The number of journals, and consequently the number of papers, has grown significantly, which makes it necessary to use suitable tools in systematic literature reviews. Several methodologies have been proposed for this purpose, and one of these methods is the index calculation used to rank the papers in order of importance. This study proposes a new index called the Normalized Index for Ranking Papers to rank the papers in a systematic literature review, which is considered mainly indicators provided by the Centre for Science and Technology Studies journal indicators. For this index calculation, importance weights are assigned by the researchers, and the indicators used in the index are normalized. For ranking the final portfolio, the proposed method considers a weighted average of indicators (impact factors) in which the paper was published and a value that represents approximately the number of citations per year. The journal self-citation index benefits the journals with lower self-citation practices. A Systematic Literature Review (SLR) was carried out to analyze the final portfolio's results involving Multi-criteria Decision Analysis in airports. The indicators normalization enables the importance of each metric to be decided by the researcher according to the choice of the weights, not by the difference in the indicators’ magnitude. The importance of an article can be proved initially by the journal indicators in which the paper was published and by citations per year. © 2024 The Authors

This paper presents the design and analysis of an extremum seeking (ES) controller for scalar static maps in the context of infinite-dimensional dynamics governed by the 1D Euler-Bernoulli (EB) beam Partial Differential Equation (PDE). The beam is actuated at one end (using position and moment actuators). The map’s input is the displacement at the beam’s uncontrolled end, which is subject to a sliding boundary condition. Notably, ES for this class of PDEs remains unexplored in the existing literature. To compensate for PDE actuation dynamics, we employ a boundary control law via a backstepping transformation and averaging-based estimates for the gradient and Hessian of the static map to be optimized. This compensation controller leverages a Schrödinger equation representation of the EB beam and adapts existing backstepping designs to stabilize the beam. Using the semigroup and averaging theory in infinite dimensions, we prove local exponential convergence to a small neighborhood of the unknown optimal point. Finally, simulations illustrate the effectiveness of the design in optimizing the unknown static map. Copyright © 2025, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Complexity measurement in two supply chains with different competitive priorities

Complexity measurement based on the Shannon information entropy is widely used to evaluate variety and uncertainty in supply chains. However, how to use a complexity measurement to support control actions is still an open issue. This article presents a method to calculate the relative complexity, i.e., the relationship between the current and the maximum possible complexity in a Supply Chain. The method relies on unexpected information requirements to mitigate uncertainty. The article studies two real-world Supply Chains of the footwear industry, one competing by cost and quality, the other by flexibility, dependability, and innovation. The second is twice as complex as the first, showing that competitive priorities influence the complexity of the system and that lower complexity does not ensure competitivity. © 2019, IFAC (International Federation of Automatic Control) Hosting by Elsevier Ltd. Saturated soil hydraulic conductivity (KSat) is a key soil attribute that affects hydrological processes in the soil surface layer. It is well known that KSat is difficult to be obtained in the field, requires time and expensive equipment, skilled labor and, due to its variability, requires many samples and can hardly be extrapolated. Artificial neural networks (ANNs) are powerful no-linear mathematical models to estimate KSat from different soil hydro-physical and environmental input variables as well as by using dimensionless variables generated by database resizing techniques from principal component analyses (PCA). The present study aimed to construct artificial neural network models for predicting KSat using soil attributes and different land uses as input variables at a watershed scale. The study was carried out in the Ellert Creek watershed of about 0.7 km2, Brazil, in which an experimental grid consisted of 178 sampling points was established. Data of soil bulk density, total porosity, microporosity, macroporosity, soil organic carbon content, sand, silt and clay, and KSat were determined at each point in the 0-20 cm layer. A land-use map was derived from satellite images and used to identify the land use around each soil sampling point. PCA was applied to the original data set and selected PCs were used as input variables for ANN modeling. Two PCs were selected and the results suggest that their inclusion as input parameters, both or individually, combined with the original data, increased the performance of the analyzed ANN models, when compared to similar models with only original data and without PCs. The use of ANN models showed that the variation of KSat in the ECW watershed is not only associated to soil hydrological and environment covariates, but also to PCs which are orthogonal linear recombinations that resume the main sources of variation of the original data sets. © 2023, The Authors. An efficient multi-objective evolutionary approach for solving the operation of multi-reservoir system scheduling in hydro-power plants

This paper tackles the short-term hydro-power unit commitment problem in a multi-reservoir system - a cascade-based operation scenario. For this, we propose a new mathematical modelling in which the goal is to maximize the total energy production of the hydro-power plant in a sub-daily operation, and, simultaneously, to maximize the total water content (volume) of reservoirs. For solving the problem, we discuss the Multi-objective Evolutionary Swarm Hybridization (MESH) algorithm, a recently proposed multiobjective swarm intelligence-based optimization method which has obtained very competitive results when compared to existing evolutionary algorithms in specific applications. The MESH approach has been applied to find the optimal water discharge and the power produced at the maximum reservoir volume for all possible combinations of turbines in a hydro-power plant. The performance of MESH has been compared with that of well-known evolutionary approaches such as NSGA-II, NSGA-III, SPEA2, and MOEA/D in a realistic problem considering data from a hydro-power energy system with two cascaded hydro-power plants in Brazil. Results indicate that MESH showed a superior performance than alternative multi-objective approaches in terms of efficiency and accuracy, providing a profit of $412,500 per month in a projection analysis carried out. © 2021, CC BY-NC-ND.

