Heavy metals are the most hazardous water pollutants, with severe health and environmental consequences. Among these, mercuric (Hg²⁺) ions are known to cause detrimental health issues in both humans and aquatic life. Due to this, several analytical techniques have been devised to detect and quantify the amount of this ion. However, most of these require advanced instrumentation, prolonged analysis time, and sample preparation. In this study, a low-cost and highly reusable colorimetric probe was developed by grafting porphyrin to poly(ethylene terephthalate) sheets using an oxazoline polymer as covalent adhesive. Upon exposure to trace amounts of Hg²⁺ in solution, the fabricated material visually transitioned from faint brownish pink to green by the complexation mechanism. Additionally, the transparency of this probe allowed the quantitative spectrophotometric determination of the Hg²⁺ concentration in aqueous samples. It was also shown that the material is highly stable, which can be reused for more than 50 times without significant decline in its performance, hence, making it suitable for the onsite monitoring of mercuric ion contamination in different bodies of water. © 2024 The Authors. All the partial thermodynamic quantities, including the activity and activity coefficient of tin, a_Sn and γ_Sn, in the liquid Bi-Sn alloys between 300 °C and 500 °C are assessed in detail from electromotive force (emf) data. The emf values were obtained from a modified molten salt electrolyte concentration cell that had extraordinary stability within +0.005 mV. The composition dependence of γ_Sn did not follow Darken's quadratic formalism, nor did the alloy behave as a regular solution. The excess partial quantities, Δ-H_Sn, Δ-S_Sn^xs, and Δ-G_Sn^xs, are oscillating across the composition, and the activity curve exhibits double, positive and negative, deviations from Raoult's law. The a_Sn, γ_Sn, and Δ-G_Sn^xs change from positive to negative departure from ideality in the tin-rich region beyond about x_Sn = 0.82. All those partial quantities and γ_Sn^o, including the β° (the α function of tin) at infinite dilution, are determined accurately by means of Chiotti's method. © 1990 The Minerals, Metals & Material Society.

Lithium-ion batteries (LIB) have developed into the mainstream power source of energy storage devices due to their advantages: high power density, high power, long service life, and less pollution. This materials development for LFP batteries was considered successful in synthesizing powder. Here we show that three synthesis conditions were performed. LFP doped NiO, NMC, and (NH4)2HPO4 were synthesized by the nitrogen gas flow method. LFP-doped NiO was burned at 600 °C and 700 °C for five h. NMC doped with LFP burned at 550 °C for five h, and NMC-doped LFP and (NH4)2HPO4 were burned at 550 °C and 600 °C for five h. The structure and morphology of the material were examined by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). © 2022

EAF dust recycling has become necessary, specially, due to Environment Agencies Regulations to final disposition of such waste. One of the alternatives for it's recycling is the addition in concrete pavement. However, this addition retards this beginning of the hydration reactions of the cement, which retardation does not permit its use. This retardation is attributed to the contained zinc in the EAF dust. This element is present in the EAF dust as two compounds, franklinite (FeZn2O4) and zincite (ZnO). This work has the aim to study the phenomena related to the retardation of the beginning of hydration reactions, caused by the addition of ZnO into cement paste. 10 wt% of ZnO were added to cement pastes. The samples with and without ZnO were analyzed via Scanning Electron microscopy (SEM) e X-Ray Diffraction in different ages to evaluate the phenomena occurred during the hydration of the cement pastes.

Double-double (DD) lay-up is a new configuration strategy for the design of composite laminates, which allows the use of simplified stacking sequences that leads to potential advantages, such as improved manufacturability and design optimization, as compared to traditional quadriaxial laminates (Quad), which are limited to ply angles of 0°, ±45° and 90°. With the double-double concept, through-the-thickness homogenization is facilitated using thinner sub-laminates and, consequently, profile optimization through thickness tapering becomes possible. In this work, damages after impact and after CAI tests of a double-double laminate (+50/0/-50/0)10 and a hard conventional laminate of equivalent in-plane stiffness (03/90/±45/02/±45)2S are compared. According to the data presented, maximum delaminated areas were of the same order of magnitude for the quad and for the DD laminates, under both conditions: after impact and after CAI tests. The results contribute to the understanding of potential benefits of the double-double concept to damage resistance and damage tolerance of composite laminates. © 2023 International Committee on Composite materials. The present study investigates the behavior of the sintering and micro-hardness of stainless steel samples reinforced with nanoparticles of tantalum carbide (TaC). The main aim was to identify the effect of the dispersion of carbides over the microstructure and the mechanical properties of the compacts. Samples of AISI 316L pure and with the addition of 3% wt TaC were cold compacted in a cylindrical steel die (Ø = 5.0 mm) at 700 MPa and sintered in a vacuum furnace. The heating rate and sintering temperature used were 20°C/min and 1290°C respectively during 60 minutes. The results show that the carbides distribution increases the sintering kinetics and micro-hardness of the samples. We have been able to produce sintered samples with a relative density between 91.0% and 93.0%. The highest micro-hardness values using a 10N load were 115 HV for the reinforced sample and 76 HV for the sample without reinforcement.

