Students' representation about Newton law: consequences of 'zero intuition'

Newton's laws can represent in the language of verbal, mathematical, physical, and visual. Students who understood concept would express the concepts in various representations consistently. In this research, a mathematical presentation used to reveal the student's concept understanding about Newton first law. The results showed that 21.87% of the students changed the mathematical presentation of Newton's first law into verbal representation incorrectly. Changing the mathematical form of Newton's first law into the form of caused the percentage of students who did not respond increased, further concluded that 'zero intuition' in the equation of Newton first law caused misconceptions.

Preparation and Characterization of Microwave-absorption of Sarulla North Sumatra Zeolite and Ferric Oxide-filled Polyurethane Nanocomposites

Microwave-absorptive polymeric composite materials are becoming important to protect interference of any communication systems due to the increase in the use of microwave-inducing devices. In this work, the microwave-absorptive polyurethane composites are prepared using natural zeolites of Sarulla North Sumatra and commercial ferric-oxide as fillers. Weight ratio of the natural zeolite to ferric oxide were varied (18:2; 16:4; 14:6; 12:8 and 10:10) by weight. The fillers are prepared using ball milling technique and characterized using Particle Size Analyzer for particle size distribution. The nanocomposites, prepared using in-situ reaction of polyethylene glycol and toluene diisocyanate, is characterized for physical and mechanical properties using tensile strength, thermal properties with TGA techniques, as well as morphological and chemical properties using scanning electron microscopy. Composition and loading of the nanofillers against polyurethane matrices is 20% by weight. Microwave-absorption properties of the nanocomposites is characterized using 8-12 GHz frequency. Tensile strengths of the natural zeolite-ferric oxides polyurethane nanocomposites shows higher values when matrices filled with lower ferric-oxide, which could be due to the nanozeolites have functioned as reinforcement for the polyurethane matrix through polar-polar interaction between the filler surfaces with the matrices. The microwave absorption properties, which investigated by Vector Network Analyzer, of the nanocomposites filled in polyurethane with the ratio of nanozeolite to ferric oxide filler of 12:8 shows reflection loss of – 13.2 dB. This condition was observed at 11.1 GHz.

Using word-pictorial presentation model to simplify understanding concept test of Newton's law

The information in the presentation of the test is a factor that affects student's response; it can be the correct or incorrect answer. Assume that students already know the information for an example speed. If the questions related to kinematics, then the chances of students answered correctly are greater than if it related to the dynamics. This potential is used principally to Simplify Student Understanding Concept Test of Newton's Law. FCI (Force Concept Inventory) numbers 13 and 14 used as a comparison of Word- Pictorial WPP model. WPP model applied to the students who take the course of mechanics (22 students). Obtained a positive correlation between WPP and FCI numbers 13 and 14, with value of r13 = 0, 72, r14 = 0, 88. It can conclude that the WPP model could be used as an alternative assessment to assess student understanding concept of Newton's Law

We study nonlinear sigma model, especially Skyrme model with twist: twisted Skyrmion string where twist term, mkz, is indicated in vortex solution. To add gravity, we replace gμv in Lagrangian system with a space-time metric tensor, gμv which in view of the time-independence and cylindrical symmetry of the assumed vortex solution is taken to be a function of r alone. We use ode45 for numerical calculation, i.e. a tool box in Matlab to solve coupled Einstein field equations which have ordinary differential equations (ODE) form.

An identification and characterization of biodiesel fatty acid based by using dielectric sensor

The fatty acids composition is identified by a gas chromatography mass spectrometer (GC-MS), then it is characterized in saturated and unsaturated components. This paper investigates biodiesel fatty acid by using dielectric constant measurements and focuses on dielectric sensor based on biodiesel chemical properties characterization. The objectives of this paper are identification fatty acids and determination of correlation dielectric properties and biodiesel fatty acid characterization. The proposed method is dielectric constant by using capacitance sensor are applied to determine the response dielectric sensor from the fatty acid composition. Sixteen fatty acid methyl esters were identified and two characterizations the amount of saturated and unsaturated fatty ester fractions. The model parameter was determined by regression analysis for estimating the relationships among fatty acid content and dielectric properties. The results show that measurements of electrical properties, successfully used for the characterization of fatty acids. The dielectric constant of biodiesel was found increasing as the saturated decreases. This relationship becomes calibration for the assessment of the quality of biodiesel based on the dielectric sensor. The model reveals that the fatty acid composition affects the value of the biodiesel dielectric and show that dielectric sensor potentially to handle for characterization of biodiesel fatty acid content.

