesTo evaluate the effects of an intervention protocol based on multimodal physical exercises, at moderate intensity, simultaneously with cognitive stimulation (dual-task), on upper limbs muscle strength in community-dwelling healthy older adults. Methods37 older adults, with no cognitive dysfunction, participated in the study. Participants were grouped into a Dual Task Exercise group (DTEx, n=23) and performed 24 sessions, twice a week, for 75 minutes, and a control group (CG, n=14) who received information on health education and did not perform physical exercises. To evaluate the muscle strength of the upper limbs, the handgrip test was used using a hydraulic dynamometer (Jamar®). Two-way repeated measures ANOVA was used for analysis hand grip strength and Bonferroni tests were used as post-hoc for within-group and between-group comparisons. The project was registered in the Brazilian Registry of Clinical Trials (UTN code: U1111-1233-6349). ResultsThere was an interaction Group x Time for the handgrip strength, both for muscle strength on the right side (F (1.35) = 8.013 p ≤ 0.008, η2p = 0.186) and left side (F (1, 35) = 9.055, p ≤ 0.005, η2p = 0.206). After the intervention, the DTEx group showed greater handgrip strength on the right side (Assessment: 20.4 ± 1.4 kgf; Reassessment: 24.5 ± 1.2 kgf, p ≤ 0.001) and on the left side (Assessment: 18.3 ± 1.3 kgf; Reassessment: 22.2 ± 1.2 kgf; p ≤ 0.003). Any reliable biomarker has to be specific, generalizable, and reproducible across individuals and contexts. The exact values of such a biomarker must represent similar health states in different individuals and at different times within the same individual to result in the minimum possible false-positive and false-negative rates. The application of standard cut-off points and risk scores across populations hinges upon the assumption of such generalizability. Such generalizability, in turn, hinges upon this condition that the phenomenon investigated by current statistical methods is ergodic, i.e., its statistical measures converge over individuals and time within the finite limit of observations. However, emerging evidence indicates that biological processes abound with non-ergodicity, threatening this generalizability. Here, we present a solution for how to make generalizable inferences by deriving ergodic descriptions of non-ergodic phenomena. For this aim, we proposed capturing the origin of ergodicity-breaking in many biological processes: cascade dynamics. To assess our hypotheses, we embraced the challenge of identifying reliable biomarkers for heart disease and stroke, which, despite being the leading cause of death worldwide and decades of research, lacks reliable biomarkers and risk stratification tools. We showed that raw R-R interval data and its common descriptors based on mean and variance are non-ergodic and non-specific. On the other hand, the cascade-dynamical descriptors, the Hurst exponent encoding linear temporal correlations, and multifractal nonlinearity encoding nonlinear interactions across scales described the non-ergodic heart rate variability ergodically and were specific. This study inaugurates applying the critical concept of ergodicity in discovering and applying digital biomarkers of health and disease. © 2023, CC BY-NC-ND.

The aim of the current overview was to present the existing literature on the recent phenomenon of eSports. Using a multifaceted approach, we focused on its definitions, historical development, and classification, drawing attention to key disputes that exist between scholars. Furthermore, we investigated the debate on whether eSports should be considered a traditional sport or not, with a particular interest in two processes that have contributed to eSports’ development as a culturally-significant addition to the world of sports, as both a game and an occupation: sportification and professionalization. Lastly, we analysed studies on spectatorship and consumption to understand why people watch and play eSports pointing out data about the recent relationship between practice and the possible development of eSport's addiction, gambling, and the related impact on individual health and wellbeing. © 2022
