BACKGROUND:Our study aimed to confirm a simplified radiological scoring system, derived from a modified Reiff score, to evaluate its relationship with clinical symptoms and predictive outcomes in Taiwanese patients with noncystic fibrosis bronchiectasis (NCFB). METHODS:This extensive multicenter retrospective study, performed in Taiwan, concentrated on patients diagnosed with NCFB verified through high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) scans. We not only compared the clinical features of various types of bronchiectasis (cylindrical, varicose, and cystic). Furthermore, we established relationships between the severity of clinical factors, including symptom scores, pulmonary function, pseudomonas aeruginosa colonization, exacerbation and admission rates, and HRCT parameters using modified Reiff scores. RESULTS:Data from 2,753 patients were classified based on HRCT patterns (cylindrical, varicose, and cystic) and severity, assessed by modified Reiff scores (mild, moderate, and severe). With increasing HRCT severity, a significant correlation was found with decreased forced expiratory volume in the first second (FEV1) (p < 0.001), heightened clinical symptoms (p < 0.001), elevated pathogen colonization (pseudomonas aeruginosa) (p < 0.001), and an increased annual hospitalization rate (p < 0.001). In the following multivariate analysis, elderly age, pseudomonas aeruginosa pneumonia, and hospitalizations per year emerged as the only independent predictors of mortality. CONCLUSION:Based on our large cohort study, the simplified CT scoring system (Reiff score) can serve as a useful adjunct to clinical factors in predicting disease severity and prognosis among Taiwanese patients with NCFB.

We study nonlinear sigma model, especially Skyrme model with twist: twisted Skyrmion string where twist term, mkz, is indicated in vortex solution. To add gravity, we replace gμv in Lagrangian system with a space-time metric tensor, gμv which in view of the time-independence and cylindrical symmetry of the assumed vortex solution is taken to be a function of r alone. We use ode45 for numerical calculation, i.e. a tool box in Matlab to solve coupled Einstein field equations which have ordinary differential equations (ODE) form.

Background: In an era of shifting global agendas and expanded emphasis on non-communicable diseases and injuries along with communicable diseases, sound evidence on trends by cause at the national level is essential. The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) provides a systematic scientific assessment of published, publicly available, and contributed data on incidence, prevalence, and mortality for a mutually exclusive and collectively exhaustive list of diseases and injuries. Methods: GBD estimates incidence, prevalence, mortality, years of life lost (YLLs), years lived with disability (YLDs), and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) due to 369 diseases and injuries, for two sexes, and for 204 countries and territories. Input data were extracted from censuses, household surveys, civil registration and vital statistics, disease registries, health service use, air pollution monitors, satellite imaging, disease notifications, and other sources. Cause-specific death rates and cause fractions were calculated using the Cause of Death Ensemble model and spatiotemporal Gaussian process regression. Cause-specific deaths were adjusted to match the total all-cause deaths calculated as part of the GBD population, fertility, and mortality estimates. Deaths were multiplied by standard life expectancy at each age to calculate YLLs. A Bayesian meta-regression modelling tool, DisMod-MR 2.1, was used to ensure consistency between incidence, prevalence, remission, excess mortality, and cause-specific mortality for most causes. Prevalence estimates were multiplied by disability weights for mutually exclusive sequelae of diseases and injuries to calculate YLDs. We considered results in the context of the Socio-demographic Index (SDI), a composite indicator of income per capita, years of schooling, and fertility rate in females younger than 25 years. Nickel-tungsten alloy were fabricated by electrodeposition on carbon steel. The influences of saccharin sodium on the coatings were analyzed using XRD, SEM, and hardness tester. This study reveals that the presence of saccharine sodium has a profound impact on the morphology of the coatings. Moreover, the addition of saccharine sodium tends to enhance the tungsten content in the coatings along with hardness and the grain size of the deposits. © (2015) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

The enormous amount of short reads generated by the new DNA sequencing technologies call for the development of fast and accurate read alignment programs. A first generation of hash table-based methods has been developed, including Mapping and Assembly with Quality (MAQ), which is accurate, feature rich and fast enough to align short reads from a single individual .However, MAQ does not support gapped alignment for single-end reads, which makes it unsuitable for alignment of longer reads where indels may occur frequently. The speed of MAQ is also a concern when the alignment is scaled up to the resequencing of hundreds of individuals. Therefore, we carried out an in-depth performance analysis of BWA a popular BWT-based aligner and discovered that its performance is significantly better than MAQ although, it has drawbacks regarding execution speed, time complexity and accuracy. Based on those factors we implemented an improved Burrows-Wheeler Alignment algorithm (BWA), anew read alignment package which is original BWT optimized by source code of Ziv-Lempel (LZ-77) sliding window technique and prefix trie string matching, to efficiently search for inexact and exact matches on tandem repeats against a large reference sequence genome. Our analysis show that search speed of improved BWA significantly increased by approximately 1.40 ×faster than MAQ-32 while achieving sufficiently higher accuracy with percent confidence of 96.7 % and 93.0 %. Moreover, it is more efficient to search exact and inexact matches supported by percent error of 0.05 % single ends and 0.04 % for paired end reads also more effective to search for left and right overlap tandem repeat at percent confidence of 88.9%

Influence of optical activity on rogue waves propagating in chiral optical fibers

We derive the nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation in chiral optical fiber with right- and left-hand nonlinear polarization. We use the similarity transformation to reduce the generalized chiral NLS equation to the higher-order integrable Hirota equation. We present the first- and second-order rational solutions of the chiral NLS equation with variable and constant coefficients, based on the modified Darboux transformation method. For some specific set of parameters, the features of chiral optical rogue waves are analyzed from analytical results, showing the influence of optical activity on waves. We also generate the exact solutions of the two-component coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations, which describe optical activity effects on the propagation of rogue waves, and their properties in linear and nonlinear coupling cases are investigated. The condition of modulation instability of the background reveals the existence of vector rogue waves and the number of stable and unstable branches. Controllability of chiral optical rogue waves is examined by numerical simulations and may bring potential applications in optical fibers and in many other physical systems.

A compact electromagnetic multi-resonator is presented in this paper using a new technique for chipless RFID tag data encoding. Employing Archimedean spirals, the information is applied into the spectral signature shifting resonant frequencies in several positions. The multi-resonator tag proposed operates in microwave band (between 3.0-7.0GHz) and has a coding data capacity of up to 100 decimal numbers for two resonant frequencies. The simulated and measured results show a good concordance and a great perspective to use in low-cost RFID chipless tag applications. © 2015 IEEE.

The ultimate goal of multiferroic research is the development of new-generation non-volatile memory devices1, the so-called magnetoelectric (ME) memories, where magnetic bits are controlled via electric fields without the application of electrical currents subject to dissipation. This low-power operation exploits the entanglement of the magnetization and the electric polarization coexisting in multiferroic materials2,3. Here we demonstrate the optical readout of ME memory states in the antiferromagnetic (AFM) and antiferroelectric (AFE) LiCoPO4, based on the strong absorption difference of THz radiation between its two types of ME domains. This unusual contrast is attributed to the dynamic ME effect of the spin-wave excitations, as confirmed by our microscopic model, which also captures the characteristics of the observed static ME effect.
