Network interfaces are present in a variety of battery powered computer systems, such as notebooks, ultrabooks, tablets and mobile phones. Considering that the battery life is still a constraint, there are opportunities for power management by reducing the power consumption of idle network interfaces. In this work, a dynamic timeout power policy for network interfaces is presented, incorporating workload estimation and a problem optimization at runtime, thus providing power savings and suitable performance.

The University is considered as playing a relevant role in the local context, as well as collaborating for the regional development due to its plural character. The Federal Universities are formal institutions that follow specific rules and regulations and are present in all Brazilian states aiming at educating professionals to meet the country's needs. Although being country-wide organizations, their action is local. A Federal University may be considered as a driver for local and regional development. Additionally, the institution has innovative principles and follows them, as is the case of UFSC (Santa Catarina Federal University) campus in Joinville-SC/BR. The aim of this paper is to analyze the creation of the Inovaparq in the light of the Triple Helix (TH) since the implementation of the Mobility engineering Center at UFSC. To this end, we adopted a qualitative approach as a method, with bibliographical and documental research, being configured as a case study. As a result of this action, there are the establishment of an Technological Innovation Park in Joinville and Region (Inovaparq), two public notices and some companies that had already working at Inovaparq platforms. The success of the incubated companies in Inovaparq is also an important outcome of this venture.

Mainstream Traffic Flow Control (MTFC) with Variable Speed Limits (VSL) is a freeway traffic control method which aims to maximize throughput by regulating the mainstream flow upstream from a bottleneck. Recent studies in a macroscopic simulator have shown optimal and feedback MTFC potential to improve traffic conditions. In this paper, local feedback MTFC is applied in microscopic simulation for an on-ramp merge bottleneck. Traffic behavior reveals important aspects that had not been previously captured in macroscopic simulation. Mainly, the more realistic VSL application at specific points instead of along an entire freeway section produces a slower traffic response to speed limit changes. In addition, the nonlinear speed limit-flow relation observed in the microscopic model is more pronounced than what was observed at the macroscopic level. After appropriate modifications in the control law significant improvements in traffic conditions were obtained. © 2013 IEEE.

Power policies are widely applied at computer systems such as desktops, notebooks, and smartphones. For example, the timeout policy to turn off the display. A power management policy must be tested by measuring the power consumption of an experimental platform running workloads. Such tests must be fast enough to feedback the development process with valuable information about the power policy performance. In this work, we have presented a methodology for estimating computer systems power consumption for time scaled experiments. Using the proposed methodology, we have reduced the overall time for developing a power management policy.

Companies are more commonly adopting the distributed teams' model, in order to increase their knowledge and skill set. In doing so the company will obtain several benefits, but it will lose its personal touch in managing their employees. Aiming to verify if this tradeoff is beneficial for the company, Performance Measurement systems are more and more being applied to distributed teams and to follow this growth researchers are consistently focusing on this area. Due to this focus the count of articles reporting developments in the required capabilities to form and manage distributed teams performance measurement system increases as well. Along the way some researchers are developing/applying different types of literature review on the subject in order to identify its growth and the main areas the topic is growing. Following this trend the author performed a systematic review on the theme "Which organizational capabilities/competences a company must have in order to manage/develop distributed teams performance?". This paper aims to present a model to evaluate such literature review in order to quantify and qualify the results to make it even more clearly to other researchers. Based on the results of the research, others will be able to compare the research areas and contribute with its development.

Faced with a scenario where the growth of urban centers is increasing, the BRT system comes as a viable solution to this, enabling the development of functional bus corridors, serving to meet the demand of rapid shifts, especially in areas with high population density. However, to characterize as a system, it is necessary to measure their level of performance in the face of various aspects that are part of his characterization. For this, the article aims to study the main criteria influencers for the development of a performance measurement system for the BRT systems in Brazil, using for this the bibliographic research, technical manuals and expert opinion about the subject, focusing, at the end of this, to reveal these criteria, aiming at the future the elaboration of indicators to facilitate its performance evaluation.

The theme of sustainable development has increasingly impacted the spheres of Brazilian society and has contributed to greater awareness to the need of natural resources conservation as well as issues on how to continue promoting socio-economic development of regions. One of the key issues for sustainable development is the generation of electricity with more use of renewable sources and, therefore, less environmental degradation. In this scenario, historically, Paraná State of Brazil has been one of the largest producers of electricity in the country, almost entirely from hydraulic source, due to the large existing river basin in the state. However, the use of this source in Brazil is declining due to depletion of water potential and also the pressure of society with respect to environmental, social and economic impacts caused by damming of rivers and flooding of cities and areas to form large reservoirs. To overcome these limitations, other sources have been studied and used, such as biomass and wind. Photovoltaic generation has been contemplated in Brazilian government policies only to supply electricity with off-grid systems in remote locations. However, due to the recent Resolution 482/2012 of ANEEL (Brazilian Electricity Regulatory Agency), which establishes rules for micro and mini-generation of electricity, it is possible that consumers install grid connected photovoltaic systems up to 1 MWp, as have been widely used in the urban environment installed or integrated on roofs as a form of distributed generation, particularly in Europe, where counts with installed capacity in GW range, while in Brazil it counts only with a few MW. Given this new perspective of growth of the Brazilian photovoltaic electricity generation this paper presents the potential of solar photovoltaic power generation in Paraná State, Brazil, with a comparative analysis with the potential presented by some European countries. The need for collaboration across companies and across areas in the same company is a reality that systems, people and other stakeholders must deal with it. When there is sharing of information, communication among entities, interaction and integration, progress occurs and, all these components working together can improve enterprise performance. As the need of these 'inter operations' is real, the interoperability is becoming a key factor for companies facing with collaborative-cooperative environments. Enterprise Interoperability Assessment (EIA) provides a company the opportunity to know their strengths, weaknesses and prioritize actions to improve its performance and maturity. This paper presents concepts regarding Enterprise Interoperability focusing in EIA, including some existing models and establishing relationship with CMMI, a reference adopted worldwide, in order to identify common perspectives.

The goal of this paper is to show a study to evaluate the possibility of using ontologies to support maintenance procedures in IT equipment in a small power company. The aim is to improve the degree of reliability in detection of potential failures and defects in maintenance processes of information technology critical assets, trying to obtain less downtime of services that they provide. The methodological procedures used in this study were literature review, to present the modeling concepts of knowledge focused on ontologies creation and state of the art in building of field procedures describing the steps from initial drafting of ontology finishing with their tests. The results demonstrate that it is viable to utilize this technique, where the network equipment that keeps critical services require high level of availability on meeting the needs of the corporation.
