Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) Implant Functionalization with Magnetron-Sputtered SrTiO3 for Regenerative Medicine

Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) is a polymer widely used for artificial bone implants but exhibits a low affinity for bone tissue and lacks osteoconductivity and osseointegration. Because strontium (Sr) is known to enhance bone growth, PEEK implants coated with strontium titanate [SrTiO3 (STO)] are expected to improve the bone growth around them. In this study, STO was deposited on model PEEK implants by magnetron sputtering deposition and its ability to release Sr2+ ions to a surrounding phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) solution was examined. It was found that, in the early stage of the deposition process, STO on a PEEK surface exhibits irregular surface structures with many holes. The amount of Sr stored in the STO film increases with the increasing film thickness but the release rate of Sr2+ ions from the STO film to the surrounding PBS also increases with the film thickness, limiting the duration of effectiveness of the STO-coated PEEK films. It was found, however, that a three-layer titanium (Ti)-STO-Ti film deposited on PEEK allows a steady release of Sr2+ ions to the surrounding PBS for an extended period. © 2023 by Begell House, Inc. ***.

Pyrolytically grown indium sulfide sensitized zinc oxide nanowires for solar water splitting

Zinc oxide (ZnO) nanowires, sensitized with spray pyrolyzed indium sulfide, were obtained by chemical bath deposition. The XRD analysis indicated dominant evolution of hexagonal ZnO phase. Significant gain in photoelectrochemical current using ZnO nanowires is largely accountable to enhancement of the visible light absorption and the formation of heterostructure. The maximum photoconversion efficiency of 2.77% was calculated for the indium sulfide sensitized ZnO nanowire photoelectrodes. (© 2015 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Electromagnetic nondestructive inspection for high-speed moving ferromagnetic materials is necessary for manufacturing efficiency. In this paper, we present a novel leakage magnetic flux (LMF) method to estimate the crack position in a moving cylindrical ferromagnetic rod. The method directly measures the first-order Fourier coefficients of the LMF moving with the crack by using only two coils with DC excitation. The location of a crack is estimated by the proposed method, as demonstrated for an S45C cylindrical rod.

Temperature dependent impedance behavior in the frequency range 100 Hz to 1 MHz of (Ba0.6Sr0.4)(Zr0.65Ti0.35)O3 ceramic is reported in this paper. Plots of Z′ and Z″ vs. frequency at different temperature indicate the significant difference in the magnitude of real and imaginary component of Z. However, these results did not expose the relaxing species definitely. This may be because of the variation of resistance with increasing temperature, displaying shifting of the relaxation frequency in the polarization process at typical frequency with increasing temperature. Hence, it is not clear whether the relaxing species is the oxygen vacancy itself, or electrons released from the oxygen vacancy, which can be the source of the space charge polarization.

Characteristic of corrosion resistance under different heat treatment conditions of coated zinc coating steel with Cr-free solution

This study performed a salt water spray test using zinc-coated steel sheet specimens, which are coated with S-700 solution and LR-0317. Test specimens were treated in the drying oven at 170∼210 °C for 5 minutes and at 190 °C for 3 to 9 minutes. Corrosion resistance of specimen was evaluated for 72 hours by salt water spray test. The coating layer was evaluated the adhesion by the cross-cut and the stability by the dipping of acid/alkali solution. In cross-cut test of coated specimens by S-700 and LR-0317, it was no peeling, and showed excellent adhesion. EGI and HDGI specimens appeared the lowest rust at the heat treatment of 190 °C for 5 minutes, and had the most good corrosion resistance. The acid resistance is not much affected by ambient temperature. The rusts of 60 °C dipping were more than the R.T dipping regardless of the type of material. The acid resistance of EGI by the S-700 solution improved without elemental difference by the oxide formed during the heat treatment. The Si oxide by LR-0317 solution had improved the corrosion resistance regardless of EGI and HDGI. This is judged that the component of Si oxide had control the corrosion. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2014.

