The antibacterial and biological properties of silver-loated coralline hydroxyapatite (Ag-CHA) as a new antibacterial implant material were investigated in this study. Compared to other antibiotic and chemical bactericidal agents, Ag+ does not bring bacterial resistance to drugs and has less toxicity. The porous CHA was formed by hydrothermal exchange, then Ag+ was loated onto CHA through ion exchange and adsorption. The microstructure and composition of Ag-CHA were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (RBS), and energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS). Antibacterial activity of Ag-CHA on the clinical strains of Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) was evaluated by the flat plate diffusion method. The antibacterial activity of Ag-CHA was found to be correlated with the concentration of Ag+ in a dose-dependent manner, which indicated that the optimal antibacterial and biocompatible effects of Ag-CHA could be obtained with Ag+ concentrations from 5×10-5to 1×10-4mol/L.

The stable dispersion of quantum dot nanoparticles (QD) in aqueous solution using polymers containing poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) segment was investigated. It was found that using PEG/poly(2-N,N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) (PEG-b-PAMA) enables stabilization of QD in aqueous phase. The photochemical characteristics of the PEG-modified QD were found to be almost same as unmodified QD. It was observed that as he PEG/PAMA block copolymer-modified QDs possess PEG tethered chains on the surface, it is highly dispersion stable in aqueous media and also showed non-fouling character.

This paper shows the building of an embedded Asterisk platform as a key technique for providing Information Technology classes with an extra laboratorial environment for learning Voice over Internet Protocol. Besides building the platform, the students are asked to mount a functional telephony system with it that meets the criteria of low cost, low building complexity and high adaptability to convergent networks. The Raspberry PI version B was the board used to provide portability for the students to work outside the laboratory environment. Asterisk was presented as a useful tool on which the students could create a flexible system that could be easily deployed on convergent networks. This work was developed in the Telephony subject for the Electrical engineering and the Telecommunications Systems undergraduate courses from the Federal Institute of Education, science and Technology of Paraíba - IFPB, and presented good results in the students' learning achievements.

The spin Seebeck effect (SSE) is sensitive to thermally driven magnetic excitations in magnetic insulators. Vanadium dioxide in its insulating low-temperature phase is expected to lack magnetic degrees of freedom, as vanadium atoms are thought to form singlets upon dimerization of the vanadium chains. Instead, we find a paramagnetic SSE response in VO2 films that grows as the temperature decreases below 50 K. The field and temperature-dependent SSE voltage is qualitatively consistent with a general model of paramagnetic SSE response and inconsistent with triplet spin transport. Quantitative estimates find a spin Seebeck coefficient comparable in magnitude to that observed in strongly magnetic materials. The microscopic nature of the magnetic excitations in VO2 requires further examination.
