Ship recycling at the end of its useful life presents significant environmental and health challenges due to the presence of hazardous materials, such as asbestos and synthetic vitreous fibers (SVFs). This study aimed to convert SVFs and asbestos into safe, reusable co-products by incorporating them into a glassy matrix. The materials were melted at 1200 °C for 1 h with utilization of niobium pentoxide (Nb2O5) to lower fusion temperatures. Samples collected from an offshore vessel and platform being recycled in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, were analyzed using energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), revealing the presence of SVFs but not asbestos. Seven types of glass were produced, with their non-crystalline, glassy nature confirmed by the presence of an amorphous halo in X-ray diffraction (XRD) and a glass transition observed in differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). These findings demonstrate the potential to transform hazardous waste into value-added products, advancing a circular economy in ship recycling operations. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature 2025.

Statistical trends of rainfall (annual and seasonal rainfalls) in Kerala, India were characterised using the 44-years (1980–2023) data of Modern-Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Applications (MERRA) version 2. Monthly rainfall data were collected from the selected fifty locations which represent the state as a whole, and the collected data were then categorised into annual as well as seasonal (winter, summer, monsoon and post-monsoon) datasets based on the classification proposed by Indian Meteorological Organisation (IMD). Lag-1 autocorrelation, modified Mann Kendall (mMK), Pettitt test and Theil-Sen’s slope methods were used to determine the statistical characteristics of rainfalls in Kerala. Mean rainfalls were 3124 mm, 66 mm, 527 mm, 1667 mm and 862 mm, respectively, for annual, winter, summer, monsoon and post-monsoon periods. mMK based statistical trend analysis revealed an overall decreasing trend characteristics in annual (-0.54 mm.y⁻¹), monsoon (-1.20 mm.y⁻¹), and post-monsoon (-0.93 mm.y⁻¹) seasons whereas winter and summer rainfalls showed an increasing trend (0.67 mm.y⁻¹ and 3.40 mm.y⁻¹, respectively) for the state as a single unit. Pettitt test indicated four dominant periods of change in rainfall characteristics in the study area that spanned over the decades of 1980, 1990, 2000 and 2010, in which major changes in annual and seasonal rainfalls were occurred during 1990’s, 2000’s and 2010’s. Theil-Sen’s slope-based estimation of rate of change in rainfall showed an average variation of -4.33 mm.y⁻¹, 0.17 mm.y⁻¹, 6.27 mm.y⁻¹, -6.54 mm.y⁻¹ and − 3.28 mm.y⁻¹ for annual, winter, summer, monsoon and post-monsoon seasons, respectively. Linking agro-industrial engineering body of knowledge with industry 4.0: A case study of agro-industrial engineering study program at IPB University

The emergence of Industry 4.0 paradigms has been forcing and changing the landscape aspect of engineering education, as seen in agro-industrial engineering body of knowledge (AIEBoK). These paradigms push to adapt and to prepare a new approach for curriculum content and delivery. It is urgent to re-think and redefine how to prepare a newer perspective into the three combined disciplines that form AIE-BoK, namely industrial and system engineering, process/bioprocess engineering, and industrial environmental engineering. They should clearly intertwine their relevance in parallel with pillars of the industry 4.0. These stakeholder's requirements are the main motivation of this work. Within Industry 4.0 vision, AIE-BoK is investigated on how disruptive technologies play a role in changes. Some issues related to how to utilize common connectivity in technology advancement and to push a relevant curriculum both content and structure are discussed. In order to construct a new map and landscape of curriculum relevancy, it continues with the discussion of how and where agro-industrial engineering education attempts to interpret new roles in industrial revolution 4.0. Along with the consideration of how this interpretation potentially changes agro-industrial products, services, and manufacturing. In closing, a discussion of how agro-industrial engineering curriculum should respond is briefly discussed.

