Biogas and biohydrogen production using the main agricultural biomasses generated in Brazil: An integrative analysis to contribute to the implementation of energy decarbonization

The use of bioenergy feedstocks, agricultural and forest residues constitute a viable decarbonization design with regards to biofuel production. Nevertheless, aspects within agriculture that can be related to this process for instance, include: technology and infrastructure, policies, land use, environmental factors among others. Solving these challenges needs research, technological intervention, supportive policies and acclaimed association among agriculture and energy departments, especially considering that agricultural and forest residues are an abundant source of biomass which can be converted into renewable energy, for example, biogas and hydrogen. This study provides an assessment of the capacity for generating biogas and biohydrogen using the primary biomasses produced in Brazil's agricultural sector, specifically from rice, corn, soybeans, and wheat as alternative bioenergy resources. Data regarding production and waste creation were collected from the Statistical and Geographical Information of Brazilian Agriculture at the Institute of Geography and Statistics of Brazil and the Energy Research Company. Corn and Soybean straw showed the highest potentials for biohydrogen (PH) production, accounting to 6,67 E+09 m3/year and 5,56 E+09 m3/year respectively. The energy production using the generated biogas showed the most satisfactory results compared to biohydrogen, with the highest generation values of 222 TWh of energy for corn straw, 187 TWh for soybean straw. The total accumulated biogas and biohydrogen produced from the residual biomass of Brazil's four main permanent crops was approximately 8.25 E+10 and 1.33 E+10 m3/year, respectively. The generation of biogas and hydrogen holds significant potential for fostering a more sustainable energy future. Optimizing waste pre-collection model in Indonesian communities: comparing drop-off and door-to-door models through social cost–benefit analysis

Indonesia lacks an established waste pre-collection system resulting 90% waste ending up in open-dumping site. This study identifies a 35-m radius per drop-off points as the most optimal model. The City of South Tangerang, on 21 residential areas with a population of 63,157, being examine. Utilizing ArcGIS Pro and Python scripting, 12 scenarios were developed, model drop-off radii of 15–45 m and household limits of 4–32 per drop-off point, including combined models. Spatial clustering KD-Tree algorithm and Proximity-based Routing were employed to determine collection placements and walking distances. Heatmap and ANOVA tests evaluated conformity with residential characteristics. Model then organized into eight frequency schemes, utilizing motorcart and handcart systems with 4-day and 2-day pickup schedules for waste bank and in-house compost programs. This optimized model reduces collection time by up to 81% and costs by 50% compared to traditional door-to-door systems, achieving cost reductions of $30–$38 USD per ton and lowering CO₂ emissions. The discussion covers opportunity costs and occupational risk. Total Antioxidant Capacity of Meals Suggested in the Dietary Guidelines for the Brazilian Population

Chronic non-communicable diseases have modifiable risk factors, with dietary habits being a key component. A diet abundant in antioxidant-rich foods is inversely correlated with the onset and progression of these diseases. This study aimed to estimate the total antioxidant capacity (TAC) of meals suggested in the Dietary Guidelines for the Brazilian population (DGBP) (2014), as well as identify the main contributing foods. The research was quantitative and descriptive, based on the analysis of secondary data from photographic records of the suggested meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) in the DGBP. The foods, their preparation methods, and portion sizes were identified. The TAC of the foods was primarily estimated according to Carlsen et al. (2010), through the Ferric-Reducing Ability of Plasma (FRAP) assay. Subsequently, the TAC of the meals, the percentage contribution of each food item, and the TAC adjusted to 250 kcal were estimated. The average TAC found was 3.01 ± 1.35 mmol in breakfast suggestions, 1.93 ± 0.84 mmol in lunch suggestions, and 2.49 ± 3.34 mmol in dinner suggestions, with no significant differences when comparing the TAC results among the three meals (p=0.608). However, coffee was identified as the main contributor in breakfast suggestions, while beans stood out as the main contributor in lunch and dinner suggestions. Therefore, the foods that most prominently contributed to the TAC of the meals suggested by DGBP were those that, in addition to being part of the national food culture, are classified as in natura or minimally processed, highlighting their importance in providing bioactive compounds with health benefits. © 2025, The Authors. Decade-long performance of constructed wetlands in the dairy industry following an aerated facultative pond

Long-term data are essential for decision-making in the operation of constructed wetlands;however, such data are scarce. In the present study, a subsurface flow CW system was monitored over a 10-year period for the treatment of wastewater from the dairy industry. Prior to the CW, an aerated facultative lagoon was operated, and its data were also included in the study. The integration of both natural treatment systems (Lagoon + CW) revealed synergy in the combined removal of pollutants and nutrients. Up until the seventh year of operation, the integration of the systems removed more than 98% of COD, BOD5, and TSS, as well as 99.8%, 96.5%, and 71.3% of oils and greases, ammoniacal nitrogen, and total phosphorus, respectively. Surfactants, oils, and greases were entirely removed. The presence of significant clogging and surface flow from the seventh year onwards led to a reduction in treatment efficiency, indicating that this is the maximum recommended operating time for CWs following an aerated facultative lagoon in the dairy industry. After this period, all substrates should be replaced. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd

The Banda Sea, the largest and deepest ocean basin in the Indonesian Seas and a pivotal reservoir of the Indonesian Throughflow (ITF) exhibits significant seasonal variability in surface heat transport (SHT). This study investigates the influence of mesoscale eddies, sea surface wind (SSW), Ekman transport, and radiation as well as their complex interplay in shaping the SHT. The complex bathymetry of the region fosters a three-dimensional circulation pattern, facilitating the mixing of Pacific and Indian waters into the distinctive Indonesian sea. Mesoscale anticyclonic eddy (AE) and cyclonic eddy (CE) play crucial roles in regulating vertical heat distribution through upwelling and downwelling mechanisms. From 2006 to 2020, 236 AE and 193 CE events were identified, peaking in April and November (transition periods), respectively. During the northwest monsoon (NWM), SHT decreases due to weaker wind-driven currents and reduced advective export, which in turn leads to the accumulation of warm surface waters. While during the southeast monsoon (SEM), SHT increases as water is exported to the Indian Ocean. The ITF modulates the effects of CE and AE, with mesoscale eddy activity significantly influencing heat distribution during monsoon transitions and peak ITF periods. The June–August increase in eddies also enhances freshwater transport in the Ombai Strait and Timor Passage. Seasonal variations in radiation and wind patterns further impact SHT. During the NWM, higher radiation leads to positive SST anomalies and downwelling, intensifying evaporation. Conversely, lower radiation during the SEM results in lower SST anomalies. However, the ocean's energy content remains relatively high due to convergent net heat transport. During transitional periods, net heat transport approaches zero, and SSW are relatively lower, contributing to a decrease in evaporation. What are the levels of polyphenols in Brazilian meals? An estimate based on the degree of food processing (NOVA classification)

Considering the importance of polyphenol intake in reducing the risk of non-communicable chronic diseases, it is essential to encourage populations around the world, especially in Brazil, to consume foods that increase the presence of these compounds in their diet. This study aimed to identify the foods with the highest total polyphenol content and classes consumed by the Brazilian population, as well as their degree of processing. The study was conducted using secondary data collected from the 2017–2018 Household Budget Survey, which included the actual per capita food consumption of the Brazilian population and the usual portion size of foods. The investigation focused on 41 food items with the highest consumption frequency. Estimates of the total polyphenol (TP) content and classes in the foods were obtained from the Phenol-Explorer database, and the degree of food processing was classified according to the NOVA classification. Based on the ranking of the main foods consumed by Brazilians with the highest total polyphenol (TP) content, coffee (169.527 mg) and beans (38.422 mg) stood out for the average per capita consumption, while corn and its preparations (187.250 mg) and oranges (72.683 mg) stood out when analyzing the portion consumed in a single occasion. Regarding the polyphenol classes, the foods with the highest amounts consumed by Brazilians predominantly contained phenolic acids. Concerning the degree of processing, based on the NOVA classification, 76 % of the foods with the highest polyphenol levels belonged to the in natura and minimally processed food category, while 15 % corresponded to ultra-processed foods. It is essential to encourage the consumption of traditional foods in the Brazilian diet, as these are important sources of polyphenols. It is worth emphasizing the relevance of in natura and minimally processed foods as the basis of the Brazilian diet, mainly concerning the total polyphenol contents. © 2024 Elsevier B.V.

Contamination of aquatic and terrestrial organisms by Perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), emerging contaminants, is widespread, as these compounds are present in water, soil, air, and food, owing to their environmental persistence. PFAS exposure induces biochemical process alterations associated with the disruption of the antioxidant defense system in several species. This review aims to discuss how PFAS-induced antioxidant system alterations lead to changes in biochemical processes in different organisms exposed to these pollutants. This disruption, then leads to an imbalance in antioxidant defense systems, contributing to the formation of reactive oxidative species (ROS), which, in turn, can be exacerbate oxidative stress, induce cellular damage, enhance lipid peroxidation, destabilize lysosomal membranes, and cause genotoxic effects, ultimately compromising DNA integrity. In acute tests, PFAS have led to mortality, growth inhibition, diminished behavioral and locomotor abilities, and reproductive impairment. PFAS-induced effects differ with varying species or types of substances, and further bioaccumulation through food chains exacerbates environmental contamination, carrying considerable risks. These findings demonstrate the complex and enduring impact of PFAS on environmental health, emphasizing the importance of this review in corroborating studies on sub-lethal toxicity in exposed organisms and how these effects reflect on the environment. © 2025 Elsevier B.V.

The growing environmental concerns over the use of synthetic polymers have encouraged the search for biodegradable alternatives in food packaging. Among natural sources, the Cactaceae family has emerged as a promising candidate due to its abundance, sustainability, and versatile functional properties. Mucilage extracted from Opuntia cladodes and pectin obtained from Pitaya peels exhibit valuable characteristics, including antioxidant and antimicrobial activities. Furthermore, cactus fruit provides a rich source of bioactive pigments and nutrients, further enhancing the functionality of the resulting packaging materials. While the mechanical properties of current cactus-based films require further improvement through polymer blending and cross-linking techniques, their potential for extending shelf life and enabling intelligent packaging solutions is evident. This review aims to underscore the techno-functional attributes of Cactaceae species, focusing on their potential for developing biodegradable films and coatings through an in-depth literature review and bibliometric analysis. © 2025 Elsevier B.V.
