The Professional Choices of Black Adolescents in Brazil: Effects of Stereotype Threats

This article investigates the effect of stereotype threats (STs) on black adolescents’ choice for low- or high-status professions, through two controlled studies. Study 1 analyzed the perception of social status and racial compositions of different professions, enabling the creation of the variable used in the second study. Study 1 included 253 high school students from Aracaju, Brazil, 63% female, aged between 15 and 21 years (M = 17.30;SD = 0.975). The analysis revealed a perception of professional racial segregation, with white people seen as occupying high-status professions, while black people were seen as occupying low-status ones. Study 2 had a quasi-experimental design and investigated the effect of STs on the professional choices of black adolescents. It included 265 high school students, 64% female, aged between 15 and 24 years (M = 17.49;SD = 1.14), from the same city. The analyses found that black students under ST chose fewer high-status professions in comparison to black students in the no threat group. This allowed us to infer that in addition to performance, STs affect black people’s choices regarding their future professions. © 2022, Associação Brasileira de Psicologia.

Historically, services for families in the child welfare system have been behaviorally and externally focused, rather than attuning to what is happening on the inside for parents and children. Rarely do families have access to psychodynamic treatment provided by highly trained and well supported therapists. The Building Blocks program was developed at New Alternatives to Children, a child welfare agency, to provide mentalization-based psychodynamic treatment to families with children in foster care or at risk of being removed from the home. This paper presents data from a case of a mother and her infant daughter, observed through three lenses–clinical observation, research and supervision–sharpening our understanding of factors that facilitate trust, healing and attachment within both parent-child and therapeutic relationships. To empirically evaluate the Building Blocks program, families participate in assessments at baseline and after 12 sessions. We observed meaningful changes in this dyad’s verbal and nonverbal behaviors, based on Coding Interactive Behavior System, confirming the clinical observations. Finally, reflective supervision supported positive movement, and the use of video aided therapist mentalization. Integration of clinical training and research can provide a more comprehensive view of clinical work and allow families to be more fully seen and known. © 2021 JICAP Foundation, Inc.

Impact of repetitive negative thinking on reactivity and recovery from physiological stress in clinical and non-clinical individuals

Background The present study aimed to explore the association of repetitive negative thinking (RNT) and the physiological measure of heart rate variability (HRV). For this, we sought to understand whether the presence of induced stress by suggested negative thinking would change the HRV and to identify the differences in the HRV between the clinical (with and without RNT) and non-clinical (with and without RNT) groups. Method Sixty individuals participated (76.7% women, age M = 28.53;SD = 5.85). These were divided into two groups: control (n = 30), without self-reported diagnosis of mental disorder (80% women, age M = 28.26;SD = 4.80) and clinical (n = 30), with self-reported of mental disorder (73.30% women, age M = 28.80;SD = 6.82). Subsequently, the groups were subdivided according to the presence of RNT indicators. A stress induction was performed by evaluating the RNT scores using self-report instruments. The measurement of HRV occurred through an experimental protocol. Results The HRV was influenced by stress induction via suggested negative thought regardless of the presence of psychopathology. The presence of RNT did not change the reactivity to acute stress, but its recovery, showing a reduction in the HRV. Conclusions These results corroborate the perspective of stress expansion, indicating that individuals with RNT tend to cognitively persevere on the stressful event, prolonging the physiological response to stress and leading to allostatic load. It was concluded that the RNT is a potential vulnerability factor for the maintenance of physiological stress and, consequently, for psychopathology. © 2022

The aim of this study was to understand how digital technologies are being used to tackle dating violence among teenagers. A systematic review of national and international scientific literature was carried out in the Web of Science, PsycInfo, Pubmed, DOAJ, SciELO, Scopus, and Google Scholar databases, in November and December 2019. Eleven studies were eligible for inclusion in the systematic review;only one study had been carried out in Brazil, suggesting a gap in national scientific production on the subject. It was found that digital technologies have been successfully applied in the prevention of, and intervention in, situations of dating violence. There was a range of tools available for tackling this phenomenon among teenagers, including: smartphone apps, text messaging, digital games, and online multimedia. It is recommended that actions to tackle dating violence take account of the various expressions of violence — physical, psychological, sexual, and, more recently, digital — and their far-reaching repercussions for physical and mental health. © 2022, Associação Brasileira de Psicologia.

Objectives: The 12-item Self-Compassion Scale–Short Form (SCS–SF) is a widely used instrument for the assessment of self-compassion. To date, there have been few examinations of this instrument’s psychometric properties, particularly across nations and languages. Therefore, we used data from the Body Image in Nature Survey (BINS) to assess measurement invariance of the SCS–SF across nations, languages, gender identities, and age groups. Methods: Participants (N = 56,968) from 65 nations completed the SCS–SF in 40 languages. Using these data, we tested various hypothesised models of the SCS–SF in the total sample and, using multi-group confirmatory factor analysis, tested for invariance of the optimal model across national groups, languages, gender identities, and age groups. Results: In the total dataset, we found that an 11-item, 2-factor model (i.e., SCS-11) provided best fit to the data, with the two factors tapping distinct constructs of compassionate and uncompassionate self-responding. The SCS-11 was found to be partially scalar invariant across national groups and languages, and fully scalar invariant across gender identities and age groups. There was wide variation in latent means for the two factors, particularly across national groups and languages. Further analyses showed negligible associations between the two factors and sociodemographic variables, including marital status, financial security, and urbanicity. Conclusions: Our results suggest that it may be possible to derive a stable 2-factor model of the SCS–SF for use in cross-cultural research, but also highlight the likelihood of cross-national and cross-linguistic variations in the way that self-compassion is understood. © The Author(s) 2025.

