The recent detection of a very high energy (VHE) emission from Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) above 100 GeV performed by the MAGIC and H.E.S.S. collaborations, has represented a significant, long-awaited result for the VHE astrophysics community. Although these results' scientific impact has not yet been fully exploited, the possibility to detect VHE gamma-ray signals from GRBs has always been considered crucial for clarifying the poorly known physics of these objects. Furthermore, the discovery of high-energy neutrinos and gravitational waves associated with astrophysical sources have definitively opened the era of multi-messenger astrophysics, providing unique insights into the physics of extreme cosmic accelerators. In the near future, the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) will play a major role in these observations. Within this framework, the Large Size Telescopes (LSTs) will be the instruments best suited to significantly impact on short time-scale transients follow-up thanks to their fast slewing and large effective area. The observations of the early emission phase of a wide range of transient events with good sensitivity below 100 GeV will allow us to open new opportunities for time-domain astrophysics in an energy range not affected by selective absorption processes typical of other wavelengths. In this contribution, we will report about the observational program and first transients follow-up observations performed by the LST-1 telescope currently in its commissioning phase on La Palma, Canary Islands, the CTA northern hemisphere site. © Copyright owned by the author(s) under the terms of the Creative Commons.

The Large-Sized Telescopes (LSTs) of Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) are designed for gamma-ray studies focusing on low energy threshold, high flux sensitivity, rapid telescope repositioning speed and a large field of view. Once the CTA array is complete, the LSTs will be dominating the CTA performance between 20 GeV and 150 GeV. During most of the CTA Observatory construction phase, however, the LSTs will be dominating the array performance until several TeVs. In this presentation we will report on the status of the LST-1 telescope inaugurated in La Palma, Canary islands, Spain in 2018. With the progression of civilization, the harmony within nature has been disrupted, giving rise to various ecocidal activities that are evident in every spheres of the earth. These activities have had a profound and far-reaching impact on global health. One significant example of this is the presence of fluoride in groundwater exceeding acceptable limits, resulting in the widespread occurrence of “Fluorosis” worldwide. It is imperative to mitigate the concentration of fluoride in drinking water to meet safety standards. While various defluoridation techniques exist, they often have drawbacks. Biosorption, being a simple, affordable and eco-friendly method, has gained preference for defluoridation. However, its limited commercialization underscores the pressing need for further research in this domain. This comprehensive review article offers a thorough examination of the defluoridation potential of agro-based adsorbents, encompassing their specific chemical compositions and preparation methods. The review presents an in-depth discussion of the factors influencing fluoride biosorption and conducts a detailed exploration of adsorption isotherm and adsorption kinetic models to gain a comprehensive understanding of the nature of the adsorption process. Furthermore, it evaluates the commercial viability through an assessment of regeneration potential and a cost analysis of these agro-adsorbents, with the aim of facilitating the scalability of the defluoridation process. The elucidation of the adsorption mechanism and recommendations for overcoming challenges in large-scale implementation offer a comprehensive outlook on this eco-friendly and sustainable approach to fluoride removal. In summary, this review article equips readers with a lucid understanding of agro-adsorbents, elucidates their ideal conditions for improved performance, offers a more profound insight into the fluoride biosorption mechanism, and introduces the concept of effective spent adsorbent management.

Phthalate ester (PAE) contamination, particularly from dibutyl phthalate (DBP) and di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP), originating from landfills and released into the environment, poses a significant concern. Understanding PAE biodegradation is crucial for developing bioremediation strategies. This study used cover material from a 1-month-old landfill for soil microcosms. Indigenous microbes effectively removed 300 mg kg of DBP and DEHP as individual and mixed substrates, achieving complete DBP removal and 70% DEHP removal at room temperature (27-30 °C) and 37 °C. Actinobacteria were dominant, indicating potential active PAE-degraders. Shotgun metagenomic analysis revealed an increased abundance of potential PAE catabolic genes, such as those encoding esterase, lipase, and dioxygenase, under all conditions, mainly associated with Streptomyces, Saccharopolyspora, Nocardia, Nocardioides, and Amycolatopsis. The genes associated with Saccharopolyspora were abundant at 37 °C, while those related to Nocardia and Actinomadura were prevalent at room temperature, suggesting temperature preferences. The genera Saccharopolyspora and Actinomadura have not been linked to PAE degradation, indicating potential novel PAE degraders. Furthermore, PAE-degrading bacteria were isolated using media designed from metagenomic data and were categorized into Streptomyces, Amycolatopsis, and Nocardia. This work highlights the roles of rare taxa and provides insights into potential novel PAE degraders, emphasizing the need for further research into these organisms.

