Sodium niobate with high photocatalytic activity for the removal of organic dye and inactivation of Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Klebsiella pneumoniae bacteria: the effect of Zn doping on these properties

NaNbO3 doped with Zn (0.00, 0.02, and 0.05 mmol) was synthesized by the microwave-assisted hydrothermal method. Photocatalytic and antibacterial activities were investigated. X-ray diffraction revealed the coexistence of two orthorhombic symmetries (P21ma and Pbma), with doping promoting a progressive increase in the Pbma fraction. All samples exhibited a fiber-like shape (diameter of ∼200 nm), which remained unchanged with doping. The low Zn content (0.02 mmol) reduced the band gap energy from 3.08 to 2.95 eV. As a result, this sample exhibited superior photocatalytic activity, achieving 100 % RhB dye degradation within 45 min, under UV light. Scavenger tests revealed that hydroxyl radicals, holes, and superoxide radical anions were the main active species involved in the photocatalytic reaction. Additionally, the photocatalyst demonstrated excellent recyclability over three consecutive cycles. Pure NaNbO3 exhibited strong antibacterial activity, completely inhibiting the growth of S. aureus, E. coli, and K. pneumoniae at the tested concentrations. Although the Zn-doped sample also demonstrated antibacterial action, the response was concentration-dependent. This study is the first report on Zn doping in NaNbO3, as well as the first investigation of its antibacterial activity against K. pneumoniae and S. aureus. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of spray dry blood plasma (SDBP) supplementation for newborn piglets on performance, seric biochemical variables, total antioxidant levels, and nitric oxide. Thus, 20 newborn piglets, with lower body wheith (1.179 ± 0.276 kg) were distributed in an experimental design with five randomized blocks (females were considered block), with two treatments and ten repetitions. The treatment consisted to provide 10 g of SDBP (group T), previously diluted at 1:4 (blood plasma/water) administered for the first hour post-birth of the piglets, and a control group (group C;without blood plasma administration). The performance of newborn piglets was evaluated at days 1, 8, 15, 22, and 28 after birth, and the seric biochemical variables (cholesterol, triglycerides, gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and urea), total antioxidant levels by ferric reducing ability of plasma (FRAP) method, and nitrite/nitrate (NO_x) levels were evaluated at days 5, 15, and 22 post-birth of the piglets. No difference was observed in treatments (groups C and T) for weight gain, as well as for the most biochemical variables, except GGT and NO_x (P < 0.05). There was a significant effect (P < 0.05) on age for ALT, AST, and FRAP, i.e., these variables increase in serum. Triglyceride levels have a tendency for reduction (P = 0.07) according to the age. GGT activity and NO_x levels were lower (P < 0.05) in group T, as well as the AST levels that showed a tendency for reduction in this group compared to group C. Therefore, supplementation with 10 g for SDBP did not interfere in the weight gain, but altered the GGT activity and NO_x levels in the serum of newborn piglets with low weight. © 2016, Springer-Verlag London.

Objective. To evaluate the prevalence of HSV-1 and HSV-2 in pregnant and nonpregnant women, testing the correlation between DNA of the viruses with colposcopic and/or cytological changes, and evaluate association with sociodemographic characteristics and sexual activity. Methods. Included in this study were 106 pregnant and 130 nonpregnant women treated at primary health care units of Natal, Brazil, in the period 2010-2011. The patients were examined by colposcopy, and two cervical specimens were collected: one for cytology examination and another for analysis by PCR for detection of HSV-1 and HSV-2. Results. HSV-1 alone was detected in 16.0% of pregnant and 30.0% of nonpregnant women. For HSV-2, these rates were 12.3% and 15.5%, respectively. HSV-2 had a higher correlation with cytology and/or colposcopy changes than HSV-1 did. Genital HSV-1 infection was not associated with any of the variables tested, whereas HSV-2 infection was associated with ethnicity, marital status, and number of sexual partners. Conclusions. The prevalence of HSV-1 was higher than that observed for HSV-2 in both pregnant and nonpregnant women. The genital infection by HSV-2 was higher in women with changed colposcopy and/or cytology, and it was associated with ethnicity, marital status, and number of sexual partners.