The chloroplast (cp) is an essential organelle in higher plants. The genes of the plastome are well suited to infer phylogenetic relationships among taxa. In this study, we report the assembly of the cp genome ofArtocarpus altilisand its phylogeny among species from Moraceae family. The cp genome ofA. altiliswas 160,822 base pair (bp) in length, comprising one large single-copy region of 88,692 bp, one small single-copy region of 19,290 bp, and a pair of inverted repeat regions (IRs) of 26,420 bp. A total of 113 different genes were predicted, including 79 protein-coding genes, 30tRNA genes, and fourrRNA genes. The phylogenetic analysis of 19 species belonging to the Moraceae family confirmed the phylogenetic proximity of the genusArtocarpusandMorusand the genetic similarity ofA. camansiandA. altilis.

Growing population, rapid urbanization, and increasing travel demand emphasize the need for reliable public transportation systems and sustainable transportation planning. A reliable bus service fosters a more significant, satisfied, and committed base of users. This research focuses on examining the association between on-time performance (OTP) and road network, demographic, socioeconomic, and land use characteristics to identify relevant external factors for proactive and reliable public transportation system planning. The analysis was conducted at a bus stop level. Bus arrival/departure data from the Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) was obtained. The road network, demographic, socioeconomic, and land use characteristics were captured within 0.25-mile and 0.50-mile buffers. Pearson correlation analysis was conducted to understand the association between OTP and road network, demographic, socioeconomic, and land use characteristics by day of the week and time of the day. The results show that OTP is associated with external factors such as the number of signalized or cul-de-sac/dead-end intersections, number of lanes, network density, population, income (median and total), and land use types related to residential and commercial/employment purposes within the bus stop vicinity. The findings provide vital insights for transit agencies to enhance scheduling, service and maximize benefits, effectively utilize available resources, plan, and provide equitable services to all riders. © 2023 The Author(s)

Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), Multi-criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA), and Cluster Analysis (CA) are techniques widely used to help decision-makers determine the solution to problems with multiple and often conflicting criteria. This study presents a comprehensive review of the literature on the DEA, MCDA, and CA models to identify existing and potential applications and future development trends. To this end, the Methodi Ordinatio was applied to determine which publications have the greatest impact, considering articles in three databases: Scopus, ScienceDirect, and Web of Science. We pair the techniques two by two since no results were found to integrate the three techniques. The results point to a portfolio with 490 articles, in which approximately 43.87% of the articles combine DEA and MCDA techniques for solving efficiency and productivity analysis problems. © 2023 The Author(s)

Refereeing in sports is about fairness. The referee's job is to balance what the player with the ball thinks is fair with what the player trying to take the ball thinks is fair. Referees are judges on those two opposite opinions. Football (soccer) has massive global appeal and fan interest. Some football championships now use Video Assistant Referees (VAR) to help the referees make correct decisions. This study reviews the literature on VAR in football using the Methodi Ordinatio. Methodi Ordinatio is a methodology used to select and rank relevant scientific papers combining the impact factor, number of citations, and year of publication. We present a case study about the distance the VAR officials cover in the main Brazilian football championship (Brazilian Serie A). This study adopts the p-medians method to analyse the impact of opening VAR operation rooms in the distance covered by the professionals travelling to officiate matches. The locations of VAR operation rooms were obtained, and applying these locations in the first ten rounds of the Brazilian Serie A season 2021 would possibly reduce about 70% of the distance covered by the VAR officials travelling compared to the total distance performed. © 2023 The Author(s)

International airports play a significant role in a country's economic development. We propose an integrated framework for operational efficiency analysis using Data Envelopment Analysis, Windows Analysis, and Malmquist Index to identify inefficiencies and areas of improvement in the air transportation industry. This study analyzed 23 Brazilian international airports from 2010 to 2021, using the DEA Window Analysis (DEAWA) combined with the Index (MI). The airports were grouped geographically in southern Brazil. The integration of these methods brought an important insight to the evaluation processes, even for those previously analyzed using DEA. The analyses found that COVID-19 potently influenced the drop in the efficiency index. No airport was fully efficient over the analyzed periods. Private airports achieved an efficiency index slightly higher than public ones, but the difference of the efficiency index by public–private management type is not clear. This type of analysis provides a strategic and comparative tool, making it possible to understand better the weaknesses of the air transportation system. © 2024 The Author(s)
