The world population is expected to increase to 9.8 billion by 2050, increasing food demand. Fertilizer is one of the key factors that can increase food production in the world. This article aims to investigate the flow of fertilizers among country origin, main ports of entry in Brazil, and international suppliers. For this purpose, data were collected from the Brazilian Ministry of Industry and Foreign Trade, and we analyzed these data using the Ucinet 6.0 ® and Netdraw ® software. The results showed that imports of fertilizing products to Brazil are concentrated in Santos and Paranagua ports. © Interconnected Supply Chains in an Era of Innovation - Proceedings of the 8th International Conference on Information systems, Logistics and Supply Chain, ILS 2020. Electromobility (EM) has emerged as a promising solution to achieve carbon neutrality goals by replacing traditional fossil fuel-powered transportation with electric vehicles (EVs). This sustainable transportation option significantly reduces energy consumption and eliminates greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to mitigating climate change and improving air quality. While some countries have implemented strategies to promote EM adoption, emerging economies like Brazil face complex challenges. This research employs Q-methodology to explore the viewpoints and opinions of Brazilian specialists in the field of EM, identifying challenges and opportunities for successful adoption. The study also examines the broader implications for emerging countries and their automotive industries. The findings emphasize the importance of addressing EV costs, propulsion technologies, and the need for government incentives and policies. Additionally, the research highlights the role of education and urban mobility in promoting EM. While the study offers valuable insights, it acknowledges limitations in the sample and suggests future research directions. © 2024 The Authors

Cloud Platforms are heterogeneous, and users may face interoperability issues migrating applications or exchanging data among distinct clouds due, for instance, to the lack of standards solutions. Several solutions have been proposed to overcome lock-in situations, and middleware platforms are one of them. A semantic interoperability solution named middleware for Data as a Service (DaaS)/Database as a Service (DBaaS) and Software as a Service (SaaS)—MIDAS has been developed to overcome this lock-in issue. It is an intermediate communication layer to retrieve data from DaaS or DBaaS through a Structured Query Language (SQL) or a Not Only SQL (NoSQL) created at the SaaS level. MIDAS is a platform for software execution, but software development needs support for its entire life cycle. Therefore, we propose the Model drIven Approach for MIDAS (MIAMI), which enables the specification of platform-independent middleware models and their use to generate code on different cloud platforms. MIAMI comprises a Domain-Specific Modeling Language (DSML) that enables middleware models and a transformation specification, which defines how these models can be converted to code. MIAMI offers a strategy for MIDAS specification and code generation phases to help middleware developers’ activities. MIAMI was applied to code generation specifications in Cloud Foundry, Amazon Web Services, OpenShift, and Heroku providers to evaluate our approach. This specification shows MIAMI’s feasibility and points out that MDD is a promising approach to improving cloud interoperability solutions. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Photovoltaic generation is essential to face global energy challenges and promote a transition to a sustainable future. However, as technological transformations and economic progress occur, rivalry in the photovoltaic industry intensifies. Given the different competition scenarios observed throughout the photovoltaic value chain, a deeper analysis of inter-organizational relationships is necessary to develop market strategies to increase the number of decentralized photovoltaic systems. Therefore, this article explores the dynamics of inter-organizational relationships in the Brazilian photovoltaic value chain and how they can impact the development and competitiveness of the sector. Based on literature analysis and expert interviews, drivers and barriers to establishing collaborative and synergistic relationships to expand the photovoltaic market are discussed. The results highlight the complexity of inter-organizational relationships, which manifest themselves especially as strategic partnerships, technical relationships, and commercial relationships. Relationships emerge as crucial elements to guarantee the quality of products and services, operational efficiency, competitive deadlines, and fair prices. The barriers are fierce competition, dependence on imported inputs, lack of loyalty, and logistics network deficiencies. The findings showed that involvement and synergy between different stakeholders help develop dynamic capabilities and drive mechanisms to implement resources and relationships critical to creating value and competitive advantage. Additionally, the insights can guide the formulation of actions and strategies to promote the advancement of core technologies in emerging countries’ PV industry.

