With the growth of the cities, the environment ended up being altered and, among others, the natural cover and native vegetation were replaced by a built environment, which contributed to deep environmental disturbances. One of them, climate change, has attracted attention in recent decades, and can no longer be ignored without greatly compromising the quality of life of human beings. From the scenario in which we are inserted, it became necessary to investigate which factors significantly influence climate change in urban centers. The Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro was the center of this study. From this scenario, the influence of green and wooded areas on urban thermal behavior was analyzed. In this sense, three types of soil surface exposure were studied experimentally during four periods of the year.

The aim of this paper was to report on factors contributing to the deterioration of the mental health of Indigenous populations(IP)in *** factors seem to have a direct impact on the mental health of IP in Brazil:(1)The absence of public policies;(2)Intellectual production;(3)Psychiatric medical care for remote areas(e.g.,telemedicine)aimed at promoting the mental health of Brazil’s IP,which causes a huge gap in the process of assistance and social,psychological,economic and cultural valorization of native peoples;(4)The dissemination of fake news,which exposed,above all,older IP to risk behaviors in the pandemic,such as refusal of vaccination;and(5)The violence carried out on IP lands due to economic interests with mining/agribusiness.

Nano-emulsions are alternatives for incorporation of essential oils in food-products. Despite generation of surfactant-free nano-emulsions is well known (e.g., Ouzo effect) its stabilization is a critical issue. This study shows the behavior of surfactant-free nano-emulsions prepared with two lemongrass essential oils based in dynamic light scattering analysis through exposure to a linear ramp of temperature. The gas-chromatography coupled to mass-spectrometry analysis revealed that β-myrcene was found in the Cymbopogon citratus and absent in C. flexuosus. C. citratus nano-emulsion prepared with deionized water (CCNE-DW) presented initial lower size diameter (208.6 ± 1.9 nm) than C. flexuosus nano-emulsion (245.2 ± 3.1 nm) prepared with deionized water (CFNE-DW), probably due to the presence of β-myrcene capable of avoiding a rapid droplet growth before onset of dynamic light scattering measurements. In silico physicochemical properties suggest that β-myrcene could considered decisive for low size of C. citratus nano-emulsions, since reduction of its concentration may induce destabilization of C. citratus diluted nano-emulsions. Similar initial droplet size was observed for C. citratus nano-emulsion (221.0 ± 1.3 nm) prepared with infusion (CCNE-IN) and C. flexuosus nano-emulsion (215.7 ± 1.7 nm) prepared with infusion (CFNE-IN). The highest droplet reduction was observed for CFNE-DW (DR_25–80ºC = 45.9 %;p<0.0001). Distinct phytochemical profile evidenced by ¹H NMR, since C. citratus infusion shows an envelope of signals with more overlapped peaks between the chemical shifts at δ_H 3.5 – 4.0 ppm, may favored solubilization of droplet components by the infusion and responsible by droplet growth of diluted nano-emulsions, in addition to decrease of β-myrcene content. Background: Aloysia gratissima (Verbenaceae), popularly known as bee-brush or whitebrush, has been widely used in Brazilian folk medicine as analgesic, expectorant and antimicrobial. Phytochemical studies have identified β-caryophyllene as one of the major components of the essential oil of this plant. This bioactive sesquiterpene has been shown to have anti-inflammatory and antibacterial activities. Purpose: The present study aimed to characterize the chemical profile and evaluate the antibacterial and antibiotic-enhancing activities of the essential oil obtained from Aloysia gratíssima (EOAG) and β-caryophyllene. Methods: The phytochemical analysis was performed by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The antibacterial activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa 24, Staphylococcus aureus 10, and Escherichia coli 06 was assessed by determining the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) using the broth microdilution method. The potentiation of the antibiotic activity by the EOAG and the β-caryophyllene was performed using the MIC evaluation of the antibiotic alone or in association with the essential oil and its main compound. To evaluate the minimum reduction of the drug concentration necessary, the Dose Reduction Index (DRI) was calculated. Results: A reduction in the MIC of the antibiotics against strains treated simultaneously with the essential oil or β-caryophyllene was observed. The GC-MS analysis of the EOAG identified 30 compounds, including β-caryophyllene as the major component. Both OEAG and β-caryophyllene presented antibacterial activity against S. aureus, in addition to potentiating the action of norfloxacin against S. aureus, P. aeruginosa, and E. coli. Conclusions: These substances also reversed the antibiotic resistance to gentamicin and erythromycin against of S. aureus and P. aeruginosa, respectively. © 2021 The Author(s)