AstroPix is a novel monolithic high-voltage CMOS active pixel sensor proposed for next generation medium-energy gamma-ray observatories like the All-sky Medium Energy Gamma-ray Observatory eXplorer (AMEGO-X). For AMEGO-X AstroPix must maintain a power consumption of less than 1.5 mW/cm2 while having a pixel pitch of up to 500 µm. We developed the second and third versions of AstroPix, namely AstroPix2 and AstroPix3. AstroPix2 and AstroPix3 exhibit power consumptions of 3.4 mW/cm2 and 4.1 mW/cm2, respectively. While AstroPix2 has a pixel pitch of 250 µm, AstroPix3 achieves the desired size for AMEGO-X with a pixel pitch of 500 µm. Performance evaluation of a single pixel in an AstroPix2 chip revealed a dynamic range from 13.9 keV to 59.5 keV, with the energy resolution meeting the AMEGO-X target value (60Co source. The area of the rice harvest in Banten Province in 2021 was 319,558 ha with a production of 1,63 million tons of unhusked rice or with a productivity of 5.1 tons/ha (CBS,2022). The objectives of this study were: 1) to optimize the target of rice and corn production in Banten Province, and 2) to optimize the target farmers' income in Banten Province. The study method used was a survey, with purposive sampling at the farmer level. Data were analyzed qualitatively (uses descriptive tabulation) and quantitatively (uses goal programming). The results of this study were:1) The target of rice production in the Banten Province of 2.1 million tons of unhusked rice can be achieved with the optimal area of irrigated paddy of 299,755.7 ha and the optimal area of field/dry land of 87,750.9 ha. The target for maize production of 1.75 million tonnes in Banten Province can be achieved with an optimal planting area of 342.211.7 ha of dry land. 2) The optimal area of food crops to achieve the farmer's income target in Banten Province in 2018 is IDR. 8.79 trillion comes from the planting area of lowland rice covering an area of 391,222.1 ha, the corn planting area of 169,059.9 ha, soybean planting area of 23,074.82 ha and cassava planting area of 2,832.77 ha. © 2023, The Authors. The cement industry has been the cornerstone of economic development since the Industrial Revolution. However, the calcination process used to produce cement raw materials releases various pollutants, such as carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and sulfur oxides, which are key contributors to global warming. Therefore, innovative technologies are urgently needed to minimize the environmental impact of the cement industry. In recent years, microalgae have gained attention because of their advantages in recovering resources and reducing the impacts of industrial pollutants. The use of microalgae to address the environmental challenges associated with cement production remains largely overlooked in current reviews. This review summarizes the recent advances in the utilization of microalgae to address the environmental challenges posed by the cement industry. Microalgae offer two main pathways for environmental mitigation: the (i) production of bio-cement as an eco-friendly alternative for construction and (ii) conversion of cement flue gases into biomass feedstock with high-value downstream applications. We also identify existing challenges and propose an integrative “Microalgae–Bacteria Consortium” system as a sustainable strategy for the significant reduction of the environmental footprint of cement production. This approach has the potential to transform the cement industry into a more sustainable and eco-friendlier sector. Overall, microalgae provide an innovative and sustainable platform to revolutionize the cement industry into a greener sector, supporting the global shift toward a low-carbon, circular economy.