Multifunctional scaffolds with host defense peptides designed for regenerative endodontics are desirable nanobiotechnological tools for ***,different scaffolds were tested for use during the pulp revascularization process,including poly(vinyl alcohol)-PVA hydrogels or resins,collagen hydrogels and poly(vinyl alcohol)PVA/Chitosan(PVA/CS)*** on time to degradation(21 days),nanofibers were chosen to be incorporated with ciprofloxacin and IDR-1002(each at 50 mg/g).Nanofibers containing ciprofloxacin and IDR-1002 had anti-biofilm activity against Enterococcus faecalis,Staphylococcus aureus and a multispecies oral biofilm,besides anti-inflammatory *** in vivo subcutaneous tissue response to tooth fragments filled with nanofibers demonstrated a pulp-like tissue formation,when compared to empty teeth ***,we designed a strong antimicrobial,immunomodulatory and regenerative candidate for pulp revascularization and regeneration procedures.

Structural behavior of coal obtained from Kraft lignin at different carbonizing rates

Biomass is a renewable resource which importance has attracted much attention face to the concerns involving the environmental and the oil crisis. The aim of this work is to convert lignin into coal by carbonization heat treatment of this biomass up to 1000 °C, under inert atmosphere, at different heating rates. The resulted coal samples were characterized by X-Ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy and surface area analyzes. Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction results show that longer heat treatment resulted in coals more ordered structurally. On the order hand, longer heat treatments favored the coal production with smaller surface area.

Modulation of electronic properties of materials by electric fields is central to the operation of modern semiconductor devices, providing access to complex electronic behaviors and greater freedom in tuning the energy bands of materials. Here, we explore one-dimensional superlattices induced by a confining electrostatic potential in monolayer MoS2, a prototypical two-dimensional semiconductor. Using first-principles calculations, we show that periodic potentials applied to monolayer MoS2 induce electrostatic superlattices in which the response is dominated by structural distortions relative to purely electronic effects. These structural distortions reduce the intrinsic band gap of the monolayer substantially while also polarizing the monolayer through piezoelectric coupling, resulting in spatial separation of charge carriers as well as Stark shifts that produce dispersive minibands. Importantly, these minibands inherit the valley-selective magnetic properties of monolayer MoS2, enabling fine control over spin-valley coupling in MoS2 and similar transition-metal dichalcogenides.

Effect of TiO 2 Nano-particles on Optical, Electrical and Mechanical Properties of Poly (Vinyl alcohol) Films

The effect of TiO 2 (5, 10 and 15 mg) nano-particles on optical, electrical and mechanical properties of Poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) films were reported. The un-doped PVA films showed high transmittance in the visible region, however with the increase of TiO 2 doping the transmittance has decreased. The films with sandwich structures of the type Al-PVA-Al and Al-PVA-TiO 2 -Al were fabricated to study its electrical properties. The current-voltage (I-V) characteristics show the leakage current density in PVA film slightly decreases with the addition of TiO 2 . The Raman spectrum shows characteristic scattering peaks of the PVA film at 1432, 1145, 920 and 852cm−1 and the peak observed at 637 cm−1 is attributed to anatase phase of TiO 2 . The mechanical properties of the films were improved substantially with the doping of TiO 2 nano-particles and the mechanism responsible for the improved strength is explained in detail.

In order to operate a public transportation system, it is necessary to plan the grounded fleet lines among the various origin/destination spread all over the city to better attend population displacement during the day, which uses the bus transportation system. To improve planning operation of the public transportation system, it is proposed a linear programming model to optimize the overall performance of transit systems, by setting the optimum buses fleet for every bus line of each company constrained to an accepted delay between any two bus stop on the bus circuit but with a minimum profit for the companies. As the routes are different for time to time during the day such as rush hour. The proposed model can cope with all the kinds of patterns during the day and the propose is to optimise the whole transportation system. It is discussed also the complexity of the nature of the dynamic of the transportation system. The mathematical modelling can show us correctly a way to qualify and quantify the routes, what helps to understand the dynamic behavior of the population through time, different situations and epochs. Simulations present the viability of implantation for real time system to estimate the transportation system as it changes.