This study evaluates the presence of bacterial and protozoan agents in ticks and fleas found on wild animals in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. These ectoparasites were collected on mammal species Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris, Tapirus terrestris, Dicotyles tajacu, Didelphis aurita, Cuniculus paca, Cerdocyon thous, and Coendou prehensilis, and on the terrestrial bird Dromaius novaehollandiae. Ticks and fleas were identified morphologically using specific taxonomic keys. A total of 396 ticks and 54 fleas were tested via polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for the presence of Rickettsia spp., Borrelia spp., microorganisms of the order Piroplasmida and Anaplasmataceae family. This total is distributed among nine tick species of the genus Amblyomma and one flea species. Rickettsia bellii was detected in Amblyomma dubitatum and Amblyomma pacae;Rickettsia sp. strain AL was found in Amblyomma longirostre;Rickettsia parkeri strain Atlantic rainforest was found in Amblyomma ovale;and “Candidatus Rickettsia senegalensis” and Rickettsia felis were detected in Ctenocephalides felis felis. Wolbachia sp. was detected in C. f. felis, and Borrelia sp. was detected in Amblyomma calcaratum (here named Borrelia sp. strain Acalc110). All tested samples were negative for Ehrlichia spp. and microorganisms of the Piroplasmida order. This study detected a new bacterial strain, Borrelia sp. strain Acalc 110 (which is genetically close to B. miyamotoi and B. venezuelensis) and the Rickettsia sp. strain 19P, which is 100% similar to “Ca. R. senegalensis”, a bacterium recently discovered and now being reported for the first time in Brazil. © 2022

Disasters are notoriously unpredictable;they can strike anytime, anywhere. However, in this Anthropocene Epoch, humanity has increased the likelihood of many disasters, as well as their likely severity and socio-ecological impacts, with implications for the future of natural resources;in particular, marine ecosystems and biodiversity, and the human communities who rely on them. This case study focussed on the Banggai cardinalfish (Pterapogon kauderni), a unique species of global conservation concern, and its native habitat in the Banggai Archipelago, at the centre of the Coral Triangle (CT) global marine biodiversity hotspot. To evaluate future risks and implications, we looked back to the past, including an overview of what is known regarding the origins and evolution of this species and its habitat, as well as past natural disasters in the Banggai Archipelago, Central Sulawesi, Indonesia. We then reviewed current status and trends affecting the likelihood of exposure and the vulnerability of endemic P. kauderni populations and habitat, overall and at the evolutionary significant unit (ESU) scale, to disasters caused by tectonic phenomena, disasters related to weather and anthropogenic climate change (e.g. mass coral bleaching, sea level rise), and the synergies between disaster impacts and localised human activities. Finally, we considered management options with potential for mitigating disaster risk and increasing resilience, with benefits for both biodiversity and human welfare, as well as avenues for future research. We conclude that local action can buy time, but it is likely that the eventual fate of this "flagship" species, as well as the human communities of this equatorial archipelago, depend on effective global action to curb the drivers of anthropogenic climate change. © 2019 Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Economic growth promoted by large investment projects in the city of Seropédica and surrounding areas is not accompanied by a territorial planning that supports future growth scenarios. The challenge of the municipality is to prepare to have its territory fully transformed. This study aimed to establish quantitative data on the interferences that the growth model practiced has caused in its main watercourse called Val?o dos Bois. For this, its morphometric characteristics and physicochemical parameters of water quality were measured, and computational simulations of the self-purification processes were performed at various points, as well as the infiltration and precipitation processes, surface flow and leaching in four occupation scenarios of the urbanized areas of the basin, for rains with five different return periods.

Ocotea odorifera is also known as sassafras and cinnamon sassafras. It was used as flavoring agent in beverages and other food industrial products, being now used in disinfectants and insecticides. The essential oil, of sassafras, as well as other Brazilian species, has great potential for the food industry, although it is occasionally affected by its volatile composition. New products, such as aqueous nano-emulsions, are considered extremely powerful since they enhance the properties of the oils. Therefore, the aim of this study was to develop this type of colloidal systems with O. odorifera essential oil. The best results were achieved with blends of polysorbate 20/sorbitan monooleate (size diameter <200 nm and polydispersity index <0.1) and no major alterations were observed after the storage. The critical interpretation of the molecular characteristics of the phytochemicals of this essential oil presents an interesting analysis about these essential oil-based nano-emulsions. For Aedes aegypti the estimated LC 50 and LC 90 values, are respectively, 37.646 and 46.3408 ppm; while for Culex quinquefasciatus the estimated LC 50 and LC 90 values are 33.3365 and 47.8939 ppm, respectively. The low energy/ecofriendly approach using different non-ionic surfactants by a non-heating method is in accordance with a sustainable concept. Therefore, it opens perspectives for the preparation of sassafras nano-emulsions.

The smart city debate will still be the scope of business, policy-making and territorial planning in the following years. Based on that, the paper aims to propose an interdisciplinary conceptualization of smart territories. The goal is to promote the contrary movement of megacities creation and also consolidate the geographical aspect of smartness. The concept was formulated based on the elements of sustainable territorial development, strategic spatial planning and smart governance. In addition, taking hand of a parallel literature review, the study explores the potential of creating complementary cryptocurrencies as a strategy of territorial planning. This term was built based on already existing complementary currency systems in distributed ledger technologies scope. The idea provided presents a great potential for poverty alleviation by bringing together financial and digital inclusion.
