Yoga and mental health among Brazilian practitioners during COVID-19:An internet-based cross-sectional survey

This study aimed to describe yoga practice and verify its association with depression,anxiety,and stress during the COVID-19 pandemic among Brazilian practitioners.A cross-sectional anonymous online survey was conducted in all regions of Brazil using a snowball sampling strategy among yoga practitioners.A total of 860 participants(87%female,aged:19–82 years)completed the *** data,lifestyle factors,yoga practice during the pandemic,and the Depression Anxiety and Stress Scale(DASS-21)scores were collected between July 9 and July 15,***,9.5%,9.3%,and 5.6%of participants exhibited some traits(mild to severe)of depression,anxiety,and stress,*** yoga(48%)was the most commonly practiced yoga *** the adjusted analysis,a higher yoga experience(>5 years)was associated with better anxiety(odds ratio;bootstrap 95%confidence interval:2.42;1.32,4.49)and stress status(1.80;1.06,3.00)than beginners(<1 year).Practitioners who reported higher time and days of yoga practice during the study period were more likely to show normal levels of depression(odds ratio:2.56–6.49;p<0.05),anxiety(odds ratio:3.68–8.84;p<0.05),and stress(odds ratio:2.15–5.21;p<0.05).Moreover,the maintenance of practice frequency during the pandemic was associated with higher odds of normal levels of depression(2.27;1.39–3.79),anxiety(1.97;1.25–3.10),and stress(1.97;1.32–2.96).In conclusion,our findings indicated that a higher level of yoga practice was associated with better mental health levels during the COVID-19 pandemic.

This study evaluated the influence of three-dimensional shoulder positioning on internal (IR) and external (ER) rotator muscle strength. Ten young adults were tested at full IR, full ER, and three interpolated angles between these extremes, across two arm elevation positions (45° and 90° in the scapular plane). Maximal torque and optimal angles for IR and ER were determined using second-order polynomial regression. We hypothesized that the optimal angles for IR and ER torque production do not coincide, and that the ERlIR torque ratio peaks at the optimal ER angle and reaches its minimum at the optimal IR angle in both positions. Additionally, we expected that arm elevation would influence torque ratios. The results showed a 30° difference between the optimal IR and ER angles, with significant differences in ERlIR ratios (p = 0.012) exclusively in the 45° elevation position. However, no significant differences in ERlIR ratios were found between the optimal IR angle and full ER, or between the optimal ER angle and full IR (p > 0.315) in either position. IR torque at the optimal IR angle was significantly higher in the 45° elevation position (median = 34.3 Nm) compared to the 90° elevation position (median = 31.3 Nm;p = 0.027). Despite this, arm elevation in the scapular plane did not significantly affect ERlIR ratios at any tested angle (p > 0.105). These findings suggest that ERlIR torque ratios are relatively stable across different shoulder configurations and are largely independent of arm elevation. © 2024 IEEE.

Background:Hemodialysis(HD) per se is a risk factor for *** the growing body of evidence on blood-flow restriction(BFR) exercise in HD patients,identification of possible risk factors related to the prothrombotic agent D-dimer is required for the safety and feasibility of this training *** aim of the present study was to identify risk factors associated with higher D-dimer levels and to determine the acute effect of resistance exercise(RE) with BFR on this ***:Two hundred and six HD patients volunteered for this study(all with a glomerular filtration rate of <15 mL/min/1.73 m2).The RE+BFR session consisted of 50% arterial occlusion pressure during 50 min sessions of HD(intradialytic exercise).RE repetitions included concentric and eccentric lifting phases(each lasting 2 s) and were supervised by a strength and conditioning ***:Several variables were associated with elevated levels of D-dimer,including higher blood glucose,citrate use,recent cardiovascular events,recent intercurrents,higher inflammatory status,catheter as vascular access,older patients(>70 years old),and HD ***,RE+BFR significantly increases D-dimer after 4 *** with borderline baseline D-dimer levels(400-490 ng/mL) displayed increased risk of elevating D-dimer over the normal range(≥500 ng/mL).Conclusion:These results identified factors associated with a heightened prothrombotic state and may assist in the screening process for HD patients who wish to undergo RE+BFR.D-dimer and/or other fibrinolysis factors should be assessed at baseline and throughout the protocol as a precautionary measure to maximize safety during RE+BFR.

Association between reduced lung function, hydration and nutritional status in patients on hemodialysis: An observational study using bioelectrical impedance vector analysis (BIVA)