We recently read the opinion piece titled“Why people should run after positive affective experiences instead of health benefits”,which was carried out by Maltagliati et al.^(1)and published in the Journal of Sport and Health *** article started an important discussion about a physical activity(PA)promotion approach that encourages the use of affective experience to PA *** we agree with the authors’point of view and believe that its message can generate an important insight for PA promotion,the authors presented a scenario where behavior change seems to be exclusively dependent on the *** the existence of other barriers to an active lifestyle(e.g.,social inequalities)could enhance the authors’suggested approach because many people live in conditions that reduce their opportunities to engage in affective experiences related to PA;furthermore,affective experiences can vary depending on individual context.

Reserpine-Induced Progressive Parkinsonism in Mice Predisposed and Non-Predisposed to Depressive-Like Behavior

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a progressive degenerative condition that mainly affects the elderly. The disease comprises motor symptoms such as tremors at rest, loss of voluntary movement, decreased muscle strength, propensity to lean forward and acceleration of the walking pace. These signs are related to the degeneration of the nigrostriatal dopaminergic pathway. Patients also have non-motor symptoms, among which sleep alterations, cognitive deficits, fatigue, pain and depression stand out. Although depression has been described as the most prevalent non-motor symptom, it is not clear whether this mood disorder is due to PD or patients would already have a greater predisposition. The present study evaluated the relationship between the predisposition to depressive-like behavior and the development of motor alterations in a progressive pharmacological model of PD in mice. Mice were classified into groups of depressive-like propensities and submitted to the pharmacological model. Reserpine was administrated at 0.1 mg/kg on alternate days for 40 days. The catalepsy and oral movement tests were used to evaluate motor alterations, the sucrose preference test was used to evaluate anhedonia, and the open field test was applied to evaluate general activity. Reserpine promoted parkinsonian motor impairments, and there were no differences between animals from different depressive-like behavior profiles. Thus, it was not possible to find a relationship between parkinsonism and the propensity to depression based on the basal sucrose preference test. More studies with other evaluations of depressive-like behavior are needed to confirm the results found in our study.

The Alcohol, Smoking and Substance Involvement Screening Test (ASSIST) is an instrument to screen substance-use-related health risks. However, little is known whether the ASSIST could be further shortened while remaining psychometrically sound across different countries, languages, gender identities, and sexual-orientation-based groups. The study aimed to validate a shortened 11-item ASSIST (ASSIST-11). Using the International Sex Survey data, 82,243 participants (M _age = 32.39 years) across 42 countries and 26 languages completed questions from the ASSIST-11 regarding gender identity, sexual orientation, and other information. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and multigroup CFA (MGCFA) evaluated the ASSIST-11's structure and tested measurement invariance across groups. Cronbach's α and McDonald's ω were used to examine the internal consistency. Cohen's d and independent t-tests were used to examine known-group validity. The ASSIST-11 was unidimensional across countries, languages, age groups, gender identities (i.e., men, women, and gender-diverse individuals), and sexual orientations (i.e., heterosexual and sexual minority individuals). Cronbach's α was 0.63 and McDonald's ω was 0.68 for the ASSIST-11. Known-group validity was supported by Cohen's d (range between 0.23 and 0.40) with significant differences (p-values<0.001). The ASSIST-11 is a modified instrument with a unidimensional factor structure across different languages, age groups, countries, gender identities, and sexual orientations. The low internal consistency of the ASSIST-11 might be acceptable as it assesses a broad concept (i.e., use of several different substances). Healthcare providers and researchers may use the ASSIST-11 to quickly assess substance-use information from general populations and evaluate the need to follow up with more detailed questions about substance use. © 2023 Elsevier Ltd

Objectives: This study aimed to examine the psychometric properties of the P4 suicide screener in a multinational sample. The primary goal was to evaluate the reliability and validity of the scale and investigate its convergent validity by analyzing its correlation with depression, anxiety, and substance use. Study design: The study design is a cross-sectional self-report study conducted across 42 countries. Methods: A cross-sectional, self-report study was conducted in 42 countries, with a total of 82,243 participants included in the final data set. Results: The study provides an overview of suicide ideation rates across 42 countries and confirms the structural validity of the P4 screener. The findings indicated that sexual and gender minority individuals exhibited higher rates of suicidal ideation. The P4 screener showed adequate reliability, convergence, and discriminant validity, and a cutoff score of 1 is recommended to identify individuals at risk of suicidal behavior. Conclusions: The study supports the reliability and validity of the P4 suicide screener across 42 diverse countries, highlighting the importance of using a cross-cultural suicide risk assessment to standardize the identification of high-risk individuals and tailoring culturally sensitive suicide prevention strategies. © 2024 The Royal Society for Public Health