This study aimed to investigate the effects of interval and continuous training on the body mass gain and adiposity levels of rats fed a high-fat diet. Forty-eight male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into two groups, standard diet and high-fat diet, and received their respective diets for a period of four weeks without exercise stimuli. After this period, the animals were randomly divided into six groups (n=8): control standard diet (CS), control high-fat diet (CH), continuous training standard diet (CTS), continuous training high-fat diet (CTH), interval training standard diet (ITS), and interval training high-fat diet (ITH). The interval and continuous training consisted of a swimming exercise performed over eight weeks. CH rats had greater body mass gain, sum of adipose tissues mass, and lower serum high density lipoprotein values than CS. The trained groups showed lower values of feed intake, caloric intake, body mass gain, and adiposity levels compared with the CH group. No significant differences were observed between the trained groups (CTS versus ITS and CTH versus ITH) on body mass gains and adiposity levels. In conclusion, both training methodologies were shown to be effective in controlling body mass gain and adiposity levels in high-fat diet fed rats. © 2016 Guilherme L. da Rocha et al.

Profile of student critical thinking ability on static fluid concept

Critical thinking ability is an important part of educational goals. It has higher complex processes, such as analyzing, synthesizing and evaluating, drawing conclusion and reflection. This study is aimed to know the critical thinking ability of students in learning static fluids of senior high school students. This research uses the descriptive method which its instruments based on the indicator of critical thinking ability developed according to Ennis. The population of this research is XIth grade science class Public Senior High School, SMA N 1, Sambungmacan, Sragen, Central Java. The static fluid teaching material is delivered using Problem Based Learning Model through class experiment. The results of this study shows that the average student of XIth science class have high critical thinking skills, particularly in the ability of providing simple explanation, build basic skill, and provide advanced explanation, but they do not have high enough in ability of drawing conclusion and strategic and tactical components of critical thinking ability in the study of static fluid teaching material. The average of students critical thinking ability is 72.94, with 27,94% of students are in a low category and 72,22% of students in the high category of critical thinking ability.

Gravity Data Analysis and Modelling for Basin Sedimen of Eastern Java Blocks

The study of Eastern Java Basin was conducted by 3D modelling subsurface structure using gravity anomaly. The aims of this research are to describe and 3D modelling basin sedimentary system of Eastern Java Blocks based on gravity anomaly. The modelling construction was performed by inversion technique applying Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) method and Occam optimization. This projection method used equivalent central mass of Dampney with height 5.5 km and error data 1,84 × 10-17. Separation of residual anomaly from the complete Bouguer anomaly on a flat plane was done using the upward continuation. This process uses the principle of low pass filter which passes low frequency. Sedimentary basin appears at a depth of 0.2 km to 1.4 km, is shown by their low anomaly in the area, as well as the visible appearance of basin in 3D modeling shown in figure. The result of inversion with Occam h has an error of 1,2% and the SVD has an error of 11%. Sedimentary basin was dominant in Probolinggo, partially in Besuki and Lumajang. The formation occurs due to tectonic processes where the tectonic evolution of the material without significant lateral shift is called as the otokton models, and accompanied by the formation of the basin that follows the development of the subduction system, which is semi-concentric pattern. Sediments are dominated by volcanic sediment, the result of sedimentation because of volcanism events and types of volcanic sediments pyroclasts generally occur in a process or event explosive volcanic magma degassing

West Halmahera is the convergency of three plates, namely the Philippines plate, the Eurasian plate, and the Pasific plate. The location of the West Halmahera is located in the thress plates, so the Western Halmahera potentially earthquake-prone areas. Some events increased activity of Mount Soputan and Mount Gamalama preceded by a massive earthquake. This research was conducted in the BMKG Region I Medan. This research uses Coulomb Stress Model. Coulomb Stress Model was used to show increasing and decreasing stress consequence from earthquake in the area of West Halmahera. Data such as the earthquake magnitude, earthquake depth, and Focal Mechanism required as input models. The data obtained from BMKG, Global CMT, and PVMBG. The result of data analyzed show an increase in the coulomb stress distribution at Mount Soputan 0.023 bar and 0.007 bar in mountain Gamalama. This stress followed by increased volcanic activity of the mount Soputan and mount Gamalama with freatic eruption type.

Microtremor analysis to test the durability of Jumoyo Bridge, Central Java

Jumoyo Bridge is one of bridges connecting the main highways of Magelang-Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The bridge durability test was conducted to determine self-frequency and motion direction of the bridge’s particles. Measurements were performed in two circumstances, namely when the location was crowded and deserted to be passed by vehicles. Measurements points consisted of six points along Jumoyo Bridge, and one point above the ground level near the bridge. Obtaining the movement of particles and HVSR spectrum, the data analysis was conducted by using Geopsy software. The self-frequency values of the bridge were calculated based on HVSR spectrum. The process of selecting signal (windowing) was performed manually on the ambient signals. The self-frequency values of the bridge obtained were in the range of 2.74 to 2.95 Hz, with the amplitude were 0.48 to 1.63 mm. The bridge’s particle motion in vertical direction have trending N-S, while in horizontal direction tends to SW-NE. The ground’s frequency value around the bridge was 0.79 Hz. Based on these results, it can be said that Jumoyo Bridge has resistance towards the resonance danger of the ground. For the next measurement, it needs to measure the stresses that occur to obtain more complete analysis.
