Ship recycling at the end of its useful life presents significant environmental and health challenges due to the presence of hazardous materials, such as asbestos and synthetic vitreous fibers (SVFs). This study aimed to convert SVFs and asbestos into safe, reusable co-products by incorporating them into a glassy matrix. The materials were melted at 1200 °C for 1 h with utilization of niobium pentoxide (Nb2O5) to lower fusion temperatures. Samples collected from an offshore vessel and platform being recycled in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, were analyzed using energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), revealing the presence of SVFs but not asbestos. Seven types of glass were produced, with their non-crystalline, glassy nature confirmed by the presence of an amorphous halo in X-ray diffraction (XRD) and a glass transition observed in differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). These findings demonstrate the potential to transform hazardous waste into value-added products, advancing a circular economy in ship recycling operations. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature 2025.

Gain scheduling has been successfully applied in many different areas due to the positive results achieved when applied to nonlinear control. Its utilization enables the controller to respond rapidly to changes in operating conditions. This study demonstrates the application of gain scheduling to a SMAR didactic level system to implement adaptive control. The results exhibited a strong response with minor errors using a Proportional and Integral (PI) controller, which facilitated the development of two generic equations for determining the values of K p (proportional gain) and K i (integral gain) based on the desired set point.

This paper presents the design and analysis of an extremum seeking (ES) controller for scalar static maps in the context of infinite-dimensional dynamics governed by the 1D Euler-Bernoulli (EB) beam Partial Differential Equation (PDE). The beam is actuated at one end (using position and moment actuators). The map’s input is the displacement at the beam’s uncontrolled end, which is subject to a sliding boundary condition. Notably, ES for this class of PDEs remains unexplored in the existing literature. To compensate for PDE actuation dynamics, we employ a boundary control law via a backstepping transformation and averaging-based estimates for the gradient and Hessian of the static map to be optimized. This compensation controller leverages a Schrödinger equation representation of the EB beam and adapts existing backstepping designs to stabilize the beam. Using the semigroup and averaging theory in infinite dimensions, we prove local exponential convergence to a small neighborhood of the unknown optimal point. Finally, simulations illustrate the effectiveness of the design in optimizing the unknown static map. Copyright © 2025, The Authors. All rights reserved.

The Circular Economy is driven by sustainable strategies of management and the reuse of materials and power to try to decrease the demand of resources and minimize the environmental impacts. Aligned to said perspective, the Industrial Symbiosis (IS) is opposite to the linear production's logic, enabling the sharing of resources, waste, and by-products, that is, the circular flow of power, water, materials, and information. In the last few years, to improve these IS strategies, platforms and tools were created to intermediate this process and facilitate the match between those who demand and offer waste and resources, such as the online waste markets or e-marketplaces. From this perspective, the objective of this study is to evaluate how these tools contributed to the IS process, going beyond the problem of the local factor. For this purpose, ten online platforms, found in the literature, were selected. The analysis was made based on the identification of key elements, which enabled the creation of a list with different types of traded materials, sectors and areas served, how wide was the service, the year when the activities started and, ultimately, the business model adopted. As a result, the evaluation shows that these tools enhance the symbiosis process because they approach the parties and facilitate the identification of synergies. Generally, the use of online platforms widens the geographic scope of the IS processes, enabling the interaction of parties from different places and regions. Was observed that these tools are characterized by the use of intelligent systems, based on algorithms that identify and recommend relations, providing greater assertiveness and speed to the decision-making process. Among the research's findings, we must stress that the IS potential extends much beyond the reuse of waste. There are opportunities for other synergies, such as infrastructure and service sharing. This paper presents a practical methodology for optimizing the geometry of electrical grounding grids at industrial frequencies of 50Hz and 60Hz, integrating advanced calculation techniques and evolutionary algorithms to improve the safety and operational performance of electrical grounding systems. The proposed approach is particularly beneficial for industrial automation and control systems, where effective grounding is necessary to maintain system reliability and prevent downtime. This methodology employs mathematical modeling and computational tools to optimize grid parameters, ensuring compliance with safety standards while reducing operational costs, thus contributing to the overall efficiency of automated systems in industrial environments. The study reports a reduction of up to 66% in the number of vertical rods and 40% in horizontal conductors compared to traditional methods. These results indicate that the proposed methodology can significantly reduce material usage and costs while maintaining electrical safety in accordance with regulatory standards, making it applicable to a wide range of industrial settings, including substations and automated facilities. © 2025 The Authors

Socio-biodiversity supply chain: Sustainable practices of a Brazilian cosmetic company

The purpose of this article is to analyze and describe sustainable practices based on biodiversity assets adopted by one of the largest global cosmetics company, located in Brazil. The company occupies the 19th position of the Global Ranking 100 Sustainability. The research method is bibliographic research that employed open, non-classified documents publicized by the company. The main findings of the study underscore the relevance of the rural communities in developing a supply chain based on biodiversity as well as the importance of the relationships among the tiers to implement a sustainable business model. The company relies on high-quality products associated with environmental development. Currently, biodiversity suppliers account for 80% circa of natural raw materials, the so-called biodiversity asset, which represents the core of the sustainable business model of the company. The findings can be generalized by helping other supply chains to develop and implement sustainable business models supported by biodiversity. Such type of a model can help companies achieve expressive business performance and, at the same time, social relevance to peripheral or vulnerable rural communities. © 2020 Wiley Periodicals LLC

Hoshin Kanri and A3: a proposal for integrating variability into the policy deployment process

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to propose a methodology to support the Hoshin Kanri (HK) process taking into account the variance of senior managers’ perspective regarding the relationships among objectives, key performance indicators and continuous improvement (CI) projects. Design/methodology/approach: A four-step methodology incorporates the A3 report into the HK, whose deployment was weighted by the variability among managers’ perception about the importance of each decision. This methodology was applied in a market-leader Mexican auto parts manufacturing company that is undergoing a Lean Manufacturing (LM) implementation. Findings: The results indicate that the proposed methodology provides an easier approach to consolidate different perspectives and weight the importance of CI projects. Moreover, it minimizes the possibility of managerial conflicts or the influence of a determined senior manager on others’ opinions during the deployment and prioritization. Practical implications: This work may be of great interest to managers, consultants and professionals who deal with the implementation of LM and wish to prioritize the importance of CI projects within the perspective of HK. Originality/value: HK provides a systematic approach to integrate strategic management with daily routine management through an adequate deployment of organizational policies to all levels. However, companies usually struggle with several issues such as the style of senior managers and consensus establishment among different opinions, which emphasizes the relevance of the proposed methodology in this study. © 2018, Emerald Publishing Limited.

The adoption of omni-channel strategy has changed the relation between retailers and customers and brought more complexity to the retailing supply chains. To address the increasing complexity, it is necessary to adopt innovative approaches based on information technologies and intelligent decision methods. The challenges to retailers are improving the accuracy of offline and online channels demand forecasting, better managing offline and online customer's needs, thus reducing the uncertainties of the omni-channel retailing supply chain. The world population is expected to increase to 9.8 billion by 2050, increasing food demand. Fertilizer is one of the key factors that can increase food production in the world. This article aims to investigate the flow of fertilizers among country origin, main ports of entry in Brazil, and international suppliers. For this purpose, data were collected from the Brazilian Ministry of Industry and Foreign Trade, and we analyzed these data using the Ucinet 6.0 ® and Netdraw ® software.