Every year, the production of rice straw and cow paunch content is abundant and 80 % of them has not been utilized. This study aimed to determine the potency of ensiling treatment on them in producing bioethanol. The novelty of this study is the utilization of cow paunch content as biomass and source of microbial fiber degradation. In this study, there were six groups of treatments. Bioethanol fermentation used Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Results, ensiling treatment significantly affected (p < 0.001) the changed chemical composition of them and produce ethanol of 40.13–102.84 mg/L. Conclude, ensiling treatment was considered effective ratio for bioethanol production. © 2024

Saturated hydraulic conductivity (KSat) is a key soil attribute that influences hydrological processes at multiple scales. It is well known that KSat is difficult to measure in the field. Field KSat measurement requires time and expensive equipment, skilled labor, and due to the variability of KSat, many samples are required. Artificial neural networks (ANNs) are powerful non-linear mathematical models that can estimate KSat from different soil and environmental input variables as well as using dimensionless variables generated using database resizing techniques via principal component analysis (PCA). Our main goal is to construct artificial neural network models for predicting KSat using soil and different land uses as input variables at a watershed scale. The study area is the Eller Creek watershed of about 0.7 km2 in southern Brazil, in which we established an experimental grid of 178 sampling points. Data of soil bulk density, total porosity, microporosity, macroporosity, soil organic carbon content, sand, silt and clay, and KSat were determined at each point in the 0-20 cm layer. A land-use map was derived from satellite images and used to identify the land use around each soil sampling point. PCA was applied to the original dataset and two selected PCs were included as input variables for ANN modeling. Our results suggest that PC inclusion as input parameters, collectively or individually, combined with the original data, increased the performance of the analyzed ANN models, when compared to similar models using only the original data and without PCs. The use of ANN models showed that the variation of KSat in the ECW watershed is not only associated with soil hydrological and environmental covariates, but also to PCs which are orthogonal linear recombinations that encapsulate the main sources of variation of the original datasets. © 2024, The Authors. Manufacturing systems’ efficiency depends on the proper assignment of orders to resources. Due to existing interdependencies, the integrated consideration of production, inventory and delivery processes can improve the overall manufacturing performance. However, the integration can result in high complexity and stochasticity. Thus, the three areas are rarely addressed together. Thereof, this paper proposes an integrated simulation-based optimization method to cope with uncertainty and complexity. The proposed approach was compared to a benchmark approach and the obtained results show that the first is able to handle the complexity and stochasticity of real-world manufacturing systems, surpassing the performance of the latter.

Renewable energy technologies integration within industrial districts can boost carbon emissions reduction in the industry sector. The eco-industrial parks model promotes the sustainable use of energy and the application of energy synergies and energy exchanges that can include renewable sources of energy. This paper presents an optimization methodology based on a multi-stakeholder perspective to evaluate energy symbiosis including the integration of renewable energy sources within the parks. The study results in three scenarios providing to managers of single firms and parks relevant information for supporting decision making regarding the economic sustainability and the environmental impacts of the energy synergies. The results show that the optimization of the collective point of view ensures more efficient management of the energy supplied by renewables as well as by firms that can provide an energy surplus.

There is a growing concern about food production, the rational use of energy, and the impacts caused by anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions on transport systems. With this concern in mind, the objective of this paper is to discuss the economic and environmental performance of different combinations of cargo vehicles. To do so, we explored the flow of soybean from Mato Grosso state to the ports. The results show that the combination of the stump semi-trailer presented the best economic performance, while the combination of the 'rodotrem' semi-trailer presented the best environmental performance. Industry 4.0 has drawn the attention of researchers around the world for its potential ability to increase competitiveness of the companies that can use it. Although much research has emphasized the technological aspect, little attention has been paid to the challenges and opportunities that the companies which intend to implement it expect to face. Based on secondary data this paper involved a research made with 135 companies in Ireland, 246 in Brazil and 305 in Argentina, to study the expected benefits and internal and external barriers that these 686 have in relation to the implementation of Industry 4.0. The practical implication and originality of this study is to present common points and some differences that these companies have, so researchers can guide their studies to try to overcome the main barriers, improving potential opportunities and helping to link research with practice more effectively. © 2019, Computers and Industrial engineering.