The impact of film thickness and annealing temperature on the structural, electrical, magnetic, and mechanical properties of cobalt–iron–dysprosium (Co40Fe40Dy20 ) thin films deposited on Si(100) substrates have been investigated. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis confirmed the film's crystalline microstructure, featuring dysprosium oxide, Dy2O3(440), and cobalt oxide, Co2O3(422) and Co2O3(511), crystallographic phases. Surface energy measurements indicated a noticeable reduction in surface energy following annealing treatments, which could be ascribed to the alleviation of residual stress and enhanced atomic arrangement, resulting in a more stable film structure with reduced surface energy. The film exhibited a decreasing trend in hardness with increasing thickness, and film resistivity was significantly responsive to alterations in thickness and annealing temperature. Notably, the Co40Fe40Dy20 film demonstrated exceptional characteristics, featuring a high saturation magnetization (Ms) of 675 emu/cm3 and a low coercivity (Hc) of 9.5 Oe. Further analysis of magnetic domains and hysteresis loops revealed that larger and brighter domains were associated with higher Hc. To sum up, the surface roughness of CoFeDy films under various annealing temperatures played a pivotal role in shaping their magnetic, electrical, adhesive, and optical characteristics. An improved low-frequency alternating current magnetic susceptibility (χac) value was achieved by minimizing the pinning effect on domain walls through surface smoothing. Moreover, smoother surfaces displayed heightened carrier conductivity, resulting in a decrease in electrical resistance. On the whole, Co40Fe40Dy20 films exhibited outstanding soft magnetic properties, encompassing high saturation magnetization, low coercivity, exceptional mechanical attributes, and decreased surface energy. Macroporous open-celled ceramic foams finds applications in numerous technological fields, like particle filters, insulating coatings, porous support for catalyst and photocatalyst processes, and even photoelectrochemical applications. In latter two, a macroporous open cell structure favors photoelectrochemical and photocatalyst reactions, due to its higher surface area. Many methods are used for producing these types of ceramics, specially the replica technique. In this simple method, the samples are obtained by impregnating a highly porous polymeric foam with a high solid loading ceramic slurry. After thermal treatment, the macroporous ceramic presents the structure of the polymeric foam used as template. Exceptionally complex and regular geometries can also be found in nature, which is the case of the Luffa sp sponge, that can replace the use of synthetic polymeric foams. In this work, microwave sinterability of porous ceramics obtained by impregnation of high solid loading ceramic slurries of nanostructured zinc oxide in natural Luffa sp fibrous sponges. Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), xanthan gum (XG) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) were assessed as binder agents. Ceramic slurries were prepared by dispersing nanostructured zinc oxide in distilled water (70% wt. ratio) using ammonium polyacrilate (APA) as deflocculant, followed by mixing in a high shear mixer (IKA Ultra-Turrax T25) for 10 minutes. After homogenization, binders were added and mixed in mechanical mixer for 10 minutes. The sponges (with dimensions of 2x2x1 cm) were carefully immersed in the ceramic slurry, squeezed to remove excess and then left to dry 24h in air. The dried ceramic foams were microwave heated at 550 °C during 10 minutes with 100 °C/min heating rate, followed by microwave sintering at 1150 and 1200 °C during 15 minutes with a 100 °C/min heating rate. The added value of the information transmitted in a cybernetic environment has resulted in a sophisticated malicious actions scenario aimed at data exfiltration. In situations with advanced actors, like APTs, such actions use obfuscation techniques of harmful activities as persistence assurance on strategic targets. The MADEX and NERD architectures proposed flow analysis solutions to detect rootkits that hide network traffic;however, it presents some operational cost, either in traffic volume or due to lack of aggregated information. In that regard, this work changes and improves user flow analysis techniques to eliminate impacts on network traffic, with data enrichment on local and remote bases, detection of domains consulted by rootkits and aggregation of information to generate threat intelligence, while maintaining high performance. The results show the possibility of aggregating information to data flows used by rootkits in order to have effective cyber defense actions against cybernetic threats without major impacts on the existing network infrastructure. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