Background: In an era of shifting global agendas and expanded emphasis on non-communicable diseases and injuries along with communicable diseases, sound evidence on trends by cause at the national level is essential. The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) provides a systematic scientific assessment of published, publicly available, and contributed data on incidence, prevalence, and mortality for a mutually exclusive and collectively exhaustive list of diseases and injuries. Methods: GBD estimates incidence, prevalence, mortality, years of life lost (YLLs), years lived with disability (YLDs), and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) due to 369 diseases and injuries, for two sexes, and for 204 countries and territories. Input data were extracted from censuses, household surveys, civil registration and vital statistics, disease registries, health service use, air pollution monitors, satellite imaging, disease notifications, and other sources. Cause-specific death rates and cause fractions were calculated using the Cause of Death Ensemble model and spatiotemporal Gaussian process regression. Cause-specific deaths were adjusted to match the total all-cause deaths calculated as part of the GBD population, fertility, and mortality estimates. Deaths were multiplied by standard life expectancy at each age to calculate YLLs. A Bayesian meta-regression modelling tool, DisMod-MR 2.1, was used to ensure consistency between incidence, prevalence, remission, excess mortality, and cause-specific mortality for most causes. Prevalence estimates were multiplied by disability weights for mutually exclusive sequelae of diseases and injuries to calculate YLDs. We considered results in the context of the Socio-demographic Index (SDI), a composite indicator of income per capita, years of schooling, and fertility rate in females younger than 25 years. Background: High-resolution estimates of HIV burden across space and time provide an important tool for tracking and monitoring the progress of prevention and control efforts and assist with improving the precision and efficiency of targeting efforts. We aimed to assess HIV incidence and HIV mortality for all second-level administrative units across sub-Saharan Africa. Methods: In this modelling study, we developed a framework that used the geographically specific HIV prevalence data collected in seroprevalence surveys and antenatal care clinics to train a model that estimates HIV incidence and mortality among individuals aged 15–49 years. We used a model-based geostatistical framework to estimate HIV prevalence at the second administrative level in 44 countries in sub-Saharan Africa for 2000–18 and sought data on the number of individuals on antiretroviral therapy (ART) by second-level administrative unit. We then modified the Estimation and Projection Package (EPP) to use these HIV prevalence and treatment estimates to estimate HIV incidence and mortality by second-level administrative unit. Findings: The estimates suggest substantial variation in HIV incidence and mortality rates both between and within countries in sub-Saharan Africa, with 15 countries having a ten-times or greater difference in estimated HIV incidence between the second-level administrative units with the lowest and highest estimated incidence levels. Across all 44 countries in 2018, HIV incidence ranged from 2·8 (95% uncertainty interval 2·1–3·8) in Mauritania to 1585·9 (1369·4–1824·8) cases per 100 000 people in Lesotho and HIV mortality ranged from 0·8 (0·7–0·9) in Mauritania to 676·5 (513·6–888·0) deaths per 100 000 people in Lesotho. Background: Experimental and epidemiological studies indicate an association between exposure to particulate matter (PM) air pollution and increased risk of type 2 diabetes. In view of the high and increasing prevalence of diabetes, we aimed to quantify the burden of type 2 diabetes attributable to PM_2·5 originating from ambient and household air pollution. Methods: We systematically compiled all relevant cohort and case-control studies assessing the effect of exposure to household and ambient fine particulate matter (PM_2·5) air pollution on type 2 diabetes incidence and mortality. We derived an exposure–response curve from the extracted relative risk estimates using the MR-BRT (meta-regression—Bayesian, regularised, trimmed) tool. The estimated curve was linked to ambient and household PM_2·5 exposures from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2019, and estimates of the attributable burden (population attributable fractions and rates per 100 000 population of deaths and disability-adjusted life-years) for 204 countries from 1990 to 2019 were calculated. We also assessed the role of changes in exposure, population size, age, and type 2 diabetes incidence in the observed trend in PM_2·5-attributable type 2 diabetes burden. All estimates are presented with 95% uncertainty intervals. Findings: In 2019, approximately a fifth of the global burden of type 2 diabetes was attributable to PM_2·5 exposure, with an estimated 3·78 (95% uncertainty interval 2·68–4·83) deaths per 100 000 population and 167 (117–223) disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) per 100 000 population. Approximately 13·4% (9·49–17·5) of deaths and 13·6% (9·73–17·9) of DALYs due to type 2 diabetes were contributed by ambient PM2·5, and 6·50% (4·22–9·53) of deaths and 5·92% (3·81–8·64) of DALYs by household air pollution.
