Background: High-resolution estimates of HIV burden across space and time provide an important tool for tracking and monitoring the progress of prevention and control efforts and assist with improving the precision and efficiency of targeting efforts. We aimed to assess HIV incidence and HIV mortality for all second-level administrative units across sub-Saharan Africa. Methods: In this modelling study, we developed a framework that used the geographically specific HIV prevalence data collected in seroprevalence surveys and antenatal care clinics to train a model that estimates HIV incidence and mortality among individuals aged 15–49 years. We used a model-based geostatistical framework to estimate HIV prevalence at the second administrative level in 44 countries in sub-Saharan Africa for 2000–18 and sought data on the number of individuals on antiretroviral therapy (ART) by second-level administrative unit. We then modified the Estimation and Projection Package (EPP) to use these HIV prevalence and treatment estimates to estimate HIV incidence and mortality by second-level administrative unit. Findings: The estimates suggest substantial variation in HIV incidence and mortality rates both between and within countries in sub-Saharan Africa, with 15 countries having a ten-times or greater difference in estimated HIV incidence between the second-level administrative units with the lowest and highest estimated incidence levels. Across all 44 countries in 2018, HIV incidence ranged from 2·8 (95% uncertainty interval 2·1–3·8) in Mauritania to 1585·9 (1369·4–1824·8) cases per 100 000 people in Lesotho and HIV mortality ranged from 0·8 (0·7–0·9) in Mauritania to 676·5 (513·6–888·0) deaths per 100 000 people in Lesotho. Variation in both incidence and mortality was substantially greater at the subnational level than at the national level and the highest estimated rates were accordingly higher. The objective of this study was analyze the effects of cohabitation with sick partner on allergic lung inflammatory response in ovalbumin (OVA) sensitized and challenged mice. Pairs of mice were divided into control and experimental groups. Within each group, one mouse from each pairs was immunized with a solution containing (OVA). The remaining mouse from the experimental group was injected with Ehrlich tumor cells being designated as “companion of sick partner” (CSP); the remaining mouse of the control group was injected with PBS being designated as “companion of healthy partner” (CHP). CSP mice presented in relation to CHP mice: increased number of eosinophils and neutrophils in the BAL; increased IL-4 and IL-5 levels and decreased IL-10 and INF-γ in the BAL supernatant; increased IgG1-OVA and decrease IgG2a-OVA levels on peripheral blood; increased expression of L-selectin in the BAL granulocytes; decreased in vitro tracheal reactivity to metacholine; no changes on plasma corticosterone levels and increased levels of plasmatic noradrenaline. The results suggest that the exacerbation of the allergic lung inflammatory response in CSP mice is a consequence of the psychological stress induced by forced long-term cohabitation with sick the partner, a fact that might ultimately depend on the changes induced by catecholamines on Th1/Th2 balance, toward a Th2 cytokine profile and finally the recruitment and activation of eosinophils in the airways. Background: The participation of young in volleyball is becoming increasingly common, and this increased involvement raises concerns about the risk of installation of sports injuries. Therefore, the objectives the study were identify the characteristics of sports injuries in young volleyball players and associate anthropometric and training variables with contributing factors for injuries. Methods. A total of 522 volleyball players participating in the High School Olympic Games of the State of São Paulo (Brazil) were interviewed. A reported condition inquiry was used to gather information on injuries, such as anatomic site affected, mechanism and moment of injury, as well as personal and training data. The level of significance was set at 5%. Results: A 19% frequency of injuries was found. Higher age, weight, height, body mass index and training duration values were associated with the occurrence of injuries. The most affected anatomic site was the ankle/foot complex (45 injuries, 36.3%). Direct contact and contactless mechanisms were the main causes of injuries (61 injuries;49.2% and 48 injuries;38.7%, respectively). Training was the moment in which most injuries occurred (93 injuries;75%), independently of personal and training characteristics. Conclusion: Injuries affected the ankle/foot complex with a greater frequency. Direct contact and contactless mechanisms were the most frequently reported and injuries occurred mainly during training sessions. Personal and training characteristics were contributing factors for the occurrence of injuries. © 2013 Vanderlei et al.;licensee BioMed Central Ltd.

Effect of propolis on mast cells in wound healing

Wound healing is divided into three phases: inflammatory, proliferative and remodeling. Mast cells participate in all these phases. The aim of the present study was to determine the effects of propolis on the population of mast cells in oral surgical wounds in comparison to the results obtained with dexamethasone. This study was prospective, in vivo, randomized, semiexperimental, quantitative and comparative animal. A circular surgical wound was made on the dorsum of the tongue of 90 hamsters divided into three experimental groups: topical application of 30% propolis alcoholic extract (Group 1);0.1% dexamethasone in orabase cream (Group 2);and orabase cream alone (Group 3). Applications were performed every 12 h throughout the experiment. The postoperative times for killing of the animals were 1, 3, 7, 14 and 28 days. The Student's t test for independent samples was employed in the statistical analysis. In the inflammatory phase of healing, propolis caused a greater reduction in the number of mast cells on the edge and in the central region of the surgical wound in comparison to dexamethasone. Moreover, the number of mast cells on day 1 was lower in the central region of the wounds treated with the orabase cream alone in comparison to dexamethasone. In conclusion, the anti-inflammatory action of propolis mediated by mast cells was more effective than dexamethasone in the inflammatory phase of healing. © 2012 Springer Basel AG.

Abstract. Background. Gingival overgrowth (GO) is a common side effect of the chronic use of cyclosporine (CsA), an immunosuppressant widely used to prevent rejection in transplant patients. Recent studies have reported elevated levels of specific cytokines in gingival overgrowth tissue, particularly TGF-beta, suggesting that this growth factor plays a role in the accumulation of extracellular matrix materials. The effectiveness of azithromycin, a macrolide antibiotic, in the regression of this undesirable side effect has also been demonstrated. Methods. In this study, we created an experimental model for assessing the therapeutic effect of roxithromycin in GO and the expression of transforming growth factor beta (TGF-beta2) through immunohistochemistry. We used four groups of rats totaling 32 individuals. GO was induced during five weeks and drug treatment was given on the 6th week as follows: group 1 received saline;group 2 received CsA and was treated with saline on the 6th week;group 3 received CsA and, on the 6th week, ampicilin;and group 4 received CsA during 5 weeks and, on the 6th week, was treated with roxithromycin. Results. The results demonstrated that roxithromycin treatment was effective in reducing cyclosporine-induced GO in rats. Both epithelial and connective tissue showed a decrease in thickness and a significant reduction in TGF-beta2 expression, with a lower number of fibroblasts, reduction in fibrotic areas and decrease in inflammatory infiltrate. Conclusion. The present data suggest that the down-regulation of TGF-beta2 expression may be an important mechanism of action by which roxithromycin inhibits GO. © 2009 Condé et al;licensee BioMed Central Ltd.