Educating more students about ecology and its beneficial applications to societal issues is urgent yet challenging. To address this challenge, diversifying ecology education is a key way to make ecology more inclusive, accessible, and interdisciplinary for more people than ever. Advancing this goal requires ecology educators to develop a more expansive view of (1) how to engage more diverse undergraduate students in ecology courses, especially those from historically underrepresented groups and non-majors, (2) the interdisciplinarity of content in those courses, and (3) the learner-centered pedagogies used to engage students. We suggest ways that ecologists can advance “ecology education for everyone” including focusing on connecting ecology to students' everyday lives and local (urbanized) places; applying ecology to solving problems in social–ecological systems; introducing students to the diversity of worldviews about science and nature; and adopting authentic teaching practices such as course-based undergraduate research, service learning, and reflective practices. Through such efforts, ecology education can become more positivistic and pluralistic and help students better appreciate the value of ecology for society and use their ecological literacy to engage in improving local communities and ecosystems. Successful diversification of ecology education should also benefit the discipline of ecology as more diverse students decide to take more ecology courses, potentially pursue ecology-related careers, and support ecologically based decision-making for a more sustainable and environmentally just future for all people.

Pulmonary Disease Pattern Recognition on X-Ray Radiography Image Using Artificial Neural Network (ANN) Method

This research aims to recognize the pattern of pulmonary disease on x-ray radiography image using artificial neural network (ANN) method. The images, which were used such as images of healthy pulmonary, pulmonary tuberculosis, and pulmonary tumour. Pattern recognition was using an extraction feature of GLCM (Gray Level Co-occurrence Matrix) and back propagation method. Before being identified, the images were processed by median filter and adaptive histogram equalization. The GLCM features that used were homogeneity, energy, contrast, variance and correlation. The parameters were learning rate and hidden layer. Learning rate was 0.3 and hidden layer was 25. Back propagation training showed 100% accuracy, which all of 44 images were used had been successfully identified. From the result, the healthy pulmonary showed 60% accuracy, 83.3% for pulmonary tuberculosis and 100% for pulmonary tumor. Hence, the overall result showed 81.25% accuracy, which 13 of 16 images had been successfully identified. From these result, extraction feature of GLCM using back propagation method was capable to recognize the pattern of pulmonary disease. However, due to narrow range of the feature, this application may not be used optimally for comparing features in every category of images. Therefore, the further research is needed to determine the best features and parameters of training back propagation.

This study investigates the correlation between body mass index (BMI) and osteoporosis utilizing data from the Taiwan Biobank. Initially, a comprehensive analysis of 119,009 participants enrolled from 2008 to 2019 was conducted to assess the association between BMI and osteoporosis prevalence. Subsequently, a longitudinal cohort of 24,507 participants, initially free from osteoporosis, underwent regular follow-ups every 2–4 years to analyze the risk of osteoporosis development, which was a subset of the main cohort. Participants were categorized into four BMI groups: underweight (BMI < 18.5 kg/m²), normal weight (18.5 kg/m² ≤ BMI < 24 kg/m²), overweight (24 kg/m² ≤ BMI < 27 kg/m²), and obese groups (BMI ≥ 27 kg/m²). A T-score ≤ − 2.5 standard deviations below that of a young adult was defined as osteoporosis. Overall, 556 (14.1%), 5332 (9.1%), 2600 (8.1%) and 1620 (6.7%) of the participants in the underweight, normal weight, overweight and obese groups, respectively, had osteoporosis. A higher prevalence of osteoporosis was noted in the underweight group compared with the normal weight group (odds ratio [OR], 2.20;95% confidence interval [95% CI], 1.99 to 2.43;p value < 0.001) in multivariable binary logistic regression analysis. Furthermore, in the longitudinal cohort during a mean follow-up of 47 months, incident osteoporosis was found in 61 (9%), 881 (7.2%), 401 (5.8%) and 213 (4.6%) participants in the underweight, normal weight, overweight and obese groups, respectively. Multivariable Cox proportional hazards analysis revealed that the risk of incident osteoporosis was higher in the underweight group than in the normal weight group (hazard ratio [HR], 1.63;95% CI 1.26 to 2.12;p value < 0.001). Our results suggest that BMI is associated with both the prevalence and the incidence of osteoporosis. In addition, underweight is an independent risk factor for developing osteoporosis.