Background & aims This study aimed to determine the lung function and to investigate the association between pulmonary parameters, hydration, and nutritional status – assessed by bioelectrical impedance vector analysis (BIVA) – in patients on HD. Methods A cross-sectional study, including patients with CKD on HD, age >18 years. Laboratory data, lung function and body composition by bioimpedance were evaluated. Results The sample consisted of 42 participants, 23 (55%) male and age 54±14 years. Reduced lung function was prevalent in 30 (71%) participants, and compared to those with preserved lung function, they had higher dialysis vintage, lower body weight, body mass index, adipose tissue mass and fat tissue. Regarding hydration status and bioimpedance parameters, participants with reduced lung function had significant difference in the variable overhydration (OH) ( P = 0.034). OH, phase angle (PhA) and reactance (Xc) correlated with forced vital capacity (FVC) and forced expiratory volume in 1 st second (FEV 1 ). Regarding BIVA, the mean vector of patients with reduced lung function indicated hyperhydration and malnutrition and the mean vector of preserved lung function indicated normohydration and adequate nutritional status. The multivariate logistic regression analysis to determine predictors of reduced lung function showed that OH was significantly associated with this condition. Conclusions Participants with reduced lung function had lower weight, body mass index, fat tissue and hyperhydration, consequently, bioimpedance parameters (OH, PhA and Xc) were correlated with respiratory variables. Fluid status was a predictor of reduced lung function in patients on HD.

Social distancing(SD)to prevent SARS-CoV-2(COVID-19)transmission reduced practices of physical activities(PA)and changed emotional conditions,but the relationship between PA and the emotions has to be further *** study aimed to analyze PA and the intensity of basic emotions during a period of social distancing in the State of S~ao Paulo,*** collection was performed using the snowball system and an online survey with questions about the minimum weekly frequency of 30-min moderate and/or vigorous activities(MVPA),intensity of basic emotions,and sociodemographic profile.A total of 704 volunteers participated;mean age 38.113.4 years,67.9%female,82.0%insufficiently practiced MVPA,and 37.9%of the group reported no weekly ***/fear was the emotion with the highest intensity in the study period.A significant association was observed between PA and intensity of happiness(rho=0.125;p<0.01)and a negative association between PA practice and intensity of anxiety/fear(rho=-0.090;p<0.05),sadness(rho=-0.134;p<0.01),and anger(rho?0.109;p<0.01).Also,an association was observed between anxiety/fear and social isolation(rho=0.082;p<0.05).These results suggest that public policies offering PA programs and psychological care are required to improve the quality of life of the population.

Background:There is a growing interest to understand the neurobiological mechanisms that drive the positive associations of physical activity and fitness with measures of cognitive *** better understand those mechanisms,several studies have employed eye-based measures(e.g., eye movement measures such as saccades,pupillary measures such as pupil dilation,and vascular measures such as retinal vessel diameter)deemed to be proxies for specific neurobiological ***,there is currently no systematic review providing a comprehensive overview of these studies in the field of exercise-cognition ***,this review aimed to address that gap in the ***:To identify eligible studies,we searched 5 electronic databases on October 23,*** researchers independently extracted data and assessed the risk of bias using a modified version of the Tool for the assEssment of Study qualiTy and reporting in EXercise(TESTEX scale,for interventional studies) and the critical appraisal tool from the Joanna Briggs Institute(for cross-sectional studies).Results:Our systematic review(n=35 studies) offers the following main findings:(a) there is insufficient evidence available to draw solid conclusions concerning gaze-fixation-based measures;(b) the evidence that pupillometric measures,which are a proxy for the noradrenergic system,can explain the positive effect of acute exercise and cardiorespiratory fitness on cognitive performance is mixed;(c) physical training-or fitness-related changes of the cerebrovascular system(operationalized via changes in retinal vasculature) are,in general,positively associated with cognitive performance improvements;(d) acute and chronic physical exercises show a positive effect based on an oculomotor-based measure function(operationalized via antisaccade tasks);and(e) the positive association between cardiorespiratory fitness and cognitive performance is partly mediated by the dopaminergic system(operationalized via spo

Background: Treated or coated sutures promise to prevent contamination of wounds. Purpose: The purpose of the study was to coat surgical sutures with a new quaternary ammonium silane (QAS) antimicrobial compound at two different application temperatures and then to evaluate the resulting structural, physical, mechanical, and biological properties. Study Design, Setting, Sample: In vitro and in vivo studies were conducted using male albino Wistar rats approved by the Joint Ethical Committee of IMU and postgraduate Medical Institute, Lahore. Only suture samples, coated uniformly with verified presence of the compound and of adequate length were used. Samples which were not coated uniformly and with inadequate length or damaged were excluded. Predictor Variable: Predictor variables were sutures with and without QAS coatings and different temperatures. Sutures were coated with QAS at 0.5 and 1.0% wt/vol using the dip coating technique and sutures with and without QAS coating were tested at 25 and 40 °C temperatures. Main Outcome Variable(s): Outcome variables of structural and physico-mechanical properties of QAS-coated and non-coated sutures were measured using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (for structural changes), confocal laser and scanning electron (for diameter changes), and tensile strength/modulus (for mechanical testing). Biologic outcome variables were tested (bacterial viability);macrophage cultures from Wistar rats were tested (M1/M2 polarization detecting IL-6 and IL-10). Macrophage cells were analyzed with CD80+ (M1) and CD163+ (M2). Chemotaxis index was calculated as a ratio of quantitative fluorescence of cells. Covariates: Not applicable. Analyses: Ordinal data among groups were compared using the Wilcoxon Mann-Whitney U test along with the comparison of histological analysis using the Wilcoxon Sign-rank test (P < .05).