The objective of this work is to compare the augmented neural network (AugNN) metaheuristic to minimum bin slack (MBS) heuristic to solve combinatorial optimisation problems, specifically, in this case, the one-dimensional bin packing problem (1D-BPP), a class of cutting and packing problems (CPP). CPP are easily found among various industry sectors and its proper treatment can improve the use of stocks in cutting problems or optimise physical space in packing problems. In order to optimise AugNN parameters, a design of experiment (DOE) was applied in order to guide a statistical analysis of different configurations of AugNN. The tests, developed in many benchmark problems found in the literature, showed that MBS heuristic was, in general superior, both in terms of the solution quality, which is about 70% better, and computational time, which is about 90% less. This study aimed to optimize the ultrasound-assisted extraction of phenolic compounds from the bagasse of umbu-cajá (Spondias bahiensis), a native Brazilian fruit, and to assess their bioaccessibility. Additionally, the influence of different concentrations of the umbu-cajá bagasse (SBB) extract on the oxidative stability of pre-cooked goat meatballs was investigated over a 10-day refrigerated storage period by quantifying lipid oxidation products. A central composite rotational design determined the optimal ethanol concentration, sonication time, and bagasse-solvent ratio. The optimized extract was applied to meatballs at two concentrations: EX2 (meatballs with 7.0 g/100 g of added SBB extract) and EX4 (meatballs with 13.7 g/100 g of added SBB extract). A control treatment (no antioxidant) and BHT-treated meatballs (0.02 g/100 g) were included as references. Meatballs were evaluated by measuring instrumental color, peroxide value, TBARS, carbonyl compounds, and through simulated digestion. Optimal extraction conditions were 55 % ethanol, 20 min of sonication, and a 1:36.8 bagasse-to-solvent ratio (m/v). The extract showed high antioxidant activity and bioaccessibility of catechin (1243.75 %), epicatechin gallate (918.75 %), procyanidins B2 (915.38 %), gallic acid (319.76 %) and procyanidins B1 (136.36 %). SBB extract slowed lipid oxidation until day 10 and protein oxidation until day 5 but did not inhibit color change. The meatballs had low content of oxidative compounds and high antioxidant capacity in the intestinal fraction, indicating that SBB extract can partially or totally replace the synthetic preservative. © 2025

Prosthesis can be seen as a complex product and its project requires a formal method to consistent development. In this research, the main objective is to determine a feasible method for the creation of virtual models of anatomic human prosthesis. The work presents a conceptual model based on digital images applied in 3D reconstruction of computed tomography scans. The proposed method uses an automatic way based on genetic algorithm to build the virtual models to bone geometry. The CAD system can be used to build the geometric models in preparing to prosthesis generation by the production viewpoint. The problem of open contour is addressed. A case study to fill a missing area in skull is used to demonstrate the process. The work involves some technologies as CAD modeling, image processing and artificial intelligence algorithms that can be applied together in order to obtain a virtual model to prosthesis conception.

The need for collaboration across companies and across areas in the same company is a reality that systems, people and other stakeholders must deal with it. When there is sharing of information, communication among entities, interaction and integration, progress occurs and, all these components working together can improve enterprise performance. As the need of these 'inter operations' is real, the interoperability is becoming a key factor for companies facing with collaborative-cooperative environments. Enterprise Interoperability Assessment (EIA) provides a company the opportunity to know their strengths, weaknesses and prioritize actions to improve its performance and maturity. This paper presents concepts regarding Enterprise Interoperability focusing in EIA, including some existing models and establishing relationship with CMMI, a reference adopted worldwide, in order to identify common perspectives.

This paper addresses the problem of the geometric modeling of prosthesis to correct defects in skull bone by computational approach viewpoint. The missing area in a defective skull can be virtually filled by a criterion based on the curvature of the skull shape. The basic argument is that in a computed tomography, the 2D skull border in slice image is similar to a rounded form. This research is proposing a method to find adjusted ellipses on its curvature by Ellipse Adjustment Algorithm(EAA) technique. If the ellipse is correctly adjusted in each computed tomography slice, the resulting arcs that fill the missing area can be built in 3D in order to complete an unknown region in the bone. The problem is that there are many possible solutions and the selection of the best ellipse that fits the contour shape is performed by a Genetic Algorithm(GA). The piece of bone that was missed in skull can be built as a synthetic image to fill a hole at defect position in the skull. With the ellipse parameters it is possible to generate profiles with its set of points in order to build the 3D model using a CAD system. The case study shows the use of the method applied to non-symmetric defects and presents the obtained results.
